Vee's Note Card Party - September

It's time for Vee's Note Card Party - held once a month. Lots of great photos there and lovely people to visit with.

This month I'm featuring dahlias. They are such great flowers to have in a garden because they bloom and bloom - for several months - dying off only with the first frost. Hopefully that's a month or more away for us.

When we moved into this house 11 years ago, Pat and Wendy lived across the back fence. That first day, they handed over a plate of lemon bars, which led to many more conversations. And they grew dahlias. Rows and rows of them. They supplied several florists in town, and often handed bouquets of them over the fence. It was because of them that I because interested in growing dahlias.

During the two years we lived up Island, Pat and Wendy moved away because of Pat's health. He later passed away. I don't know where Wendy is living now, but I never look at a dahlia without thinking of them and their kindness.

The photo above is the only one previously posted on my blog, and sadly, it's the one dahlia that I lost last winter. I'm going to look for a replacement because I love the watercolor effect on the petals plus that gorgeous deep color.

Thanks once again to Vee for hosting this linky party.

  5. I love dahlias too. They are considered old-fashioned and a fussy person’s plant here. As I completely disregard fashion everywhere else, why not in my garden too.

Gorgeous blooms, your dahlias; I hope you find the one you lost.

  6. Though I've grown dahlias, they have never looked like these. I am particularly fond of the third one with the combination of yellow and pinks. Beautiful! I hope that you learn where Wendy might be. Seems as if you had some very special neighbors. I like the borders that you gave your photographs. It really sets them off and makes them look so handsome. Gotta love crisp, clear photography!

  20. I love dahilias! My grandma Minnie grew them. One year for my October birthday she made me a beautiful dahilia corsage to wear for the party. A big black spider crawled out while I was wearing the corsage! I still love dahilias!

    Smiles,

  22. They are such beautiful blooms Lorrie - always looks so clean. We grew them when I was a child - some were gigantic and had to be staked when the heads were so heavy.
I hope some day you are able to each your long lost friend.

Lovely cards all - that second one, the pure pink bloom, is so pretty.
    Hugs - Mary

  24. I think dahlias are the stars in our autumn gardens taking over from the faded glory of the summer perennials.
Big and blowsy - wonderful for picking and photography.
I love this set of cards - perfect!
(funny as I almost used my dahlias today too)! Great minds and all that!

What a lovely memory of your kind neighbours.

  26. When you speak of losing them in the winter, I wonder if you lift them or not. I've never bothered with dahlias because they seem too much work (well, I had some from my dad at one point, but because I never lifted, they eventually disappeared. . . )

  27. These are gorgeous! I'd love to know of good mail order sources for dahlia bulbs, if you can recommend some. I had every intention of planting some this year and I never got around to it. Of course, I would use them for photo subjects!

  32. Oh, how beautiful!! I've never grown dahlias - you say they are easy? I'd like to give them a try and your photos just about make my mouth water! Great color and focus. I especially like the closeups. By the way, I remember a TV move many, many years ago about the "Black Dahlia." Anyone ever heard of it?
