Sunlit Memories

I awoke Saturday morning to the sound of wrens chirping. And light. So wonderful. The promised rain forecast was a dud! Instead, the sun shone and the birds chirped and I worked in the garden and didn't take one photo.

Instead, I'm showing photos from my trip to Europe with my sister and mother a number of years ago.

I'm happily anticipating our visit to England as a new adventure, and a return to France for more familiar adventures.

This window latch, found in the King's Grand Salon at Versailles, is one of my favorite images. How many hands touched the latch? Did anyone fling open the window and call to someone in the courtyard below, or was it all pompous duty? What stories this little detail could tell.

Linking to Sunlit Sunday, hosted by Karen of My Little House and Garden.

  3. Great memories - love the window latch. Wasn't the sunshine gorgeous - we fiddled the day away in the daffodil fields and had a picnic high on a rocky bluff above Anacortes - perfect day.

  4. Beautiful Lorrie - taking me back to Paris and Versailles!
I especially love your balcony photo with the potted geraniums.
We stayed at a lovely hotel which had such a balcony!
I'm also familiar with the window and door handles of the Palace of Versailles and I had the same thoughts. I would have loathed the life of a courtier - however it must have been wonderful to attend a grand ball in the Hall of Mirrors!
I'm not surprised Marie Antoinette preferred the quiet life of Le Petite Trianon.

  16. The door handle does beg certain questions, doesn't it? I was astounded at the antiquity in England--how buildings have withstood time and progress. I've not been to France, but to England twice, Scotland, and Ireland. My favorite in England? Yorkshire and a village named Haworth where the Bronte sisters lived. And the Globe theatre, of course. Good memories for you and especially that you traveled with your mom. Rain today. Sun tomorrow. The garden awaits.

  17. I love that the photo of the Eiffel Tower is so recognizable even though we can't see all of the structure. Wonderful shot! And yes, doors and door handles - touched and open by so many - can tell a thousand stories. That must have been a wonderful trip.

  29. wrens chirping and sunlight - what better combination of a wonderful day.
That tower reminds me of the trip we made four years ago - and we never went up the Eiffel !!

  30. I especially love the picture of the Eiffel Tower, but the golden latch looks to me the beginning of a wonderful story about.... well, whose hands have touched the latch. Just think of all the stories that could come from such a beginning. Would any of them end " and she lived happily ever after" ?

  36. That is a glamourous window latch! I've had similar thoughts when encountering age old items, about who touched them, used them, polished them and so worth. When in Spain and Morocco, I admired the many Hand of Fatima door knockers. My dear late friend zipped into a stall in a market in Morocco (unseen by me) and purchased one for me, the brass black with age. It doesn't have the striking plate, but hangs on the wall by my front entry. I'll look forward to photos of your upcoming travels.
