Sinking into the Quiet

Purchasing stock in Kleenex* would have been a good thing. Since Sunday I've been sniffling and reaching for tissue after tissue. Ugh. I've done very little. But I think I'm feeling a little better today (I think I am, I think I am, I think I am.)

In a burst of energy this morning I moved photos from my camera to my computer. These Wine-poached Pears with Creme Anglaise served as dessert at my parents' place last week. Some of the pears were overripe, some under. C'est la vie. We're into gluten free desserts at family gatherings these days due to a family member recently diagnosed with celiac. Ho hum.

As I was feeling even more energetic, I moved the photos from my phone to my computer as well. We had dinner at Les Faux Bourgeois with our daughter and SIL. Daughter ordered Moules Marinières (Mussels in a white wine sauce) and we all shared. All of our meals were good, but if I ever get back there, I'm definitely ordering this dish. The fries were the best I've ever had outside of Belgium and the mussels and sauce simply delectable.

Since I was feeling so spectacular this morning, I took my camera along when I dumped the kitchen waste into the compost bin. We've had a very mild winter and many of the shrubs still have green leaves. This jasmine shows the effect of a little frost and rain.

All that activity has left me exhausted so I'm back to sipping lemon honey tea with my feet up on the couch, tissue box to hand. Sniffle, sniffle.

  1. Your blog has not been updating so now I find that I have two posts to read. Since I am sipping coffee with a tablespoon of coconut oil added, I am content. So sorry to read that you have a cold and are battling sniffles. I am sure that you know all the remedies so TLC sounds good for the rest of the day. Perhaps your husband will bring supper home or make it...wouldn't that be lovely? The best fries are in Brussels?
Now who would ever know that?! I must make some pears in cream sauce...it is such a pretty and
delicious dessert. Besides it is the 12th day of Christmas.

  3. You poor girl. It's a day for you to sip your tip and curl up with a soft blanket and a good book. I hope you're well soon.

  4. Sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. I've managed to stay clear of all colds and viruses while so many around me have gotten sick, sometimes more than once. Transferring and organizing photos can certainly take a while. No wonder you need to rest again. Ha! Best wishes, Tammy

  6. I used almost one kleenx box per day when I was sick last week. Still lingering but better. It sounds like you were pretty productive when you had that burst of feeling better! Get well soon.

Your photos are all lovely, as always and they are making me hungry. Those fries look very tempting.

  8. I'm hoping that the scratchy throat I'm feeling doesn't lead to anything. Those pears are so beautiful. Hope your need of tissue diminishes quickly!

  11. Oh, you poor thing. I hate sniffles. They make your head all foggy and all you want to do is sit ( and eat stuff but you can't taste it so what's the use ???)
Those pears look delish and I've always wanted to try mussels but never been game. I'm pretty sure I'd like them so perhaps next time they're available I'll give them a go.

Lorrie, my comment disappeared so I hope this doesn't post twice.

    Feel better soon!

Kleenex would be an excellent investment for me too! I've been coughing from the cold weather. Time to break out the humidifier.

  17. I do hope that your cold leaves soon. Knock on wood, no bugs here. The pears do look elegant and delicious. Her we still have snow on the ground, some of which melted today. Bad weather on its way. Keep the tissues handy.

  19. Hope the cold leaves in a hurry. The pears look great - good for a winter dessert. I'm glad the rain has gone. Did you get snow? They did up by the border - we got a few spits of it in amongst the rain yesterday.

  21. Sorry to hear that you are not feeling great, resting on the couch sounds like the right place to be, tea with lemon and honey a perfect companion. The moules mariniere looked delicious, a favourite meal here in Normandy and so simple to prepare. Get well soon.

  24. I remember you saying you had the wine poached pears and it's nice to see a photo of them. Ugh, no more pie or cake for dessert, don't think I'd like that.
Hope your cold gets better soon, my hubby has had the flu for a couple of days and is finally feeling better today.

  25. Hi Lorrie,
So nice to meet you. I hope you feel better soon. There are so many germs out there right now that I always keep my hand sanitizer close at all times. Lovely pics. Take care, Karen

  26. I'm sorry about your cold. I've had my share this winter too. Trying to nurse an ear back to being able to hear properly now. All that aside... I had to comment on those poached pears. Who needs gluten when you have a dessert like that? They are beautiful and I can just imagine the taste with the Creme Anglaise.
