Snowshoes on the Porch

Tim told me he purchased these snowshoes at Northern Hardware in Prince George some time during high school. That would be the early 70s. They were stored all the years we were in Ecuador and Tim's been trying to get rid of them since we moved back to Canada. But I have visions of decorating a family room in a woodsy-rustic style some time and have managed to hang onto them.

I saw this idea via Pinterest and thought, AHA! A use for the snowshoes. So today, in the rain, I decorated the front porch. Cedar clippings are from the hedge, and a little holly from the bush nearby.

This is the first year we've had this little porch which is much larger than the sloping square stoop previously here. I don't know why contractors put power meters on the very front of houses. So unsightly. I pretend it's not really there.

Inspiration struck again when I thought of the Ikea lanterns that are seldom used. I lit the candles for the photo, then again just before Tim came home.

Greenery, pine cones and gold balls in a planter.

A simple wreath on the door as the finishing touch. I guess my look this year, at least for the outdoors, is rustic woodsy! I'm liking it a lot.

Do you decorate with a theme? Have you ever snowshoed?

  3. It looks so pretty and how nice to have a porch to decorate. I would love snowshoes like that, and they are still useful as made as well as as you have shared. I spent some time in hospital Tuesday and Wednesday and so trying to make some visits~

I don't have snowshoes, but I've used sleds many years and then the usual assortment of regular decorations. We have wetlands on our property and I have been out there twice bringing branches and berries back for both outside and inside. Love your porch.

  7. What was once old is new again, so snow shoes have new purpose. The front porch is festive and inviting, a nice welcome for hubby coming home.

  8. Oh Lorrie...I LOVE this idea & you've inspired me. I'm going to dig out some wooden tennis rackets that I've been lugging around to the last 3 homes. They'll really look nice with something similar to what you did. THANKS for the idea!!!

  9. We have virtually the same pair hanging around, bought by Paul at about the same time, stored with the same reservations about letting them go. . . .But you've inspired me -- maybe I might even get ours decorated and out on the porch. Meanwhile, at least I know they look fabulous on yours!

its so pretty but like you said rustic, which I like.

    I've have never snowshoed.

I do not have a theme perse' but I like to have the decor coordinate. So simple greenery, lights, lanterns, candles, ribbon. The colors red, silver, green and white.

  12. I find that the simple look always works for me. The porch looks very welcoming. I guess I had better start with some decorations around here, but the Christmas Tree only goes up Christmas eve (a family tradition from my German childhood.

  20. Would you believe I have an almost identical pair of snow shoes right beside me? We've had them leaning up against the book cases almost since we moved in here 17 years ago. What a cute idea for them! Your porch looks inviting. I always struggle decorating our porch.

  21. Very pretty! I have snowshoed with similar showshoes ~ back in the 60s and early 70s. Thank goodness they're making them smaller and lighter now. :)
    LOVE your woodsy Christmas porch!

I did go snowshoeing once and thought it was the most exhilarating experience, out there in the wilderness with just three of us and the deep, white quiet - my, did my legs ache the next few days, though.

Your porch decor is so cheery!

  25. I love the cedar clipping and the snow shoes! The scent of the cedar is so nice. I've never done anything except hike a little in snow. We hiked today and some of the sand on one trail was lose and hard to walk on. I tromped around in it in my hiking shoes. Does that count? heehee! Holiday hugs, Diane

  29. What a lovely Christmas vignette on your porch! And Northern Hardware in Prince George, one of my favourite stores in the whole world. If you needed it, Northern Hardware had it tucked away in some dusty corner or up in the attic somewhere! We snowshoe every winter, my hubby has a pair of the same lovely wooden snowshoes but we both also have the new light aluminum frame ones. Hmmmm, think I now have a new use for his wood and sinew snow shoes LOL!

  33. I decorate according to the room . .. the living room with it's white fireplace and light colored furniture gets a more formal vintage look, while the family room gets more of the rustic look with traditional colors. I enjoy both flavors. Okay.. your front porch looks so nice!

  34. I have never snowshoed, but cross country skied. I love the porch decorations, especially with the snowshoes. Very nice!
