Five on Friday

1.  Purple coneflowers at the garden I visited earlier in the week. I have some growing in my own garden, a recent addition since I realized that most of my flowers bloom earlier in the summer and I want colour all season long. The petals look as though they've been painted with watercolours.

2.  My husband has been away since Sunday. Baltimore, Buffalo, Toronto. I thought I'd have all kinds of time to accomplish some projects, but I've mostly been keeping up with the garden. Green beans ready for the freezer. I use them mostly in soups. I did manage a little sewing, but didn't finish all I'd hoped for.

3. Do you prefer vegetables or fruit? I prefer vegetables. I do like fruit but find vegetables more interesting. This Sausage, Green Bean and Sweet Potato medley is a concoction derived from the need to use up more of those beans.

4.  Along with freezing green beans, I've canned applesauce and tomatoes this week. Just one canner full of each. This is such a rich time in the garden. Our apple trees produced a couple of dozen apples, not bad for the second year. All over our area there are abandoned apple trees. We collect apples from them to make applesauce. I'd like to bake a couple of pies for the freezer, too.

5. The changing light and cooler nights are indications of the season turning. Days are still hot and sunny. Little Miss S's mother purchased some second hand pink boots for the rainy days ahead and now that's all the little girl wants to wear. With rainbow striped socks and a flower print skirt.

The last weekend of summer is here. School might or might not begin on Tuesday (our province's teachers are involved in some labour action). Tim will be flying in from points east tomorrow afternoon and I'll meet him at the airport in Vancouver, then we're taking a few days for a little trip.

Have a wonderful weekend! Enjoy the golden days of summer.

  2. Your echinacea looks great still. Mine is pretty well done for the year! I love it though as it blooms all summer!

    Enjoy your get away!

  3. Mmm! I would love to harvest and preserve more of our fruit (we have about 15 fruit trees in addition to lots of berries, kiwi and grapes), but the heat gets to me every year. Of course, as I am not a morning person, I get too late of start which doesn't help either.
Have a blessed trip next week.
    Blessings,
    Aimee
PS: Little girls and pink! My granddaughter has a pair of pink boots too:)

  4. I think you accomplished a lot, in my humble opinion, and have stocked your "cupboards" for the winter months. Our garden is finished here except for a few straggling welcomed tomatoes. Enjoy your time away!

  5. Oh I love the pink boots!! It's just plain adorable that she wants to wear them. I love little girls. (Yes, boys too.)

I agree that the flower does look like a watercolor.

  7. How nice it will be to taste those beans and applesauce in the middle of winter. I like how you are making use of those apples from the abandoned trees.
Your sausage, green bean and sweet potato meal looks so good. In answer to your question, I'm not sure that I can choose a favorite among fruits and vegetables. I like them both.
The story of Little Miss S's pink boots is so sweet. I like her colorful fashion sense.
Enjoy your getaway and don't forget the camera :).

  8. You have been very busy in the garden. I prefer fruit. Our garden is a shameful mess this year. Too many other things kept us busy. I hope we can do a better job next year. Your freezer will be full for the winter. Happy Week End.

  9. I love echinacea for some August colour in the garden. We put some in large pots as well this year, for some perennial colour by the door. They really don't like to "get their feet wet" so we'll see how the pot drainage goes over the rainy winter. . . Have a good mini-vacation with your husband.

  10. Those boots must be comfortable or else they really are a fashion statement for your little grand to want to wear only them. Cute!

I prefer fruit a thousand times more than vegetables unless the vegetables are raw. But then, we've had this discussion. Now I have learned to enjoy the flavors of cooked vegetables and so, like a baby, I puree the veggies for yummy soups and get them down the hatch that way.

Have a wonderful trip away! Sounds good.

  11. I'm smiling at the sweet little girl in her hot pick boots. I have a wee grand that decides what to wear as well...appropriate or not.

You had a most productive week!

  12. A wonderful homey post - love the flowers and the fresh vegetables. I like fruit - but find that vegetables give me more chances at creative meals - fruit is a sidelight - or a light snack. I do miss the fresh fruit when it is gone though.

Love the pink boots - for years and years our grandson Ben would only wear boots - since he was about 2 - and oh the cute boots he had - firetrucks, dogs, frogs, bears - now he is into wearing crocks - though he does like sneakers from time to time too.

    Enjoy your little get-away.

  13. We just planted a new Cone Flower at my mom's place next door this summer. They are so pretty.
Wow you've certainly been busy with the canning. I love Green Beans but not frozen as they just don't taste the same as fresh.
Now your Applesauce would be something I'd find tasty.
I've noticed it's been getting darker quicker now. So not ready for what follows after Fall but time marches on.

Your granddaughter in her pink boots makes me smile. :)

  18. Ahhh, pink boots are the best, especially with rainbow socks. I prefer fruit above veggies, but did freeze some French green beans this week and dried some plums from our tree. Hoping to dry some tomatoes this next week. My son made catsup with the tomatoes this week. Just love this time of year. Love coneflowers in the garden and have a few too. Happy weekend and happy adventuring.

  19. You're getting some beautiful colours out of that new camera. Can you send me a copy of that last picture? It'll be nice to have one with myself in it.

  20. You've certainly kept busy in the garden and kitchen.
I likely eat the same amount of veggies as I do fruit - lots!
    Enjoy your few days away!

  21. It sounds like summer might just go on and on for kids...what a strike this has been.

Those boots are adorable...if I had a camera near them, they would be the star of the show, well next to your grand...she is totally adorable.

  24. I so love coneflowers, wish we could grow them up here. And love the pink boots! Happy freezing and canning and have a lovely trip with your hubby when he gets home.

  25. I always enjoy your "Five on Friday" Lorrie - it's a good way to sum up the week!

The purple cone flower is lovely and I believe it attracts the butterflies. I've realised I need more plants that will give the garden interest going into Autumn too.

Lovely to see Little Miss has a mind of her own! Pink gumboots are adorable!

    Enjoy your weekend.
