Just a Touch of Fall

A little house fluffing over the weekend had me thinking of a better way to organize the earrings I wear often. I tend to leave them on the bathroom windowsill or on the top of my jewelry box.

A few pieces of blue and white (one from Spain, one from Holland, both gifts from children), a thrifted consomme cup and an old blue willow cup from Japan play nicely together on a silver tray.

"Height is needed," thought I. So a crystal vase filled with hydrangeas that will dry in situ was added. One cup holds my opera length strand of pearls, the other my watches. The driftwood stick is something I pulled out of a coat pocket - bits and pieces often come home from a walk.

The sun streams through the window, highlighting the varying shades of petals.

There. One corner of the house has a little touch of fall. How's it going around your place?

  1. You have devised a lovely way to organize your jewelry...a mix of function and beauty!

The term "in situ" was new to me, so I had to dash off for a bit to look it up. (I love learning new words/phrases!) Now I am interested in how you dry your hydrangeas with this method. I am assuming that you have no water in the vase? Do they hold their form as they dry in an upright position?

  3. Looks lovely and the color of the hydrangeas are gorgeous. I need to look up opera length pearls. Great way to keep them.

  4. Isn't that pretty! And so 'un-pumpkinny' too!
We rarely see house decor changing from season to season here. Maybe we should be more aware.

  5. How lovely Lorrie! You really have a good eye for decorating.

  6. Oh I wish I was as artistic; my bits of jewelery (beads and broches no real jewels) live in a drawer and the longer strings od beads hang together on an old tie hanger in my wardrobe nothing as artistic as your lovely display I fear. I love to see how you manage to have flowers and table runners (table top is never clear here) and lovely arrangements on your mantlepiece and so on in your home. I live vicariously just viewing your lovely home and carrying on here as normal and as Elizabeth says we don't tend to alter things with the seasons either!

  7. Its so lovely!! What a wonderful set up. I, too tend to just lay my jewelry around..ususally on my night stand. Hope to do a little bit of fall decorating around my house this weekend.

  8. A much prettier place for you jewelry than the window ledge, Lorrie!
And you can display the treasures your children brought you home.
Hydrangeas are my favourite flower. I love all of their colours.

  9. A good idea to tuck jewelry in some blue and white china pieces which give them a pretty background. The hydrangeas are lovely fall colours and will look nice as they dry.
I have a couple of plastic craft containers with little squares inside to keep my earrings and necklaces sorted by colour. Broaches, pins and other odds and ends are in there too, easy to find and they both fit in the top drawer of my lingerie chest.

  10. Very lovely Lorrie - your hydrangeas are so pretty - I don't have any that have changed to that color this year.
I love blue and white china anything - and that long dish is prefect for your earrings.

That looks so nice. I like the idea of using the china pieces for storage. All my fall touches are still outside. Nothing taken out of storage yet...

  14. I like that "house fluffing" Love what you did with the blue and white china - great idea. I like what you did with the hydrangeas too. I baked some pumpkin bars tonight - guess that is a little start towards fall.

  15. Now that works. I always enjoy hydrangeas I suppose because I don't grow them. Yours do complete the scene and no doubt raise your spirits as you start your workday. Much prefered over the window sill.

  16. Very pretty way to display your jewelry, Lorrie. The hydrangeas are the ideal finishing touch. Not much fall decorating happening over here yet.

  19. Love the sun streaming in onto your hydrangeas and tray. My peegee hydrangea is just starting to turn pink here and there now.

  22. What a lovely, and useful vignette you've created, Lorrie. I love the light streaming onto the tray, too. You have a way of capturing the moment through a photo.

  23. Pretty little dishes are the best for organizing jewelry. Little touches are gradually making an appearance in my house. Dried hydrangeas and little white pumpkins for now.

  24. The tray looks lovely Lorrie. I would like to actually feel the fall before welcoming it, it is still very hot and humid here. But I've began to do some deep cleaning and light decorating all the same :-)

  25. You are a gifted home maker. I never thought that I could put hydrangea blossom in a vase without water. Clever you. I shall do what I often do when I come here: copy you.
There are hydrangea bushes in the garden which cry out to have a bloom or two snipped off and preserved.

  26. A very pretty vignette, Lorrie, and practical, too, for all those pairs of earrings! Don't you love it when that happens?

  27. Pretty as a picture comes to mind and I realize it is a picture. =)
My earings end up on top of the jewelry box too.

  28. Summer is captured in the faded tones of those hydrangea petals...a perfect compliment to the gorgeous blue and white dishes.

  29. What a lovely and useful vignette you created there. Aren't hydrangeas the best, the way they dry so nicely, and preserve their beautiful colors?

  30. I love hydrangeas! I especially love them dried. Beautiful images this day!

  31. Not too much fall decorating going on here yet. Hopefully will get to it? Your vignette is so pretty.

  32. This looks beautiful, Lorrie!! I love these ideas for storing jewelry! You've included my very favorite things with blue and white porcelain and hydrangeas. Your hydrangeas are truly gorgeous!

To answer your question, I haven't started adding my fall touches around the house yet, and I need to get to it! I'm anxious to welcome my favorite season of the year. :) Thanks for sharing, Lorrie, and have a great week!

  33. What a gorgeous vignette. I just want to come for tea now!

You mentioned you were doing a little house fluffing. Mmm... the other day we got home from our BC trip. I bought a few little treasures while there and I was rearranging one of the cupboards in the kitchen to make room. Oh dear... that cupboard requires more than a fluff; it rather needs a downright scrub out from the dust and grimy something that got all over the dishes. (I'm not even going to guess the last time I cleaned way up in there, but it requires elbow grease... which I'm actually looking forward to getting into these cooler days).

    Thanks for a lovely post!

Wishing you a beautiful day, Lori...

  34. You have put together such a lovely combination of pretty things. Your blue and white pieces are just right with the hydrangeas. Aren't the petals amazing on it, so many variations of color. Very artistic composition, Lorrie!

Your organization is beautiful. All I've done is clean an attic and a garage - not anywhere near as pretty but it is organized. :-)
