Five on Friday

As soon as possible in the spring/summer, I cease wearing socks. I go barefoot in the house and slip into my shoes when going out. I think this habit is leftover from my years in the jungle when I barely owned socks.

Barefoot season came early this year, but it seems to be retracting a little. Wind blew a bit of welcome rain and less welcome cooler temperatures over night. The garden is delighted.

I'm terrible at remembering the names of my plants. I know this rose is a floribunda, but have no recollection of the name. Still, "what's in a name?"

I do remember the name of the rosebud in the top photo and this open one - Secret. It's very fragrant and blooms throughout the summer.

A raindrop clings to a stalk of lavender about to burst into bloom. I think it's my potting bench in the reflection.

This evening I picked about a pint of strawberries. So early. So sweet and delicious.

Five things from my garden for this week. I'm looking forward to a long weekend with Monday off. There are weeds to pull, pots to plant and radishes and beets to thin. Other than that I'm looking forward to puttering and relaxing. What do you have planned?

  1. Stunning captures, Lorrie, especially the raindrop reflection on the lavender. The roses are all so beautiful and I can't believe you're picking strawberries so early in the season! Bon weekend.

  2. You are certainly developing your photography skills! The images are lovely. I am also one who likes to be barefoot on these warm days.

  5. Roses and strawberries - what an enjoyable combination. Beautiful photos. It sounds like a good weekend ahead with what you've got planned especially with that extra day.

  6. No socks here either! Your photos are amazing, especially the raindrop. I think you should be sending them off to magazines for publication.
You are so far ahead of us in the garden, but I guess you do have a shorter season. My Zephirine has just produced the first flower, such a lovely scent.

  8. My sox are back on here too. What a delightfully cool week we're enjoying with lots of rain. Loved that lavender photo with its reflecting raindrop. No outside work this weekend with the rain, but I need to attend to things inside.

  9. Five BEAUTIFUL images you have shared today, Lorrie. I was thinking how gorgeous your header is and then it just got better and better as I scrolled down. The raindrop photo is amazing.
I am with you on the bare feet. We had a coolish day yesterday and I put on socks to go out. It felt strange.
    Enjoy your weekend.

  10. My father was a rosarian and would possibly have known each name of your lovely roses. Hurrah, you have a long weekend in the garden planned! How satisfying that will be!

My husband will be doing the same things as you, only in our daughter and son-in-law's gardens. He has turned into their gardener, it seems, in his retirement days here in Florida. I foresee hours in the kitchen for me, with time out for a good book.

Not a bad weekend plan. Enjoy yours!

  11. Lovely!

I am a barefoot girl too, due to my years growing up in So. California. Its been a chilly spring here, with lots of rain, but in the house I am still barefoot!

    Your garden is delightful!

  12. Just getting ready to type the words, "I'm a barefoot girl too"...and then I look above my comment and my friend Deanna has said the same thing!! (Kindreds!) The funny thing about my barefootedness is that my mom always wore shoes (heels!) around the house...and still does! I think she sometimes wonders where she went wrong. ;)

Beautiful photos, as always! I am particularly taken with the droplet on the lavender. Beautiful!

  14. Oh Lorrie, your photos took my breath away! The roses are just divine and those strawberries have my mouth watering! Thank you for sharing such loveliness with us.

I wanted to let you know that your delightful package arrived yesterday and I LOVE everything! I look forward to sharing it on my blog when I return from my break. Bless you, dear one! Hugs!

  16. Socks here but no strawberries yet . Fabulous photos.

  17. I planted cucumbers and tomatoes in the raised bed...not sure how well they'll do with the lack of sun, but I refuse to give up. Tomorrow, I hope to plant my little herb garden that will live in a railing planter outside my door. Nice and handy I hope.

Your roses are beautiful no matter the name. I can tell you've been hanging out with Shakespeare this year. Whatever you get up to this holiday weekend, I know that you'll enjoy it. Hope that there's a picnic or BBQ in there somewhere!

  18. Pretty new header! I'm terrible at flower recognition and names. Today was a quiet day at home with some crochet involved and tomorrow I will attend a weaving workshop. Enjoy your long weekend.

  19. Lorri, your photography is beautiful. You have a wonderful natural eye! I've scrolled up and down several times to take it all in.

I'm also a barefooter. In the winter I'll pad around in comfy, heavy wool socks but put shoes on ever? Not if I can help it.

  20. Wonderful photos of what is happening in your garden! The water droplet on the lavender is incredible! I think you should give your unnamed rose a name and call it Lorrie.. Thank you for taking part in Five On Friday, I hope you have a good weekend!

  26. Such beautiful roses! I put Knock Out Roses in my garden this year but had to wrap them in chicken wire so the deer don't eat them before they set roots. I hope they will survive--I love their color. My socks are on till I find time for a pedicure--I've been babysitting quite a bit these days ;)

  28. Eating your own strawberries already, you are much more advanced than we are. the strawberries from the growers are in the markets brought up from the south of France. Your photos are fabulous, the roses are beautiful but my favourite is the rain drop on the lavender with the reflection in it. Your new lens is giving you great results.

  29. Your photos are fabulous, Lorrie! My foot issues require me to wear orthotics so I rarely go barefoot at home.

  30. Lovely, lovely! And I love your new header! Such beauties upon which to feast the eyes.

Socks basically stay in the drawer over the spring and summer. A friend and I went and got our toes painted so we are definitely ready for sandals.

And, I am only imagining the sweetness of your very own strawberries. Are you having a Strawberry Tea to celebrate May's Victoria Day? I was thinking about strawberry shortcake. Your pic inspires me to go ahead, even if I don't have my own sweet supply.

Wishing you a beautiful weekend, Lori!

  33. What a feast for the eyes Lorrie. The roses are truly stunning and the lavender, WOW! I love the barefoot days - it drives my hubby mad, but I love to feel the grass under my feet (and the occasional wasp! - Ouch!!). Have a lovely Sunday xx

  36. How lovely. Roses, Lavender and strawberries, three of my favourite things. I too go barefoot in sandals or light weight shoes as soon as I can ditch the boots and socks of winter:)

  40. Good Morning Lorrie, well because I'm typing this after the weekend, I'll have to tell you what I did. The two biggest things were, we cut down and dead tree in the back corner of our property. It was a large pine-tree about fifty feet tall that died this spring. Our neighbors shoot off fireworks on the 4th of July so our goal was to have it down before then. I can not imagine having it catch on fire. The other thing I did was start the process of checking something off my bucket list. I purchased a kayak . . . I'm 70 years young and decided that I had better do it now or never :)
Your roses are beautiful, I especially love the one you called "secret". I'm going to have to keep my eyes out for that one, I can always use another rose :)
    Have a lovely week.
    Your blogging sister,
    Connie :)

  41. Oh Lorrie your pictures are lovely. The roses are just beautiful and I wish I could reach in and try one of those Strawberries, we don't have any ripe over here yet but hopefully they will be ready in the next couple of weeks. I hope you had a great weekend xx

  43. A rose is a rose...so many names to remember if one really wanted to, I'd rather just enjoy their beauty and fragrance. :-)
I have tried many times for a good raindrop reflection and you discovered a wonderful one on your lavender - I'm envious.
Hope you had a nice Victoria Day weekend!

  45. I would love to go barefoot the way I did all summer as a child... foot problems prevent me from doing that very much, but just reading about your summer habits and that of so many commenters makes me think I should try it on my soft paths.. at least try a little...? It makes me happy, anyway, to think of all of the people enjoying that freedom of summertime!
