Post card from the road 3

Today we crossed the Arctic Circle. I’m sitting at a gas station in Fort McPherson in the Northwest Territory. It’s a beautiful, warm sunshine-filled day. We filled up our gas tank and bought a few extra groceries just to have on hand. Services are few and far between here.

We left our camping trailer in Dawson City because the road, the Dempster Highway, is unpacked with some very rough sections. We are staying in hotels during this portion of the trip.

Now we are off to Inuvik where we will stay three nights. Thank you for all your comments!

  1. Even I haven't been to the Arctic! This trip sounds so awesome - I'm so happy you are obviously enjoying every moment. Thanks for the great pix too. I going to pull up a map so I can see exactly where these wonderful places are located.
    Stay safe and happy trails.

  6. Rather bleak, but I am surprised that it is warm, that a flower blooms, and that there are any hotels at all. Obviously, I know nothing about this place. Keep documenting and enjoying the adventure.

  7. It looks so beautiful and so unusual without trees.

  8. Fascinating! 8 countries have territories within the Arctic Circle, Canada being one of them. (Not to be confused with Antarctica, which is a continent).

I once crossed the Arctic Circle in Norway (Vesterålen) in February and we had the opportunity to see the Aurora Borealis for many days... it's gorgeous.
A wonderful journey for you to continue... many greetings from Viola.

The children are staying three weeks and then we go on a road trip in the North of the Netherlands in Frise. I hope I will be fit enough!

  20. What a great adventure! I just found Fort McPherson on the map. It makes sense to have left your camping trailer behind for that last stretch. We have talked about doing the drive beyond the Arctic Circle one day. Are you going all the way to Tuktoyaktuk?

  23. Lorrie - so thrilled for you that all continues to go well with your road trip. The Arctic Circle? Wow! Days will be LOOONNGG there! Speaking of long, the longest road trip I have ever taken was when we moved from Ohio to Montana. About 30 hours.
