Beauty in the Wild

Yes, there was snow. None at first, then just a little beside the trail and soon we were crunching through the snow that fell yesterday, softened a little and froze again overnight.

The temperature was perfect for hiking, not too cold, not too warm. We hiked up to Chester Lake and then around the lake, picking our way along the scree on one side. We are so thankful that we are both strong and healthy enough to enjoy these excursions into the semi-wilderness.

Here's a photo of a Vancouver Island tree-hugger in the Alberta Rockies. Notice the new hiking boots? They made the hike even more pleasant.

A view on the way down. You'll notice most of the snow disappeared as we descended. But the vistas were just as awe-inspiring.

Confession time: These photos were taken with my husband's I-Phone. I lugged my new camera all the way up and back, but after a couple of photos at the beginning, my battery died. I was rationing photos because I forgot my battery charger at home. The last charge disappeared rather quickly. I'll know better next time. And an extra battery might be included in my bag!

  5. You two look like you're having great fun...and why not? Such beautiful scenery, time away, time together, and, as you say, strong and healthy enough to enjoy it!

  6. How lucky your husband had his phone and that it has a camera as to have missed these photo opportunities would have been a real shame as you couldn't then have shared the hike with us. Having the right boots on makes all the difference to a walk doesn't it? Beautiful photos thanks for sharing.

The first snow is always welcomed. We saw all about it on the weather network. Here is is very hot and humid for the beginning of September.
Extra batteries are something I always carry with me. The camera phones do a fantastic job now. I've even got a lens that I can add to my iPhone. How did we survive without modern technology?

I think the photos are great.
Such a neat place to visit...you're smart to go now while you both can walk & climb with ease. DH can't do that now.

  19. The prairie skies are so beautiful (your previous post) and as varied as the landscape. I heard there was snow near Banff on Wednesday. How fun that you were there and got to hike in it! Our plane from Calgary was delayed yesterday morning as it had to be de-iced!! It was +4 and there was frost on parts of it. Better to be safe I guess. Beautiful scenery in the mountains. I don't think I'd be prepared to hike in snow though. I have learned to carry an extra battery with me and to bring my charger when I'm away from home more than a day. Thankfully, my camera came with a spare battery! :)

  22. What a beautiful place to hike! Yes, it is great to celebrate that you can still do it. Such incredible beauty all around you on that jaunt. The iPhone did a terrific job to document the story.

And I had to laugh about the battery confession. I always recommend extra batteries. Batteries drain extra fast in cold weather too, so that fact contributed to the demise of yours. I went through 3 batteries each day up in Churchill when we photographed polar bears, and then charged them up in the evenings when we got back to the motel room.

Since I was a little girl I've loved mountains, they have a special aura.
