Doors and Windows

Donna, who hosts the monthly Personal Photo Challenge, suggested doors and windows as this month's theme. I took these photos at a national park, Fort Rodd Hill, with its gun batteries and lighthouse. The photo above is of a small equipment locker up on the hill beside the range-finder.

A view from the lighthouse over the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mountains of Washington State beyond. I was a little miffed to see the edge of the stroller (yellow) in the photo. Not very good composition.

Catches today are often prosaic and boring. I love the graceful lines of this window catch in the lighthouse.

This door and handle has patina from years of use and weathering. I believe it was taken at the munitions storage room.

Lastly, windows in the Lighthouse. I like the symmetry of the pair of matching windows and the contrast with the tiny arched window in the lighthouse itself.

The photos were taken with my Nikon Coolpix 7100 on the outdoor scene setting. It was a bright day and I compensated for that by going down a couple of notches on the exposure compensation dial.

  1. Love Fort Rodd Hill Park. Still want to get there on a sunny day . . . last time was cold and raining and we didn't see the whole thing. Your pictures are calling to me . . . come back!

  2. Wow...I certainly don't remember it being that photogenic, you have taken some amazing shots. Makes me almost want to go back again, and replace those younger year memories with better ones. Maybe one day.

Muddy Boot Dreams has moved to a new spot, www.muddybootdreams.com if you would like to update your links that would be great.

  3. Fabulouse pictures and great composition. I am constantly amazed at what a good view you have of our Olympics - we have to get much closer to see them - too many other mountains in our way I guess. Sometimes we get a clear day and can see them from I-5 near Burlington, but not often. I enjoyed the tour. Thanks

  4. Fort Rodd is a great place for a weekend ramble - sunny day or cloudy day. The views are incomparable. I enjoyed your shots.

  5. Nothing prosaic or boring about this post...I very much enjoyed seeing all the pictures...would never have noticed the stroller's edge...too busy looking at the mountains in the distance. A very scenic and historic place to visit.

  9. I didn't notice the stroller until you pointed it out, such a nice view out the window to focus on. The window catch is nice, wish the ones in our home were ornate like it.

  10. Love the lighthouse. I've always thought it would be neat to live in one. The catch pic is really good to. I didn't notice the stroller either until I read it was there.

  11. Thanks for the eye candy. Do you often enlarge and frame your photos? They're so lovely!

  12. How funny you mentioned the stroller. I had to look for it after reading your comment!!! Your photo are beautiful and I loved the patina of the handle. Sometimes when I visit old places with handrails, as I walk the stairs I try to imagine the hands that have been there before mine. In NY there is a wonderful museum, the Tenement Museum and the interiors of the apartments have not been changed. There it was almost haunting to touch a rail or handle and imagine the people who'd passed there before me.

  13. What an amazing view! I'm so glad I got to see the photo because I'm pretty sure I will never climb up into a lighthouse! I know....never say never! But how amazing! Wonderful photos my friend!

  15. Oh Lorrie, these are lovely photos, each one! I am swooning over the door handle and window catch...and am intrigued by the little door in the side of the hill.

I am smiling at the comment of Lavender Dreamer because I, too, doubt that I shall ever see the view from the top of a lighthouse! I am the one who holds the purses and jackets while the others in my group ascend the stairs.

Thank you for the visual treat!

  16. Really lovely...I love the patina on old things. I agree that they used to be more decorative even for everyday use.

  20. Wonderful images! I always love a light house and it has a variety of windows. Love the door handles. etc. And of course looking out from the light house!

  21. What terrific contributions! The lighthouse stole my heart, no question about it. Look at that brilliant blue sky, wispy clouds, and red/white colors of the building! And I am so glad that you included some hardware photos too. They are works of art and frequently overlooked. (But I always check them out and photograph them too.) I think you met this challenge head on and conquered it.

  22. Doors and windows can be so beautiful. It's a bit of a shame that so many of them in our own country seem to focus on being solely utilitarian.

  23. A great selection of photos Lorrie.
I love the catches and the peeling paint.
The lighthouse photo is wonderful - did you see inside?
I've just done my doors and windows post - running late today!

  26. All beautiful images Lorrie but have to say that last one - cobalt and terra cotta how can one go wrong - is my favorite. The angle is perfect - I love light houses - and the sky beautiful with some wispy clouds passing by.
The French blue on the locker doors is of course a favorite shade for me - I could really find somewhere to display those!!

    Happy week - Mary
