January Days

In spite of the grey sky, this arbutus (madrona) tree seems to glow, reaching upward with twisted limbs.

Primroses appear on nursery shelves and outside the grocery store. Mine are not yet blooming, but soon.

I've been very uninspired with photo taking so far this January. Both of these photos are from two years ago. Work and other projects have kept me indoors other than for an evening walk with Tim. As the light increases I'm hopeful that my photo taking mojo will return. In the meantime, I'm looking for sunshine wherever I can find it.

Linking to Sunlit Sunday, hosted by Karen of My Little Home and Garden.

  1. Those pictures are so lovely! So bold and vivid and colorful... thanks for sharing!!

Anyhoo, I found you through a fellow blogger and thought I would just stop by and say hello! It would totally make my day if you did the same... or better yet, keep in touch! <3 - www.domesticgeekgirl.com

  2. The tree is amazing - it should be a mural on a wall. I am having trouble with photos this January too - all this rain - are you buttoned down for the wind and rain coming tonight? We've already had quite a bit of rain - no wind yet - but I hear that it is coming. Now that my cold is finally going away I think I'll be more enthused to take pictures. My primroses are not blooming either - oh right, I don't have any yet - maybe I'll pick some up one day soon.

  3. This is the wettest January we've had in years although it's not cold I still search out any rays of sunshine that come our way. We have bright yellow primroses in the garden already and I've spotted one or two in the lane, too.
    bon dimanche

  4. Beautiful photos!
Especially the one of your primrose made me happy.
There can't be too many pictures of Primulas! :)

  5. So that's what an arbutus looks like! The water behind looks cold. BRRRR.

Little primulae are always cheering, their sweet faces are joyful!
Mine are trying to emerge in the back garden, but as fast as they do, little beige slugs munch up the petals! We're left with the dark yellow centres only, on stalks
You wouldn't think they (slugs)...naughty things... could survive the frosts and cold, but they're tough apparently!
Soon we will have buds, then blossoms...oh it can't come soon enough!
Your camera will be working overtime then : )

  6. Arbutus trees are so beautiful. My garden primroses are flowering now, more to come, and there are daffodils in so many gardens now.

  9. Well, you brought some sunshine into MY home this morning, Lorrie! That arbutus (madrona) tree is spectacular...never seen anything like it.
Every year, I buy the primroses that pop up in my grocery store & I baby them until it warms up. I've tried planting them later but I have yet to see one of them survive our harsh winters. I look forward to seeing yours!

  11. I love the shape of the arbutus tree, one of my favourite trees to see when visiting BC. Enjoy those little bits of sunshine when you can.

  12. Ditto. I am glad to hear that I am not the only one suffering from the January Blahs. Today I am going to make valentines. There is not so much outside to photograph anyway. I am glad that we are keeping each other company. Have a great week, Lorrie.

  13. Beautiful shot of the Arbutus tree, Lorrie. Hopefully the sun will come out soon. We are all feeling a little sun deprived across Canada today. Think I will treat myself to a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the week. Have a super week.

  14. Hello Lorrie
It is ok to take a rest from you normal routine. I love your image of the arbutus tree, it is so unusual and I also love primroses and cowslips.
Have a wonderful week filled with sunlight
    Helen xx

  15. Lorrie, these are beautiful works of nature - and yes, like you, I'm having a hard time finding loveliness to photograph at present. I must look for some primroses soon, they are so pretty.

  16. What a stunning arbutus tree you have captured for us today...I think we all need to take a break from our hobbies from time to time...
I have not been inspired to paint for months but when the urge strikes I'll be ready.
It's a blustery day out today and we were planning to take the grandchildren to the park...might be a playday inside the house!

  17. The bark on Madrona trees is so interesting. Lovely views beyond the tree!

  18. My, but the arbutus tree has a pleasing shape and deep red bark.
The primula is pretty, I noticed some in our grocery store last week but I purchased a bunch of carnations. It's just that time of year, my blogging inspiration is not there either so I'll just plod along until it returns. :-)

  19. Well, we can't always be in top form with photo taking. There is very little this month to photograph here except gray and sometimes rainy days. You sound really busy. Hope you are all over your virus.

  20. Sometimes I think that January conspires to both fill us with hope, and bring us to our deepest depths, all at the same time. It`s both a high, and a low....

As for snow, we got another 6 inches last night...and my husband reminds me that we will be getting our annual cold snap in Feb. Ah life.

  21. I remember that tree am happy to see it again, Lorrie!. The colour is amazing and the shape is striking against the backdrop of the water. I hope you're soon inspired to take more photos, although there's nothing wrong with catching your breath in January.

  22. That arbutus tree is so beautiful and unique. Primulas are so pretty and I've seen them in the stores here too. I hope you get your mojo back. Have a blessed week Lorrie.

  23. Yes, searching out sunshine in January is like a game and makes me happy when I find it.
Can't wait to go to the market and see some flowers. This morning as I was resting I would
open my eyes and notice how the light coming from the windows changed the light in the room.

  24. Those are lovely photos Lorrie.
During the cold dreary winter months I lose my photography mojo too - dull days don't inspire outdoor creativity!
It's the perfect time to draw on the bank of photos stored in our computers and visit the sunny days and happy times of summer!
Remember, Spring is waiting in the wings to surprise you very soon!
You write so well Lorrie, I always enjoy my visits to your lovely blog!
    Warm hugs
    Shane
