Cold Weather Cooking

The kitchen filled with good smells this weekend. Tim's supply of granola was replenished, bread baked, a chicken roasted, followed by the carcass made into stock. Chilly temperatures had me yearning for warming soup.

Roasted butternut squash is one of my favourite vegetables, and it's even better when made into soup. Fresh ginger added warmth, and a pale yellow, fragrant ripe pear added a hint of sweetness. It was an inspired contribution. I wrote out the recipe which you can find here, on my recipe blog.

Today is slightly warmer, but overcast, which paradoxically feels colder. What's your favourite warming food?

  1. I love soup all year long no matter the weather. I am almost finished with the granola I made a couple of weeks ago so will be making more of it very soon. Hope you have a great week. Tammy

  2. Oh, I love soup! So will check this one out! I've been catching up on your posts. The little granddaughters are so cute and I know first hand what joy they bring! The ocean shots are so appreciated too. If I lived in that white house you pointed out all I would do would be to look out the window too! I hope you have more sunshine!!

  3. THis is indeed the sort of weather that you need a bowl of soup. I made a pan full too.

  4. Funny as I am making soup for supper as well. When I can figure out how to pin from my iPad, I am planning to pin that recipe. It sounds so delicious...perhaps it is the addition of the pear.

  8. I want that! I'm on my own this week, and this soup will suit my evening meals perfectly. Now if only that butternut squash weren't so difficult to cube. . .

  10. Those sound like the perfect winter activities to me...cooking soup and making granola. I love soup...so I would have to vote for that as my favorite warming-up food.

  11. That soup is a glorious colour. Two of my favourite warming foods would be a plate of stew or, even more simply, a mug of hot apple cider.

Oh, to sit in your kitchen! What a delight that would be!
I guess my fav winter meal is pork chops with au gratin potatoes. Yum. :)
    Have a happy Tues.

  15. Hm, an excellent idea. Now all we need is the cold to go with the soup.

  16. No cold weather here but every bit of that weekend cooking sounds good and are things we'd eat here even when it is warm. Although I might use a rotisserie store-bought chicken instead of having the oven on for a long time. I'm definitely checking out the squash soup recipe though.
