Five on Friday

We sat outside as the sun sank low against the Sooke Hills. While chatting with Tim, the light played on the flowers and I was struck by the echo of petals in the white container, so much so that I retrieved my camera for a couple of shots.

This pretty basket of lobelia, petunia and the smaller white flowers caught my eye in Charlottetown last month. So fresh and lovely. I'm afraid my hanging basket is looking rather the worse for wear with the extended heat.

I cut lavender this week. A bundle lies on the entry table and this little pouch in the china cabinet. I stitched the pouch a few years ago from a damask linen napkin from the thrift store and added a row of odd buttons to the cuff.

Cold and sweet. I like to keep some kind of frozen treat handy during the summer for friends and family. This is the second batch of fudgesicles so far. The recipe is below if you'd like to try it. Those of a certain age will recognize the Tupperware* molds - these are from my childhood.

Fudgesicles

3 1/2 cups milk (I used 2%)
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup baking cocoa
1/3 + 1 tablespoon sugar
2 eggs
pinch salt
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup semi sweet chocolate chips

Whisk together the milk, cream, sugar and cocoa powder in a medium saucepan. Continue whisking and heat over medium heat until very hot (but not boiling).

Beat the eggs in a medium bowl. Slowly pour about 1/2 of the milk mixture into the eggs, whisking to combine. Pour the egg/milk mixture back into the saucepan and combine well with the rest of the milk. Heat over medium heat until slightly thickened. Don't let it boil.

Remove from the heat and add the salt, vanilla and chocolate chips. Whisk until the chocolate chips are melted. Let cool and pour into popsicle molds.

Delicious on the hot days we've been having.

These pretty goldfinches twittered and fluttered outside the window of the Prince Edward Island Preserve Company as my friend Ann and I enjoyed our lobster croissants. I was so happy to see them for we don't have them here on the West Coast.

Today is a bit of this and that - some housework (the guest beds are well used these days) and a visit to the Butterfly Gardens with a Little Miss.

I'm linking up with Amy at Love Made My Home.

What are you up to today?

  4. Flowers, teacups, little birdies and chocolate goodies - some of my favourite things! And do you know, Lorrie, if it were not for those strange little birdies, all these photos could have been taken in England. Lavender, petunias, lobelia, hydrangeas... we have all of those. Thank you for a lovely post. x

  7. Snagged the recipe...just bought a mold set. It is for six. Wondering how much this makes as it seems as if it might be for more.

Love the little pouch for lavender...darling!

No goldfinches? Sometimes, they are the only sunshine we have.

  11. Five lovely things! I keep making up my mind to cut the lavender for pouches and then I see how much the bees are still enjoying it and I put it off again. . . Note to self: be more ruthless! I do want that fragrance indoors.

  15. Definitely eating popscicles. I remember the Tupperware, but didn't have them; so had to find new ones at the store. 4 in the set was not enough, so had to buy a second set. I am making them with half and half coconut water and fruit juice. Quite good and simple, plus mother approved. Smiling! Your flower photos are lovely.

Love hydrangea and lobelia - two of my favorites. Off to Penobscot Bay in Maine to do absolutely nothing for five days. :-)

  18. Lavender is my favourite! My lavender bush is ready to burst into bloom so will let the bees have their share first before I cut them - must be patient! Have a wonderful weekend xx

  19. Oh Lorrie, I've so enjoyed my visit to your post today. What beautiful photos of those gorgeous flowers. And what, you've got a real recipe for fudgesicles? Yah. I've had a craving all summer for them. Haven't had them in ages and ages, and this summer I can't get enough. I'll be trying out your recipe for sure.

I'm hoping to get back to my blog again soon. I posted something earlier and so I thought I'd just stop and visit a few friends too.

Hope the summer is going well for you!!

    Hugs,

  22. Fudgesicles, popsicles, frozen anything...it seems we have always got something freezing in the fridge...it's beyond hot, but today it's broken a bit. When I saw your Lobelia shot I was stunned...what they still have lobelia? Ours fried ages ago....lol.
