Moonlit Thoughts

"The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas"

Alfred Noyes' poem came to mind this evening as we walked, shortly after dinner, under the moonlight. The lights of the house offer a warm contrast to the chilly looking moon.

After arriving home, I took my camera and walked a little ways down our street to capture these views. It's a Hunter's Moon - a traditional name given for a full moon in October. Or maybe that's tomorrow night. It might be raining then, so I'm glad I took the photos this evening.

I've been thinking today about the whale watching tragedy that occurred not too far from us, where a boat capsized and 5 British nationals perished in the cold water. Twenty-one were rescued by locals who saw the emergency flares. One is still missing. My heart goes out to the families of those who lost their lives.

And the moon sails overhead, oblivious to what happens here on earth, its beauty and light seen by people the globe over. What a world we live in, broken and hurting, yet full of wonder and love, too.

  1. I can so empathise with you on your last paragraph. We know about the bad things in the world but let's not forget about the hope and beauty that are here too.

  2. We were so sad to hear of the accident, such a terrible way for a day to end.
    What a very beautiful moon.

  3. A beautiful moon which we won't see because of the weather. I am always struck by the thought that people the world over are gazing at the same moon I am. Your pictures are striking!

  4. We were deeply saddened at the horrific news of the whale watching boat tragedy. Having done similar, both in Hawaii and Antarctica - and on even smaller vessels including Zodiacs - it hit home that the water can be dangerous at times and lives can be lost so quickly and when least expected. I pray for the lost souls, their families and friends who are grieving, and for all who brave the seas of the world to bring us food. Lori dear, knowing you are boaters also, I hope your sails around Vancouver Island continue to be lovely and that you always reach safe harbor at the end of the day.

These photos are awesome - so glad you returned for the camera and captured such a beautiful night sky. I noticed the cloudy, almost full moon last night on the way home from the restaurant (the birthday celebration which was such a fun time), and as expected, this morning the rain has come in and it's dark and dreary outside.

Lori, I so loved the fun card - thank you very much for thinking of me. Each new year we are given is always a blessing - and to me, in all honesty, age doesn't really matter now. I'm just thankful! I know you probably feel the same and I hope your soon to arrive birthday will be a great occasion too.

Hugs and best wishes - Mary x

  5. Good moon shots are so hard to take and what wonderful photos you have. The tragedy was covered in the news here, too. I cannot imagine. I am comfortable in water, but I cannot imagine having to survive such an accident. Too sad for words.

  9. We've been enjoying the full moon in the hot tub the last couple of nights and I wonder if we have any health benefits from the moonbeams that shower us during this phase.
Very sad about the whaling accident.

  13. The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
    And the highwayman came riding—
    Riding—riding—
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.

Do you know we had to memorize that poem when I was in high school?
My dad taught English Lit at Penn State -years before I was born so I grew up on poetry and stories.

I love a Hunter's moon. It was beautiful here the last couple of nights but tonight the rain and wind are closing in. sigh...fall is ending.

That was a terrible tragedy with all those lives lost. Heartbreaking! xo Diana

  14. The Moon has truly been glorious and we too have been enjoying, marveling and even sharing moon tales, as we have walked in the evenings after an early dinner.
I am sad as well over this recent tragedy...

  15. I did the same thing...walked up the street, took photos of the Hunter's Moon for a future post. AND I was glad that I did because the actual full moon wouldn't be seen the next night due to clouds and rain ! :)

    YOUR photos are amazing!!
