November Celebrations

Two November birthdays. Two beautiful young women. A daughter and a daughter-in-love. We gathered on Sunday for a late brunch/lunch.

I was in the mood to try a few new recipes. I made a baked, filled omelette, loosely based on this recipe. Sauteed vegetables and cheese filled the omelette and we had breakfast sausages on the side, along with a fruit plate and...

a braided apple bread that was quite good. I would serve a cheese sauce to accompany the omelette next time.

Cake decorating is NOT my forte, unlike DIL Katie. I browsed Pinterest and came up with the idea of a cupcake bouquet. There were even a few late, late raspberries to pop onto the centers. I'm sure these will be the last.

Purchased macarons were a special treat. Tim took this photo from the other end of the table. Miss A is reading the macaron flavour key to Miss S. Notice the teacups? The girls asked if they could have tea, in their special cups, with sugar cubes. This Nana agreed with alacrity.

Grandpa suggested that the littles should have finger access to the piped green stems of icing on the cake plate. It didn't take long for that to disappear!

The dads got in on the play - one was a horse, the other helped to get everyone balanced. The ride was short, but fun while it lasted.

How often do you try new recipes? I feel like I've been in a bit of a rut, but all the time I spent in the kitchen this past weekend was a lot of fun.

  1. Your family celebration looks just delightful. Love your cupcake bouquet idea too. And the grandchildren having tea time with macarons, of course that was extra special.

  2. What a wonderful celebration, creating lots of lovely memories. I browse cookbooks for a celebration and try something new but my family love tradition and always ask for there firm favourites, tried and tested over the years.

  3. Looks like a lovely celebration Lorrie with great looking food.
I like to try out new recipes before bringing them out at an event so my girlfriends and I have made an arrangement to try one new recipe whenever it is our turn to provide the morning tea at one of our weekly meetings for Mahjong or Book Club. This way if there is a failure we have other cakes etc to fall back on and the new recipes are there, tried and tested, for all to use.

  5. What a delicious birthday feast - all the girls, big and small, look so happy - you really made it a great memory for all Lorrie.
The cupcake 'bouquet' is a good idea and so pretty.

I too have been in a bit of a cooking rut since getting back. Just going out shopping has been a chore to refill the freezer/fridge after losing all the food due to the hurricane and lengthy power outage. The still warm weather has also meant hours in the kitchen concocting winter pots of rib sticking foods not really happening. I did however go through my 'Winter Savories' folder yesterday and saw many old favorites waiting to be made - perhaps soon!

    Happy week my dear -

That looks like everyone is having so much fun and that is the most important thing. I love trying new recipes and there is nothing better than cooking, when I have the time! It's birthday week here too, one of our daughter's turned 12, and I have been making cakes like mad, for some bizarre reason she had a double feast, one with family and one with friends!

  11. The menu for the birthday celebrations looks delicious and that bouquet of cupcakes is a great idea. I have no doubts that the birthday girls felt very special indeed.
A grandpa who suggests finger access to the frosting and a dad who doubles as a horse leaves me feeling certain that the day was a roaring success for all who were lucky enough to be in attendance.

  13. Most interesting dishes you presented! I think the omlette sounds really great, the perfect lunch recipe.
Nice to see pics of the family...I like the way the girls drank decorously, like little ladies, from their special teacups but then had a riot afterwards...unlike the Victorians, children today are seen AND heard and so it should be!

  25. What beautiful birthday girls for a wonderful celebration, Lorrie. The grand girls are adorable, too. I'm loving your cupcake bouquet and I'd be licking the stems with the girls. How often do I try new recipe?? I'm always trying them out. Last night I made a Cowgirl Lasagna, which was quite good!

  26. Happy Birthday to both your girls! What a beautiful happy shot of them in the first photo. You are a GOOD grandma for putting all this together, and with new recipes too! The grandkids look like they quite enjoyed tea, macaroons and icing on fingers ;) so sweet! I used to love trying new recipes, but have kind of lost interest in that now. I don't have much opportunity as my husband makes our suppers, but occasionally I look for a new dessert on the weekend.
