Early Fall on the Prairies

Mid-September mornings in Alberta lean more towards autumn than summer. Clear, bright air. Tim and I flew over the Strait, over British Columbia, and over the Rockies to attend a wedding and an 85th birthday celebration.

One morning I got up early to walk around the ponds nearby our lodging. The sun crawled slowly up from behind the hills. Dull-leafed trees changed to gold.

Autumn draws the eye with irresistibly colored trees. There's still plenty of green, but yellow will soon take over.

Scuffling my feet in crunchy leaves is one of my favorite fall activities. Wonderful sound. I kick the leaves as high as possible and down they twirl. Do you scuffle in autumn leaves?

Isn't it lovely?

We're home again, tired and content to sit with a cup of tea and a snack. Suitcases are unpacked and tomorrow will be here soon enough.

Over the week I'll be catching up with lots of things - what my students have been doing, laundry, and blog visiting - to name a few of them.

  1. We're having a beautiful fall here in Alberta. Glad you had a chance to experience it yourself!

  2. Stunning photos/ Yes even in my 70a I do still scuf in the leaves and sometimes even skip a step or two! Why not? Autumn hasn't quite arrived here yet although the early mornings are sometimes misty and some leaves are beginning to turn.

  3. Oops - need to put my glasses on I see I have made several mistakes in my comment and meant to say in my 70s and scuff!

  4. Glad I'm not the only one who makes errors in comments!
It does bring back those childhood moments when you walk in a pile of crunchy Autumn leaves!
    How lovely those trees look.

  5. I think Alberta is a little bit advanced on us here, Fall-wise : )
We have dull greens, with some yellowing but no reds and oranges yet...all in good time, I'm reluctant to say goodbye to summer. But I will embrace it when it comes!

It must have been a serene and lovely moment, wandering round the still lake ...
You captured it beautifully in your pictures and words, Lorrie.
    Have a good week!

Beautiful landscape. We don't have that much color 'yet.' Hope school is going well. :-)

  7. Yes, it is beautiful! I'd love to visit Alberta one day. Actually, I'd rather teleport than drive the journey!

  9. Your fall is well ahead of ours! Gorgeous!
Scuffling in autumn leaves is one of life's simple pleasures. :)

  10. Alberta appears to be well ahead of us in the leaves changing colour...but then they'll have snow long before us too.
I do like to scuffle the leaves, piles along the side of the road are just waiting for people like us. :-)

  12. It does already look so beautiful there - perhaps another month or so here for color like that, everything still green.
Personally I always look forward to Fall, especially October my b'day month and the month for many in the family.
As for right now, off to France Thurs. and looking forward to Autumn colors in the vineyards when we reach the south - my brother's area is already changing color now the grape harvest is in - I know from other visits at this same time of year it should be lovely - if the sun shines especially!

Have fun now you're back Lorrie - especially with friends!!!
Wish I could be there with you.
    Hugs - Mary

  13. Lorrie,

A gorgeous glimpse of Autumn in Alberta. Around here we're seeing similar sights. And yes, scuffing in the crinkly leaves is a favourite treat of this season! I'll go out of my way if I'm on a walk to find a pile to crunch through. Haven't kicked them up to watch them fall again -- will put that on my 'to do' list for next walk around the neighbourhood.

    Thanks for a lovely visit.

  15. What lovely fall color . . . I miss that. We get a little, but here in the desert we do not have the trees that you have :)

  17. What a feast for the eyes! The leaves are so beautiful. We are several weeks behind this, so I am anticipating the beauty that you've shown here.

Have a good week settling back in.

Very lovely for sure. I love to be able to combine a couple of special events in one trip. A wedding and 85th birthday celebration sound great! So happy to welcome fall tomorrow!

  20. You have much more color than we do and your photos are lovely. I'm with you with scruffing up the leaves as I walk. But I do miss the smell of burning leaves, which we did regularly when I was a child--on the curb by our suburban home. No longer allowed. How I loved those little fires

  23. It's been pretty nice here in Alberta the past week with quite a bit of sunshine and lovely days with an autumn feel to the air. The leaves are all gold and yellow and falling fast though. One more day here then back to NB to enjoy fall again. :) Have a great week Lorrie.

  24. Wonderful photos! I'm a big fan of kicking up fall leaves as well...and I love the fragrance of that activity missed with the sound, the movement, the feel of the cooler air....

  25. It's absolutely gorgeous! We have no foliage change here as yet in my area of Pennsylvania so I was surprised, quite pleasantly, to see your lovely scenic shots!

  26. Don't the colors seem to be early this year? One of the reasons I love autumn is the array of colors.

  27. A beautiful post Lorrie! Love those autumn colours. It's still green in Rotterdam. I think it will be another month before the colours change here. Have a great week!

  29. Such a lovely place, Lorrie! Wonderful setting for a wedding and a birthday celebration.
We have a lot of yellow leaves by now... and the orange ones of the rowans and some red ones of the trees and shrubs I'm planting. :)
Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos!

  33. How I am loving seeing the first signs of Autumn. Your colors in your photos are just spectacular.

  34. Beautiful photos! I was amazed to see the leaves turned and some bare trees while in Calgary too. No reds in the trees there though unless they are Japanese maples. I couldn't help but notice that there are a lot of ponds in Alberta. In subdivisions and in rural areas...everywhere. We noticed the farmers getting crops in as well and the fresh cut fields look so nice. I'm glad you had a great visit. We were so close! :)
