Five on Friday: The Flower Edition

Over the past couple of weeks I've managed to crochet some cotton flower coasters. There will be more of these in the future as they are quick to make and full of colour. The pattern is free, from Coats and Clark. I used a variegated cotton yarn. With the summer-like weather we're enjoying, sitting outdoors on the patio with a cool drink is in the near future.

Flowers number two are not quite blooming, but just look at those fat peony buds getting ready to burst into ruffled beauties.

A few native cornflowers are in bloom. These reseed themselves throughout my garden in the summer, but they are well behaved and don't make a nuisance of themselves. This one settled in the midst of a silvery grass growing in a dry corner.

The no-name rosebush in the front garden is loaded with blooms. There will definitely be dead-heading in my weekend plans. This rose has a sweet, hint-of-apple scent that is most pleasant.

And for the last flower - a raspberry bloom being pollinated by a very busy bee. The whole row of raspberry canes was a-buzz with bees - such a welcome sight.

Flowers of all kinds are in bloom just now, many of them more than a month early. What kind of summer is ahead?

The fires in Fort McMurray are of real concern. We are all so thankful that no lives have been lost in this huge evacuation. We have family in Alberta and Tim's nephew left the Fort just the day before the evacuation. Pam of Playing with my Camera has an informative post on the fires. We continue to pray for the situation.

  2. The coasters are pretty. Thanks for the link that shows how to make them. I might have a go at that. I've noticed the peonies in our garden are just ready to burst out from their tight buds. The scenes of the fires and the devastation to homes and land on the tv news is distressing. Thinking of you and your family.

  4. It's always fascinating to see what other people have in their gardens, and you are well ahead of us. My roses are just beginning to show buds. Yours is such a lovely colour.

  5. Our peonies are at just about the same stage as yours but I haven't seen any of the perennial cornflowers yet. The fires look awful and we've seen reports on the news here it must be so upsetting for all concerned:)

  6. I hadn't heard about the fires, so I have just been on the news channel. My heart goes out to all those people, they are certainly in my prayers. As always beautiful photos, you have such a wonderful garden it is always a delight to see.

  7. Lots of beauty and promise in your garden these days. I am always happy to see the bees as well. Oh those horrid fires in Alberta. I was very relieved to learn yesterday that my Alberta cousins are okay, but so many are affected. Glad to learn that your family is okay, too. Praying for rains to come and put that thing out.

  9. Your garden photos always serve as a nice--and pretty--preview of what is to bloom here, soon. Your plants are several weeks ahead of ours. The peonies will be ready for Memorial Day, May 30, a day the graves of military are decorated with flowers, along with any others that visitors want to honor with flowers. Love the coasters, too. I will look up the pattern. Enjoy your weekend.

  12. Lovely shots, Lorrie, esp. the color of that cornflower! I would love a dress that shade!
Your coasters are darling & will come in handy.
You've reminded me to get outside & get the wire cages around my peonies before they get too big!!! Spring has FINALLY arrived here in Ohio!

Prayers for all those affected by the awful fires....so sad.

  13. Nice coasters. I love crocheting with cotton. Your flowers look promising. I too wonder what the summer holds. It'll be close to 90 for the next week where we live. Way too early to be so hot.

  15. We are praying for the Fort Mac residents also. Our son spent many months working there also.
Lorrie, your flowers are so...far ahead of ours. My peonies are not even peeking out of the soil yet.
The coaster are sure cute. I love anything with scallops! Is this the yarn you were gifted with?
    Have a Happy Mother's Day!

I see your peonies are at the same stage as mine. I like the colors of your flower coasters. Wildfires are always so scary. The magnitude of this one is crazy. The photos on the news have been so sad. Praying the fire gets contained. Hope you have a wonderful weekend and a Happy Mother's day!

  23. I love the colours you've used in the crochet and the photos of nature. We've seen the Wildfires on the news in the UK. So pleased to hear that nobody has been hurt.

  24. What a pretty "five" this week! I love your colorful coasters. As one who does not crochet, I am amazed that you have made so many in such a short time.

Praying for those in the areas of the wildfires!

  25. Love your crochet and garden blooms...have been reading about the fire on the Net each morning and it's just awful. The way the evacuations have been handled....convoys, refueling stations, helicopters watching ahead, etc sounds very well organized.

It is hard to imagine an entire city wiped out, fleeing for your lives in a mass exodus, and each day the fire is worse.

  26. You have such beautiful flowers. I enjoyed looking at the pictures of them.

  32. Your coasters are lovely, I've never seen ones like them before. Beautiful things growing all around you! Such a sad sad thing, the horrible fire, unbelievable how something like that can happen.

  33. Thanks for the mention of my blog in regard to the Fort McMurray fires, Lorrie. I am so thankful that the fire has 'moved on' but that doesn't mean it can't happen again. It will be such a long road back for those who had to flee and leave everything behind. I can't imagine.
