On Saturday good friends hosted a Book Launch in their lovely garden. The book Life is Short but Wide has been available for about a month, but this was the official launch. I confess to rather dreading all the fuss as I'm more the person who likes to stay in the background rather than be a guest of honour.
However, It was a beautiful occasion and I felt very honoured, and had a lot of fun, too. Other friends brought the vase of pink roses and yellow snapdragons. They are lasting a long time, and I think of the book launch when I see them.
Having never been to a book launch, I didn't know what to expect. However, my friend, who has been to at least one launch, said that someone needed to introduce me. So I asked my three children to each say something. They were all born in Ecuador and grew up there; we returned to Canada when the youngest was 15. The older two had started university in Canada.
One spoke of all the moves we made and how we created homes wherever we lived. Another spoke of how we shared our home with so many people over the years - for meals, as houseguests, and so on. And the last spoke of home being an ambiguous term. For them home was Ecuador. For me, home was Canada, yet I made a home for my family wherever I was. It was interesting to listen to their well-expressed thoughts.
There was a fabulous spread of appetizers to enjoy, and a gorgeous cake, decorated very thoughtfully by my daughter-in-law who researched the flora of Ecuador and created a cake with elements such as eucalyptus, roses, vines, and orchids. It was also delicious!
Our friend Jules paints as a hobby and he created this thoughtful piece as a gift to inspire me to keep on writing. How gorgeous it is. I love the colours. There are little fireflies around the lamp post. I'll treasure this gift.
The weekend passed in a flurry of activity. My parents and sister and brother-in-law left on the Sunday afternoon ferry. Yesterday was spent puttering. A little laundry, a sewing project completed, and a few small garden chores including clipping more sweet peas. I have a variety of colours, but felt like creating a softer bouquet this time, with soft blue and palest pink blossoms. The photo is taken outdoors on the patio, but the flowers now sit on my bedside table where the scent wafts over me as I sleep.
Today, Tuesday, I've been out and about. A physio appointment and grocery shopping. This evening I'm going to a farewell party for my school principal who is moving on to other things. I'm looking forward to chatting with my former colleagues.
Congratulations! It seems that you had a beautiful day. The cake is beautifully decorated. I love sweet peas the colloids you chose are very nice
ReplyDeleteThank you, Catherine.
DeleteHow wonderful 💙 Congratulations.
ReplyDeleteDoes it say "Felicidades Lorrie" on the cake? Fabulous cake 💛
And the painting is out of this world, so beautiful.
Nice kids you have, great book launch ! 🌹
PS I've been to several book launches because I used to be a "book blogger".
All the pictures of books on my side bar, you can click on any os them and find a post.
Publishers gave me books to promote them. Hard work, though, not being paid actually.
Finally I got tired and to be honest it wasn't that easy to find new things to say in the end 🤔
Thank you, Rita. Yes, it does say Felicidades on the cake - a nod to when we spoke Spanish in Ecuador. I do have wonderful kids!
DeleteI can see that being a "book blogger" might be fun for awhile.
Congratulations Lorrie, on your Official Book Launch, which looks like such a lovely gathering. How pretty your book looks in its pretty blue cover, set beside the yellow and pink bouquets. The cake is indeed gorgeous, and so special with the blooms from Ecuador. Your children have had a special life living there, and now back in Canada, and I am sure it was wonderful to hear them speak of it. Sweet peas have such a nice fragrance, and the delicate colours are perfect for sweet dreams.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Patricia. Sweet peas are the prettiest things! You must be getting excited about your upcoming trip!
DeleteCongratulations, Lorie! What a beautiful and thoughtful book launch, and what a wonderful gift you gave your family to record all your experiences living, working and serving God in Equador. I enjoyed reading your substack very much.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely place to have your book launch. Ours for "Up the Lake" was up at our float cabin. A group even rented a houseboat to get here. I just purchased the Kindle version of your memoir from Amazon. It's so much easier for us to read on them since we travel around so much, and the backlit version works well in the dark when we turn our power off. Congratulations on writing your memoir and getting it published. - Margy
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely milestone, Lorrie. I’m so glad it turned into a day of joy instead of something to dread. There is something very moving about being seen and celebrated by the people who know the road behind the book. Congratulations... I hope this memory keeps encouraging you as you continue to write.
ReplyDeleteThat was a lovely book launch. Love the sentiments of your children, the caring of your friends and the work you put into creating that book. Congrats.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely celebration, Lorrie. The garden setting, the thoughtful words from your children, and that gorgeous Ecuador‑inspired cake all sound so meaningful. I love how your friends and family surrounded you with beauty and support — such a perfect way to honor your book. And those sweet peas on your bedside table are just dreamy. Congratulations again on this wonderful milestone.
ReplyDeleteOh Lorrie, this is so exciting. How fun to have your kids do the intro. And everything looks so pretty -- especially that amazing cake. What a wonderful group of friends you have to do this for you. You art friend is very talented and what a lovely and meaningful gift. And how cool is it to have a book to launch! Please share more about what it's about.
ReplyDeleteLorrie, how exciting! What a delightful way to launch your book. It seems that every detail was perfect, from your children's introductions to the beautiful cake to the lovely flowers. The picture painted by your friend is so special! I am happy for you!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Lorrie on your special day, it looks and sounds perfect in every way! What I first noticed was the colour theme matches your book, so pretty. Are the beige books wrapped in ribbon your draft copies?
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your book, Lorrie! How nice to celebrate with such a beautiful party. I love that your children introduced you. I’m sure it would have had me in tears :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a special day, Lorrie.
ReplyDeleteThe garden, the cake, and your children’s words all made it so meaningful.
I love how friends added their touches too.

ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the book launch! What a wonderful way to celebrate your amazing accomplishment!
ReplyDeleteHow exciting and congratulations! It must have been lovely to hear your children recount their childhoods and have friends and family there to honor this special occasion. x K
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Lorrie! This looks like a very lovely book launch and I love what your children said. I understand the sentiment about home being an ambiguous term. No matter how long we have been living in the US (25 years now), home will always be Germany for me. My husband and I did create a home here in our adopted country, California is where my daughter grew up, but she has returned to Germany because she wanted to get to know that part of her as well.
ReplyDeleteI just finished reading your memoir from the years in Ecuador. What an amazing life you and your family have lived, filled with giving and caring. - Margy
ReplyDeleteI published my memoir in 2008! It is very exciting. Good for you!
