Officially Autumn: Five on Friday

1. The autumn equinox has come and gone. The sun slips low earlier and earlier. I search through my clothing for layers of warmth. No more bare feet. No more airy shirts. It's time for the coziness of sweaters and blankets.

2. Autumn arrives with gentleness, gliding in on thistledown in foggy mornings clearing to bright sunshine that has us taking off those early morning sweaters to enjoy the sun's radiant warmth on our backs.

3. Many of the leaves have been parched brown and crunchy by lack of rain. Now begins the fall of softly coloured leaves - not so intense as in the eastern parts of our country, but their lovely yellows stand out against the dominant evergreens.

4. These calm photos belie the busyness of autumn. The whirlwind of beginning teaching has not yet abated. Yesterday, I, along with 4 other teachers, accompanied a big yellow bus of 45 teenagers to Bard on the Beach in Vancouver where we enjoyed a production of Romeo and Juliet. It was a long day.

5. In my own garden the hydrangeas are tawny pink and faded blue. This weekend I'll clip the last bunches to dry for the winter. There will be a birthday party, some house puttering, and hopefully some time for reading and sewing.

  3. I've got my long trousers out, it's turned just a little bit chillier although we're supposed to be having a few more warm days. Lovely Autumn colours in your photos.

  10. Your early Autumn thoughts give me hope for sweater weather here in the SE USA. Our 90 degree temperatures don't seem to want to leave this year, nor does the humidity.

  11. Wouldn't a sweater the color of those hydrangeas...tawny pink...be great? Enjoy the autumn that has descended so gently. Ours blew in overnight.

  15. I'm glad Autumn has come in gently for you in your region. Beautiful images and descriptions. You had a busy week. It must have been an enjoyable day trip to the event, but also tiring so I hope you have opportunities to relax this weekend.

  16. Hello,Lorrie,
Lovely autumn scenes, you are moving towards autumn with some yellow leaves.

  17. Bard on the beach sound great but maybe your description of it being "long day" is telling. With a lot of kids, tough!

  22. The thing I like best about autumn is that I no longer need to feel guilty for sitting and reading.
And yes, those cosy socks and jumpers aren’t bad either.

  23. Such lovely photos and words about autumn! May your autumn continue to be cozy and gentle and maybe not quite as busy.

  24. Your Autumn looks delightful. Yes, the occasional sweater and an extra blanket have entered our lives too. Enjoy birthday celebrating. We will be doing that today also. Oh the hydrangeas and the leaves are most beautiful in their Autumn finery.

  25. One day it's hot and humid, the next cooler and autumn has arrived. I don't think we'll see the fall colour we're used to this year, the dryness and temperature haven't coordinated for that spectacular fiery show.
I haven't seen Romeo and Juliet in ages, I'm sure the performance was nice and the students behaved.

  26. Hope you've had an enjoyable weekend. Your photos show the beauty of autumn as it arrives. Its nice there's a few places where autumn is on schedule! As we broke a temperature record yesterday.

  27. You are so far ahead of me here ( In USA / Southwestern PA ) in regards to fall colour, the plants in general etc. yet! :) Lovely post :) You have such a wonderful way with words :)

  28. Lorrie, I love every single one of these photos (I always love your pictures). The mauve pink hydrangea is gorgeous. It was almost 90 degrees F here yesterday, but today it was some cooler. We are ready for cozy evenings, sweaters, and leaf peeping.

School always starts back with a bang, doesn't it? I'm sure your field trip was probably fun, but tiring. :) Romeo and Juliet is my favorite Shakespeare play. :) Have a great week, Lorrie!

    Hugs,

  30. Beautiful snippets of fall.... We are getting lots of color here now that the tamaracks are starting to turn, and while indeed we don't have the brilliance found in the oaks on the eastern coast, we still have some lovely things to see this time of year! Hope you recover from your long outing with the kids! Teaching is an exhausting thing to do! Hugs to you today :)
