The Week That Was: On Land and Sea

Summer is flying by. So many good things to enjoy. One day we took part of the family to Portland Island on the boat. Azure skies, blue seas, calm water, and stunning views all around. Mount Baker floats above the clouds in the above photo.

The tide was low and we were able to explore rocky beaches where tide pools display the biodiversity of the sea. Purple starfish, orange sea cucumbers, transparent sea sacks, and so much more. Curious seals bobbed in the water watching us. A picnic lunch was eaten in the trees which gave shade on a very sunny day.

A Satyr Comma fluttered on very dry ground and I wondered if it was injured. It soon lifted off, hopefully to find more pleasant landing places.

Bald Eagles are a common sight, but it's not often I can capture them in flight. This one soared overhead, circling the boat several times before deciding there was nothing to catch.

On another day we visited Tod Inlet, a quiet place where old concrete pilings bear witness to the industry that once took place there. I don't believe I've ever seen as many boats anchored in the small inlet, everything from large yachts to tiny sailboats.

At home I'm cutting sweet peas every other day. I had so many yesterday that I divided them according to colour and placed them in individual vases. They perfume the room with sweetness.

Iris and Cora have been spending time here while their mother studies for her master's degree. One day we watched a little video about coral reefs and then the girls created their own coral reefs, using bits and bobs of craft supplies in wonderful ways.

There's an old song about the "lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer" - perhaps you know it. I told my husband this week that this summer is not the least bit lazy, and is mostly crazy with people coming and going at our house. I don't really mind the busyness and I'm trying to take time to just enjoy the garden and our new deck. It's a wonderful place to read in the evenings.

I do love summer. Sometimes I think we here in Canada try to pack so much into it because it's such a short season. People in other northern countries likely feel the same way. So I soak up the sunshine, eat handfuls of delicious fresh cherries, pick raspberries, and savour each day.

  1. Your sweet peas are amazing; I've tried many times but never succeeded .
What a wonderful trip; I think your are right; your summers are short but intense, and you are certainly making the most of your lovely surroundings.

  2. What pretty reefs! Your sweet peas have done well. Mine are coming towards an end, with stems becoming shorter, but still highly scented. There's nothing quite like them.
I remember when my daughter lived in BC , how she always said the Summer was so short, particularly for growing vegetables!

  5. We're the same in Michigan -- packing in as much as we can because it is short and what comes after is cold! You had grand weather for boating. I am missing my sweet pea bush -- it's at home and I'm north but when I go home this week, I hope to return with a big, beautiful bouquet!

  6. Mount baker looks magical! Great photo
The same here. Summer in Vermont feels too short a season. It has a waiting vibe, waiting for cooler days to go outdoors, waiting for the rain to stop, and waiting to have the energy when the weather is nice.

  7. That's such a pretty butterfly. Your Sweet Peas are very pretty too. I've given up n the annuals and now grow the perennials which do well but are limited in colours and have no scent.

  11. Loved seeing your waterfront photos. The last few days we have been having these wonderful summer breezes and my mind has been filled with summer sailing. Steve and I made so many wonderful memories on our sailboats through the years. I truly miss him and spending weekends on the water. Thanks for the photo that brought back sweet memories.

I concur that our summers are too short, although I admit that I'm a huge fan of cozy sweater weather!

  16. I love how you describe summer! It almost makes me love it . . . or is it the ideal that I love (without the stifling humidity we experience on the East Coast)? The little girls' coral reefs are splendid! Such creativity!

  17. What a treat to read your post today, Lorrie. I'm a little late to getting to it, but it's brought a lot of delight to my heart. I LOVE your array of sweet peas. And what a treat to see your granddaughters' craft project. It makes me want to create one now.

I like that phrase 'lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer'. One phrase that I love humming is that old Ella Fitzgerald song 'Summertime and the livin' is easy'. I'm glad for those days when the living is easy - which certainly makes up for the crazy, busy ones. :)

  18. Your summer looks wonderful to me. Boat trips, visiting places, having the grandkids around and enjoying the garden - it all sounds marvellous to me. I looked in the map where Portland Island and Tod Inlet are - I always love to orient myself about the places my blogging friends write about.

Ahhhh! Sweet peas, what an amazing fragrance! You are having a lovely summer. Now I know I am commenting of Butchart from your next post, but forgot to say something on it. Are you finding less tourists in your area this year? Just wondering. Happy anniversary, Butchart would be a lovely place to celebrate.
