Five on Friday: Delights of the Week

This week we've had WEATHER. Lots of it. Snow, wind, more snow, freezing rain, sunshine, wind, and more rain. Two no-school snow days.

1. I'm still delighting in the snow, although many people are getting thoroughly sick of it all. I admired the way the snow caught on one of the metal porch chairs, so delicately caught in the swirls and curlicues.

Our patio and back yard. It's been a long time since we've seen this much snow all at once.

The row of pots awaiting spring, each pot topped with fluffy snow meringue.

2. And then the sun came out. Blue sky. White snow, dark trees. Perfectly elegant.

3. The grandkids came over to play in our sloping back yard. Whee! Down they went.

Then trudge, trudge, back up again. They stayed for lunch, eaten in the living room because that's where the sun was shining in.

4. A snowy Valentine, caught in a tree. Love to you, it says.

5. Tim was up Island today at meetings, so I was on my own for dinner. Some sauteed vegetables, a bit of turkey sausage and cheese folded into an omelette and topped with chopped cilantro and green onion hit the spot, along with a little leftover coleslaw. What do you eat if you're on your own?

I watched a Father Brown mystery while I ate, and as the episode opened, I thought, "I know that place!" And I did - it was Sudeley Castle where we visited last summer. Such a beautiful place, where stories from the past lurk around every corner. How fun was that!

Weekend plans include celebrating a 3-year-old's birthday, baking Valentine's cookies, some house fluffing, and a Monday off for BC's Family Day long weekend.

  1. When Mr. HB is away for work I usually eat very light...leftovers if there are some in the fridge or an easy cheesy omelette.
The melting has commenced and I will miss the white fluff but do not miss the treacherous road conditions.

  2. Your snowy garden looks like a Christmas card, what a great winter playground for your Grandchildren to enjoy too. Since the SP retired it's quite rare for me to eat dinner alone but back in the days when he had to travel an omelette made from whatever bits and bobs were in the fridge was always a favourite for me.
    Bon weekend.

  3. Winter is so beautiful on photos and really a fun fid kids. I'm always trying to remember of my childhood delights, when winter is a worrie for me today.
Have a great and not to busy weekend

  4. It makes lovely photos and the kids love it, but here in the UK snow causes chaos because we're just not used to it. Thankfully we haven't had any this year. My Aunt lives on your Island, I must text her and see how she's coping with it. Have a lovely weekend.

  5. I am SO envious Lorrie. We have a possibility of snow flurries tonight but I'm not holding my breath. What fun you and your grandkids must have had. Your photos are beautiful. Have a great weeken. B x

  6. Oh lucky you, we are wishing for snow here, it's been a few years now since the children could go sledging. Enjoy the long weekend

  7. I love the way the snow has got caught in your fence. Great for the children to be able to play in the snow with their sledges. Have fun.

  8. Anything salad-y is my favourite when I'm on my own....which isn't often. But just lately I have been out for lunch with friends while my husband languished with hospital food!
Your snow is amazing. I remember some years ago we had similar snow in England which was a huge surprise.

  10. The snow in your fence and I'm the pots is so pretty. Isn't it fun to watch the grandkids sledding! Your evening alone sounds like mine. I love mysteries. And I've been to Sudeley Castle too. Isn't it Catherine Parr buried in the chapel there (am I remembering right?) Have a nice weekend celebrating that birthday.

  11. That is definitely weather! I'm glad that we've escaped any of that snow stuff so far this winter. I hope it stays that way - I don't care how pretty it looks.

  12. Your evening on your own sounds similar to mine. I like cooking something good but easy. Your pictures speak of the joy of snow and the art in a snowfall. Lovely! Enjoy your extra weekend day off.

  13. Your snowy photos are beautiful, as are your adorable grands, Lorrie! My yard looks the same but I'm too much of a wimp to venture out with a camera...brrrr...too cold!

I often eat eggs with mushrooms, green onions & peppers for my evening meal, now that I'm alone for every evening. Easy & Healthy...Yum!

  14. Playing in the snow looks like great fun for your grand children and the snow looks so pretty on the fences and pots. The forecast is for snow tomorrow but I daressay it won't be anywhere near as much as you have at the moment. I just graze if I'm on my own, a bit of pasta in tomato sauce, a bowl of soup perhaps or something on toast:)

  15. Flowers are wonderful, but snow has a beauty all its own. I especially enjoyed your comments and the healthful, colorful plate - a reminder for me to eat more veggies.

  16. Your photos look very familiar. I appreciate how we can enjoy snow in a shorter time frame than many in harsher climates. It's great to watch the British shows and recognize places. Love Father Brown. Hope you have a great weekend.

  18. The snow is gorgeous. THe littles look like they had a wonderful time. I eat very much like you do when I am alone, your dinner sounds delicious.

  19. You sure are getting more than a dusting this time around Lorrie - still looking pretty though. Later when it gets muddy and mucky
it becomes a nuisance! Hope it will warm up quickly and a lot will melt naturally so you don't have to shovel.

    Happy 'white weekend' - Mary

  20. The snow looks so pretty. We watch Father Brown as well, good series. That is my kind of omelette, yummy.

  21. You got some beautiful snow shots! Very artistic. Me, when I am alone... I eat anything that's left over in the fridge. I'm not picky.

  22. Those are photos that you can't postpone catching! Your winter days sound perfect.

I am almost always alone eating nowadays, but I rarely take the trouble to make a nice plate such as yours pictured. I do eat a lot of eggs, though, and salads from bags, and frozen spinach. I make big batches of things sometimes, and then eat leftovers in different combinations. Eggs are such a convenient food that way, aren't they?

  23. Looks like a fun day all around! Your supper looks yummy. I was thinking of having some cookies and milk for supper. 😉

  24. Love the look of your omelette!

So nice to see the photo's of your grand-kids playing in the snow.
We had a few snowflakes fall yesterday and today, but alas no snowman building possible ... which our grandchildren would love to do!

    Happy Weekend Wishes

    All the best Jan

  26. Snow is always so pretty in pictures, but I don't much like it in real life. We've visited Sudeley Castle too, I'll have to look for that Father Brown,.

  27. Snow days are so wonderful - you've captured some lovely scenes! The little ones are so sweet, all bundled up in their heavy clothes and having fun in the snow. Your omelette looks delicious and the perfect thing for a solo dinner. Such a thrill to see a place you have traveled to, on the television. Our snow is gone and so is the magic. Enjoy your weekend! x Karen

  28. Lucky you to have two snow days! The snow looks nice and fluffy. My friend moved up to Thunder Bay last year and and is experiencing her first T-Bay winter...apparently, there's no such thing as a "snow day" in T-Bay. Enjoy your long weekend! Our Family Day falls on Feb 20th.

Love your snow pictures. We usually have so much snow here just south of the Quebec border, we put away our deck furniture so it was fun to see the snow puffs on yours.
The last time my husband was gone I used my new hand-held spiralizer in a sweet potato and boiled the strands for a few minute. A little butter, cracked pepper and grated Parm. I loved it!
We are expecting 8"-12" Sunday to Monday so I suspect another no-school day will be in our future. That will bring our last student day to June 16.
Love Father Brown. We have British Comedy night on Saturdays on our local public station. Right now the rotation is Father Brown, As Time Goes By, Keeping Up Appearances, Miranda, and Moone Boy. Occasionally The Vicar of Dibley, Mulberry, The Detectorists, and Vicious enter the cycle. I just love Brit Com Saturday!
First time I visited your blog. Will add it to my list. : ) Carol

Good Morning! Wow, the snow is so pretty and the grands are so cute enjoying the slope of your yard. Love your description of meringue on the flower pots! I love the Father Brown mysteries, also. Many times when I am left to myself for a meal, I enjoy an omelette or cereal with fruit. Wishing you a delightful weekend.

  31. What a lovely post, Lorrie! It is very surprising to see so much snow in your photos. It looks beautiful and the grandchildren must have loved it.
We too watch Father Brown, great actors and always marvellous surroundings. I know most of the series mentioned by Carol above. They are very much liked also in Finland.
    Have a great weekend!

  32. Hello,Lorrie,
What a sweet post! You had lot's of snow and it must be fun for kids in your place. Those photos of your grands playing the snow make me smile. Lovely!!They are adorable. Happy weekend to you and your family.

  33. Beautiful photos. What I eat alone depends on the left overs in the refrigerator but I do always prepare something and sit to eat it. I think so many people short themselves on meal time if they are alone. That would be a good thing to have more discussion about wouldn't it? Your omelet looks great. I'm not familiar with the mystery show you mentioned.

  34. Such beautiful fluffy snow pic's (and your grands enjoying it)! Your 'alone meal' looks like something I would make if I am on my own. An omelette with salsa is a favorite of mine.

  38. Always a delight to visit your five on Friday! You did get a lot of snow, so pretty and fluffy it was! It is so magnificent when the sun comes out and the trees still have snow on them with blue skies, exhilarating! Such fun with the grandkids sledding! And home alone, leftovers are my go-to, or if none, then a sandwich. Your omelette looked just perfect!
