October Favourites

Lake Huron, late September

Listen! the wind is rising, and the air is filled with leaves
We have had our summer evenings,
now for October eves.

The wind is indeed rising today and cooler, wetter, windier weather is in the forecast. I love it. Every season has its delights and I thought I'd share some of my October favourites.

A List: October Favourites,
in no particular order

1. apples - good in cake, pies, crisps, and salads
2. layering up with sweaters
3. the sound of rain on the roof at bedtime
4. lighting a candle for the table
5. scuffling through crunchy leaves
6. sunshine on the water
7. the glow of light through autumn leaves
8. walking with my husband
9. dried hydrangea blossoms
10. reading in a pool of lamplight
11. homemade soup
12. a cozy throw or shawl
13. cups of tea in bone china mugs
14. tending my houseplants
15. leaves swirling in the wind

And one more thing to share. I walked with a friend this morning and rounding a corner on the path, we saw a flurry of feathers as a startled Barred Owl flew a short distance from us. Unafraid he watched us, occasionally tilting his head, just as we watched him and told him how lovely he was. What a special thing to see in my favourite month!

  1. Lovely pictures, Lorrie, but my favorite is the owl. I have never come across one while walking like that but we used to have them in the barn(s) on the farm when I was a kid. Amazing, aren't they? Happy October-xo Diana

I like all your Autumn favourites including the gorgeous Barred Owl.
We've been enjoying even more apples than usual because Gleaners had more than 500 lbs donated that went to the volunteers who were encouraged to "take more" lest they go to waste.

  14. We share the same month as our favorite, Lorrie. I love October as well, but here November is usually pretty stunning as well. This year everything is about two weeks later than "normal" because of the long and wet winter. Your October list sounds wonderful!

  15. Your first photo is so beautiful it hurts! Autumn is my favourite season, and particularly in Canada. I could return again and again to experience it. Your list sums it all up perfectly. Love the owl too!

  16. Nice owl photo, the foliage there is gorgeous as well. Love your list. A candle on the table sets very Octobery mood. I like that idea. Time to sort the candle drawer.

  17. I think October is almost anyone's favorite month, especially as its weather co-operates with our desire to walk and enjoy Nature in all its splendor. The indoor activities, at least in my case, are more or less constant throughout the year.
The picture of the owl is mind-blowing!

  22. I love your list! Hard to imagine that there are places in the world where these things would not be so. We have so much to be thankful for and often it's small things, layer upon layer.
