The Year's First Picnic

Friday morning's sunshine beguiled Tim into calling from work suggesting a picnic at the beach for dinner. By early afternoon the rain poured down and I thought soup and a cozy fire would be more appropriate than picnic fare. However, spring's moods change quickly and 5 pm found me packing up the small cooler.

The beach was lovely - no wind, waves lapping at the shore, few people. Chilly, yes, but we had bundled up well for this, the year's first picnic. I hope it's a wonderful harbinger of things to come.

I've not yet encountered the camping dishes in my unpacking but I did find a couple of stray paper plates. Caesar Chicken Salad and a Cucumber salad were on the menu, so pretty with the slanting shadows.

This morning, after church, we celebrated Tim's birthday with a brunch. On the menu were Judy's Faux French Fries - as an April Fool's joke. For the cake I used another of Judy's recipes from the Mennonite Girls Can Cook blog - Plum Upside Down Cake. I neglected to take a photo of the cake and now there's very little of it left. Delicious!

We spent a very mellow afternoon chatting in the living room. When the Little Miss awoke from her nap, she wanted to play piano. Together we pick out "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" followed by a free form rendition of her own creation.

Joining the party at the Little Red House for Mosaic Monday, hosted by Mary, and Sunlit Sunday.

  4. A picnic must have been the perfect start to the weekend. Wasn't it a strange one? Sun and rain, in equal measure.
Your Sunday looks to have been a peaceful day.

  5. Cute french fries! I'd call that a gutsy picnic with the weather so changeable, but I bet it was refreshing and a wonderful start to the weekend! Love your piano picture! Looks like a Sunday afternoon to me!

  7. There is no way that I would be out there enjoying a picnic in the cold. However, I LOVE that you and Tim do it. You are just the two to grab the moment and run with it. I also enjoyed seeing the photo of you and the Little Miss at the piano.

  10. Your trip to Mexico is a fabulous experience. Thanks for sharing! Most people don't think about how others live. You've made a huge difference in the life of Mele and that's a wonderful thing. All any of us really needs is a small, comfortable space to call home sweet home.

Those faux french fries are fantastic! Very cute idea. Wishing you a wonderful week. And your first picnic surely won't be your last. Enjoy the warming weather. Best wishes, Tammy

  12. The first picnic of the year is always special.
This last week, we've been lucky enough to have beautiful weather and have eaten most of our meals alfresco. Love that!

  13. Your picnic looks wonderful...but I'm shivering just thinking about eating out there. Spring will be most welcome when it arrives!

You can't start them on the piano too young! I see you are even teaching her the fingering.

I served the faux fries to some friends last week...and they were a little disappointed to find sweets when they were expecting fries. :)

  24. Very patient and generous of you to introduce your little girl to the piano. I've been trying to distract Nola from noticing ours, quite honestly, because of what it will mean forever after (and I taught piano for many, many years, so bad Nana!)

  25. What a lovely picnic. Starting the piano early I see.
Have not had a picnic but had our first lunch in garden this week as it has been in the 70's. Dropping to 41 tomorrow though so that's it for a while I guess.
