The Sewing Husband and Some Pretty Flowers

Shortly after Christmas my husband bought himself a new toy. An old Pfaff sewing machine. Why? Because I wasn't thrilled with his plan to use my machine (newer and not as sturdy) to sew new canvas for the boat.

This man can do almost anything. He looked at videos on line about how to sew canvas covers, bought the supplies and stitched away, installing heavy duty zippers and snaps with aplomb. I'm impressed.

It was sort of cozy for a few weeks, his sewing machine at one end of the dining room table and mine at the other. We made a rule that my stuff couldn't cross the centre line - likewise for his.

Isn't this magnolia pretty? So creamy, but with a few lines marring the petals - probably from the weather. Hey, we all look a little marred with age, don't we?

This husband of mine recently had a birthday. We celebrated over a couple of weeks, while family was in town and then more quietly on the day.

My sons-in-law are wonderful fellows. The one in the photo above is doing dishes. They both do dishes, willingly, as do my son and husband. Lovely men.

For his birthday breakfast, I made Dawna's Cinnamon Roll Cake. Oh my. It was delicious. I halved the recipe with great success. Thanks, Dawna.

Cake rarely, if ever, is eaten at breakfast here. But it made a nice counterpart to the bacon and scrambled eggs alongside.

And more pretty flowers. I've decided that pink tulips are my favorite, although the yellow ones are close behind. Oh, but then there are white ones. Too hard to choose, I'll just like them all.

Two days of teaching done this week, and it's a short week, as is the next. I love being with the students, but full time does cut into things like housework, cooking, sewing and blogging. Still, it's a season and it will end.

I'm sipping a mug of honeyed warm milk before publishing this and heading off to bed. Nighty-night!

Thanks for the link to Dawna's blog. I think I will try to make that cake on Thursday or Saturday morning. Everyone will love to wake up to the smell of cinnamon!

  2. So glad that you enjoyed the Cinnamon Roll Cake and that halving the recipe worked out okay. I made it early last Sunday morning and texted Melissa to send Corbin and Keegan over for some .... they were both excited to eat cake for breakfast too! I so enjoy having her little family down the lane from us! I like how you used the different wafer cookies around the birthday cake ! Great idea!

  4. Yeah for your husby, as mine would be in the same boat, a pun of course. He has his own sewing machine too and is accomplished at many things, but when he puts his mind to doing something, it is done.

  5. What a nice mental picture--you at one end of the table and your husband at the other, the sound of sewing machines humming and things produced. Wow, zipper on canvas--that impresses me. I just love it when guys help with the dishes!

  6. Oh, if he can sew boat canvases - he's a keeper!! Happy belated Mr. Fabric Paper Thread, maybe one day we'll meet out on the water!

  7. What a lovely, heart-warming post! Plus there are wonderful images of flowers and cakes. :)
Wishing to you and your family a very joyful Easter!

  8. Happy Birthday to your hubby, Lorrie!

I can picture you two, sewing machines humming away, engrossed in details of the stitches, pausing for coffee breaks and chit chat!

The cinnamon roll cake looks and sounds scrumptious; will have to check it out. Your pink tulips are very pretty, and look so beautiful against the green of their stems. I am longing for my beloved lilacs and peonies, which probably will be blooming sometime in May, I guess, in Toronto this year.

    Happy Easter!

  9. Happy Birthday to your very handy husband. I am seriously impressed by his skills with the sewing machine. The birthday breakfast looks delicious and I think the fresh oranges balance out the cake, don't they? :)

  10. I love seeing a swathe of the same colour of tulips ... there are black ones that are gorgeous. A bit too windy for them here.
Isn't great how men will just try things and get on with it .... My other half is a dab hand at putting in zips in jeans which I wouldn't even have a go at ... me and the sewing machine are sworn enemies :)
    Enjoy the shorter weeks :)

  11. You have a handsome, and handy, hubby there, Lorrie. Sounds like he did good! Those old Pfaff sewing machines just can't be beat. My youngest son is like that, too. He looks online and can do anything. It always amazes me.

Your breakfast looks delicious!!! Have a wonderful April 1st. xo Diana

  14. Belated "Happy Birthday" to your very handsome & sweet looking husband!! I'm impressed with his sewing skills...don't think I'd want to tackle canvas covers with zippers, no less!
Cherish every single minute with him, Lorrie. I miss mine so much. Take LOTS of pictures & RECORD his voice...I sure wish I had.

  15. I admire Renaissance men very much! Love the special arrangements you enjoyed at the dining table. Happy Birthday to you hubby. I see he has celebrated the big 3-0!

  16. I love the idea of your husband having his own sewing machine. If mine wanted to sew I'd be happy to get him a machine, but he has other interests - and no boat to sew a canvas for. But he does do dishes - and laundry and is so kind and helpful, we are lucky indeed. One son-in-law hops up from the table and begins dishes before I can get to them - and they are always so sparkly.

I have pink tulips that are about to bloom. When buying the bulbs I had such a hard time choosing - so many favorite colors to pick from.

  17. What fun... sharing the dining room table for your individual sewing pursuits!

Oh, I know it's hard to decide which colours in flowers are my favourites... usually the ones I'm looking in the moment. Those pink one are delightful!

Happy birthday to your husband... wishes for many happy boating days in the year ahead.

Your birthday breakfast has given me inspiration for something special over the coming Easter weekend. Yum!

Happy Day, dear Lorrie.... thanks for your affirming comments on my recent post.

  19. Wow, that is awesome that your husband would tackle something like that. Happy Birthday to him. I think celebrating over 2 weeks is great. I love tulips and bought yellow this week.

  20. I am so impressed that your husband has taught himself to sew ! He will be saving so much by doing things for himself rather than ordering custom covers. Glad to hear that you are enjoying springtime in Victoria and it's lovely to see those tulips ! Thanks for sharing them.

  21. Wow, a man that can teach himself to sew! I can just picture the two of you at either end of the table making sure your supplies don't go over the middle. LOL
Lovely photo of your hubby for his birthday and I plan to halve the cake too. With only the two of us I try to make smaller desserts when possible.

  27. Your husband is a renaissance man! I can tell he had a wonderful birthday, too! Good men are hard to find and it sounds like you have them in your family in abundance. I do too! What a blessing.

The tulips are beautiful. Happy Easter to you and your family, Lorrie!

  28. I'm smiling here...as I read about your 'sewing hubby'. It all sounds so familiar! My dad bought himself a 'new' sewing machine at the thrift store a few weeks ago and is fixing, mending and sewing. I tried to tell him I could do his sewing for him...but he likes to do it all himself! He used to have a industrial machine to sew the upholstery for antique cars he was restoring. Maybe they are related!

Dawna's cinnamon roll cake looks delicious (as does the rest of the breakfast!). Lovely tulips.

Blessings to you and yours this Easter!

  30. I am impressed with your hubby, too. I think that you should show us the boat canvas that he made. I might want to try that, but I agree that I would not want to do it on my good machine. They do not make machines as sturdy as they once did. Your flowers are beautiful and that cake . . . well it's making my mouth water:) Happy Easter!

  34. How wonderful that your husband got inspired to sew. Happy belated birthday greetings to him. The contrast between the pink tulip petals and the green leaves is quite stunning. Easter blessings to you, sweetie.
