My writing desk in a corner of the dining room. Photo taken a day before this writing. |
My current writing project has me waking early some days, and as thoughts and words begin to flow, I pull myself from my warm bed, add a cozy robe, and go down in the darkness to this corner. A pot of tea is made, and a rice bag heated in the microwave, for it is indeed chilly. After an hour or so, I hear my husband stirring and I return upstairs to ready myself for the day.
Last night we had neighbours over for coffee and dessert. The guys drank coffee from mugs, we ladies enjoyed tea in china teacups. All of us ate a piece of Cream and Apple Pie, adapted from a recipe by Patricia Wells from her cookbook Bistro Cooking. As we stand on the porch to say our goodbyes, the cold rainy air washes over us and we are glad to return to the warmth of the fire.
These rainy days are interspersed with occasional sunny ones, and how wonderful it is to see the blue through golden oak leaves. Soon they will all disappear and the spare architecture of branches will stand stark against the sky.
I've been eating vegetables as part of my breakfast. I actually enjoy vegetables more than fruit. Thinly sliced and oven-roasted sweet potatoes topped with a scrambled egg and accompanied with crunchy cucumbers make a satisfying breakfast.
You have a sweet writing corner. 🖊
ReplyDeleteNice chair! The blue of the sky seen through the tree leaves is a lovely view!
ReplyDeleteOooh, the sweet potato and egg combo sounds like a great breakfast to me, too!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely spot to write in. I can imagine you in the early morning. Lovely looking cake. B x

ReplyDeleteHi Lorrie~ That last comment posted before I could finish! Gorgeous post. I really love your poetic way of telling your story. The view from your writing table sounds really beautiful, and I love the tea cups. Friends, a tasty dessert and tea is a perfect way to spend and evening. Hugs, Barb
ReplyDeleteI enjoy reading your posts because you have a wonderful way with words. I think you writing corner looks serene and inspiring. Your breakfast also looks inspiring and since today's supper here involves roasting sweet potatoes I'll roast an extra one and try having it for breakfast. The air fryer should reheat it very nicely in the morning.
ReplyDeleteHi Lorrie,
ReplyDeleteYou do indeed have a nice spot in which to write. It sounds like your weather has already gotten colder than ours. It may sound crazy, but I like your kind of weather this time of the year; it's so cozy to stay near the fire or heater, with a good book and hot tea. For some reason, our temps. are back into the 70's F, so it's hard to know how to dress. I love the pictures of the gold leaves against the blue-sky background. That's exactly how our sky looked today when we drove to the mountains. I love a good, scrambled egg, but I had never thought of serving with sweet potato. That certainly sounds healthy.
Hope you have a good weekend, Lorrie!!
Hugs,
Denise
Love the various settings in this post! I can imagine you in all of them.
ReplyDeleteYour desk window corner is beautiful! A very lovely space.
ReplyDeleteI am excited to try sweet potato and eggs!
Lorrie, I love seeing where you write! It's so important to have a window near and yours reminds me of the permanent picture on my blog of Faith Baldwin's writing desk by a large window. I'm very glad you give your early morning thoughts to your writing because they are bound to be your best then. I have to admit that I would not want you to see my desk right now but your orderly one inspires me to make time to straighten up my own. I also love eating veggies for breakfast and your combination looks delicious.
ReplyDeleteYes, I can't wait to start bringing Christmas into the house! Only thing stopping me now is waiting until some back pain improves after some PT visits but my heart is already there. Your garden shop trip sounds delightful!
I do like your writing desk! My attention was caught by two food mentions - cream and apple pie, and sweet potato with your breakfast. Both sound delicious.
ReplyDeleteYour breakfast looks very yummy and so does the pie. I am thinking about how much I'll decorate and when. I'm really in the mood now!
ReplyDeleteBreakfast does look good.
ReplyDeleteIt will not be long before the Christmas decorations go up.
All the best Jan
When I called my mom the other morning, she was having split pea soup for breakfast. She just eats whatever she has on hand, whenever, never worrying about the time of day or what is considered "traditional" meal fare. I just had some roasted sweet potato -- like to have the leftovers with a sprinkle of coconut sugar, cinnamon and crushed walnuts. Our nephew was just here from Canada for 10 days and unfortunately, he did not really see a whole lot of blue sky. The weather is changing and has been back and forth -- hazy, humid, cloudy, dusty. Today there's clouds but none of the predicted rain. Your writing spot is very cozy. Have a peaceful day.
ReplyDeleteHello Lorrie, your writing corner is beautiful and full of light! The photo of your china teaware and pie is simply perfect. Vegetables are better (than fruit) for our health and at least in our family we should eat them more. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's only about one and a half months to Christmas and I'm gradually adding red colour and wintry decorations into our home. The first snow fell here last night and hasn't melted away yet.
Have a blessed Sunday!
What a lovely space/corner to write...and the breakfast looks really good :)
ReplyDeleteHave a happy Sunday & take care!

Love your writing corner, Lorrie.
ReplyDeleteYour breakfast look so delish!
Hugs and blessings 💐
I write from my dining room also Lorrie - the table has become my desk of sorts. The light is good - faces south - and the front porch and garden always has something of interest going on be it a bird, gecko or squirrel visiting!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on veggies for breakfast and this one looks so tasty.
BTW, my neighbor and his lady friend enjoyed their trip to Vancouver Island so much - Tofino and Victoria, Butchart Gdns. etc. they loved it all, and then a couple of days in Vancouver city. The weather was quite good for them and they weren't bothered by any fires!
Hope your week ahead is great dear friend.
Oh, I love your writing corner! It is so pretty and you have a lovely view . . . inspiring! I'm sure that yummy pie and hot beverages shared with friends was a treat for all. I am thinking about Christmas, but not at all ready to decorate yet. I generally wait until after Thanksgiving and it is supposed to be 79 degrees here today which does not inspire winter thoughts!
ReplyDeleteOur weather here in Mid Wales seems to have been so wet & windy lately, I'm in desperate need of some sunny days.
ReplyDeleteCan I come and live with you? Please?
ReplyDeleteI love your peaceful existence and the cosiness of it all. But I would have to stay in bed a little later than you, my best ideas come late at night.
I'm also admiring your writing desk with a view, as well as the pretty china teapot.
ReplyDeleteI took down my Halloween decorations last weekend and will be putting up my festive decor soon...
Beautiful. I wonder if I'd do more work if I had such a pretty writing desk in a corner or I'd be constantly tempted by the views from outside?

Your pie looks and sounds delicious with a cup of tea. How nice to be doing some writing early in the morning. Since I am much more of a fruit person I had never thought to have vegetables for breakfast. I did come across a squash pancake recipe today that I am thinking might be fun to try for breakfast soon. Enjoy your veggie breakfast.
ReplyDeleteYour breakfast looks really delicious. I should be a little more adventuresome; I have the same bowl of cereal every morning and have done for years. It's only when I go away that I have a cooked breakfast.
