Scrappy Pillow

The new Blogger format has been foisted on me. I know the change is inevitable, so I'm trying to get used to it. I don't like it, nor do I see any advantage over the old Blogger. But I will get used to it.

The above pillow is another of my "use it up" projects - more leftover four-patch squares alternating with striped fabric from an old shirt. The buttons came from my button box and the white border fabric from my stash.  It's good to see something finished, but at the same time, I could sew constantly for a year without running out of fabric.

This project is part of Stumbles and Stitches "Feather Your Nest" project to (1) make something for your own home, and (2) recycle, use up supplies. I have plans for more projects, but am unlikely to finish them before the end of the month.

Have you read Annie Dillard's books? I love An American Childhood, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, and The Writing Life. I did not know that she wrote fiction until this morning. While shelving books in the library I ran across The Maytrees, set it aside and started reading it during my break. So far, it's intriguing.

  1. One of the best things about reading the blogs of sensitive people is the books that are mentioned. So thanks, I've just downloaded An American Childhood on my Kindle.

I haven't run across a new format for our blogs. Am I missing something?

  2. What a pretty pillow! I wish I could sew. I haven't tried the new format yet and now I'm not looking forward to it. Why do they change things that don't need fixing?
    Take care:)

  3. Given your comment, I gather your fabric stash is just a wee bit extensive! Have fun with your projects.

  4. Very pretty!
I'm curious to know why you felt you had to change blog format -- I fiddled with one of the new templates a while ago, but I didn't feel ready to give up some of what I'd have to, although I did like the longer lines of the main text, and I liked the cleaner look, as you have it here.

  5. Why things have to be changed when there's no apparent advantage, I don't know. I haven't posted into the new format yet. I'll see how it goes.

The cushion is lovely. Have we ever seen your fabric stash? I think we should. :)

  6. What a pretty pillow.
For a little while you have the option to go back to the old Blogger interface. Click on 'Options'.

  7. It's such a good feeling to use up scraps or "upcycle" and your pillow is so pretty! And it has a story to go with it, which makes it all the more special.

  8. A.D. Sounds like a fascinating person just from reading at the web site. Hmmm... No, I'm not familiar with her work. I'll have to do some more research.

Love that pillow...what an inspired idea. I thought that the pink stripes were mattress ticking. I have some blue stripe from an old shirt that would work well in this sort of context, but who am I kiddding? I have miles to go before I can start working and creating again in my sewing room. It is literally filled (crammed) to the rafters and I can barely gain entrance. I don't know when I'll be back to blogging at this rate.

  9. I am determined to get through my stash as well. Love the little pillow. I switched to the newer format back when they first introduced it and thought I would never adjust but I have, can`t even remember what it was like before.

  11. Your pillow is so lovely. As for the new blogger format it's not so lovely but we'll all get used to it. Do I see sunshine in our weekend's forecast?

  12. Lorrie - your pillow is great and I like the look of the flowers and ticking combined. The addition of buttons gives just the right touch. Happy Sewing!

  13. When I see a project such as this one I think that there might be hope for my burgeoning stash of fabric!
I love to learn of a new book - and like the thought that you found this one while shelving books in the school library - really a lovely bit of serendipity.

  15. Love your pillow. The colors are so pretty and look like a breath of spring.
I am not familiar with this author, but I've made a note to look for her books at our library.

  16. My husband is loves Annie Dillard, especially Pilgrim at Tinker Creek and Teaching a Stone to Talk. I have one of her fiction books, The Living, set in the northwest, but it started out so depressing I haven't made myself finish it yet. Let us know how you like The Maytrees.

  17. Hello Lorrie,

Well, technology changes constantly and unfortunately we have to adapt to it, don't we?
The good thing is that Blogger is still a free platform and by the way your blog looks very nice.

    Love this pillow!

    Happy weekend!
