Traditions Old and New

Oh the rain. It drums down on the skylight. There are great puddles on the streets and sheets of water spray when cars drive through them. Indoors, the dark skies have me turning on all the lights during the day. Candle light on the breakfast table adds a special glow. One little granddaughter was over this morning and watched the twirling trees and deer for a long while, her little head resting on her hands.

I've been thinking about traditions and have concluded that no matter how much we plan to do the same things each year, it's impossible. Children are a year older and so are the adults. People change. Circumstances change.

I love Christmas music and began playing it in mid-November. Then I had that ear infection. It's gone and I feel great, but my plugged ear continues. The doctor told me it could take 6 weeks or more before the pressure equalizes and I regain full hearing. Meanwhile, music is not enjoyable. Sounds reverberate in my head. Singing sounds odd. I cannot bear to listen to music in a church. So, this will be the Christmas without music. Sad, but it's just one of those things.

However, the little granddaughter I mentioned earlier loves to sing. While she colored stars today I heard her singing the chorus to "Angels We Have Heard On High" - the long drawn out "Gloria in Excelsis Deo" sung so sweetly, with perfect pitch. And my heart melted. A little gift of music.

Something new I'm doing this year is painting an Advent calendar along with Harriet de Winton on Youtube. Each morning there is a new little design to draw and paint with watercolour. Some of my squares are more successful than others, but it's a personal treat that I look forward to doing each day.

There are still plenty of traditions to enjoy in the days to come. Despite people never being quite the same from year to year, doing the same things builds connection, establishes values, and is lots of fun!

Wishing you unexpected gifts today.

What a great idea for those who have the gift of drawing and painting. I'm definitely not.
Too bad about your plugged ear. I hope it goes away soon so you can enjoy the Christmas carols. GM

  3. Oh what a lovely idea to paint an advent square each day. A very calming activity in the run up to Christmas. Hope your plugged ear improves soon, such a shame about the music but I’m sure the pure sound of your granddaughter’s voice was a balm for the soul. Love your pretty decorations. B x

  5. Oh, the Advent calendar painting is a wonderful idea, and your paintings are very pretty and festive. So sorry your ear is still so troublesome, especially at Christmas. But your sweet granddaughter singing the famous carol would be such a treat. The rain is the same here today: dark, wet, puddles everywhere and creeks rising over the streets. Hope it goes away soon :)

  6. New traditions you create today will one day be old traditions for that little Granddaughter! The traditions will be gifts she will treasure. A year or so ago I saved the Harriet de Winton website as a favourite but have not looked into it for quite some time. Now I wish I had after seeing the beautiful Advent calendar you are painting! Could this be a new tradition for you?

  7. It is amazing how the grandkids remember the traditions from year to year and are eager to do them. Love that Advent calendar! I hope you will be able to enjoy the music of the season again soon.

  8. What a lovely Advent calendar. I sympathise with your hearing loss. Lorrie. As one who has to wear hearing aids now, I know the challenges, particularly with music. I hope your hearing returns soon.

  9. I think your conclusion about traditions is spot on. I was having similar thoughts this morning. As much as I find comfort in Christmas traditions, I am learning to find joy despite circumstances changing.
That is a bummer that you are not able to enjoy music fully. Hope it won't be too much longer until your hearing is fully restored. Your granddaughter's singing sounds absolutely precious.
We have had a lot of cloudy, gloomy days here since returning from our trip. So thankful for Christmas lights and candles to help cheer things up.
Your decor looks so festive and pretty. Love the advent calendar idea. I'll have to pop over and check it out.

  10. Every photo is fantastic. Your home is looking beautiful and cozy and I love the idea of painting the advent calendar daily. Wish I'd started that! I'm sorry about your ear infection but mostly sorry that you haven't been able to enjoy the music you love. Well, I say listen in January. Or July. It's still beautiful at any time. Maybe no lights and candy canes, but still pretty good. Have a wonderful week, Lorrie.

  12. Oh, Lorrie, it was really sad to read you can't enjoy the Christmas music this year. Fortunately there are other important and lovely things one can do and enjoy. Thank you for telling about the watercolour painting channel. Your squares are all lovely. I hope to watch some of the videos at least after Christmas.
I would like to disagree on one thing. I feel in our family we have managed to do the same things each year in the same way. :) Perhaps we haven't matured or grown but for decades we have been celebrating Christmas in the same home doing the same things in the same time as year before. At least for me the magic is exactly the same.
I hope you will soon hear normally!

I will be praying that it heals quickly so that you can still enjoy it. I also love your old and new traditions. The Advent calendar painting is special and unique. Great idea!

  14. Sorry to read about the ear issues and the music connection. I had a weird ear thing with a bout of vertigo with it. That was unpleasant. Hope all is healed soon. It is so sweet to hear our Grands singing traditional hymns.

  15. Angels We Have Heard On High is one of my favourite Christmas songs.

I concur that traditions can evolve over time and it's fine to let go of traditions that don't serve you.

  16. What pretty decorations you have! The one in the first picture is almost magical; an enchanted mini-forest that makes me think about gingerbread 🤎

How fortunate that you're going to get you hearing back. It must be frustrating though. Hang in there!

The gift of music... simply wonderful 🎼

  17. You have wise words. I think the biggest change for me was when I divorced. Every thing changed.
I've had to give up on things, and reinvent them. The grandkids are so busy in both Vancouver and Ottawa, that things have to change up.

  18. It’s so true that traditions shift over time, as people and circumstances evolve. Your reflection on how this year’s Christmas will be without music is touching. It must feel strange, but I hope the quiet moments bring their own kind of peace. Wishing you a joyful and peaceful holiday season, even without the music you love. I invite you to read my latest blog post: https://www.melodyjacob.com/2024/12/one-blogging-mistake-that-is-reducing-your-traffic-and-how-to-fix-it-now.html

  19. I also have a wood Christmas mill coming from Germany. I love your Xmas lights it looks very nice. The problem with your ear seems to be serious I hope you’ll feel better soon. I am also not well, caught a virus and won’t be well for Christmas for the fourth or fifth year I have Covid each year for Christmas! ( fully vaccinated) so disappointing!

What a fun painting project. On a normal year I would love doing that advent celebration. This is not a normal year for me, but maybe next year I can explore that idea. If I were a little girl, I would love watch the candles make the decoration spin around and sing songs of Christmas. Hoping your ear heals quickly.

  21. Your granddaughter’s sweet singing is such a reminder that music still finds its way to our hearts, even when we can’t enjoy it the usual way. I love the idea of painting an Advent calendar — it sounds like a perfect way to embrace the season. Wishing you lots of little gifts and joy this Christmas!

  22. Lovely to keep seasonal traditions and add new ones as things inevitably change through generations. The advent calendar is a great idea and looks enjoyable to do:)

  23. Christmas without music - that would be odd now I think about it. I like the advent calendar idea; I guess you could do haikus too. Our plans are all awry given my hospital stay in France. But I’m just so pleased to be back in the UK as without family would not be Christmas at all.

  24. Dear Lorrie, I am blown away by your beautiful Advent calendar... what a great participation campaign. If you do it again (2025)... remember, I would like to take part, even though I haven't painted for years.
    Thanks for the link.
I have sewn a lot for this celebration, small and large... the pyramid is up and running, the Christmas tree will be lit up in the afternoon, all the presents are wrapped... I will put the potato salad together right away.
Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.
Viola sends you a big hug
