A Ferry Ride

There is no bridge between Vancouver Island and the rest of Canada. Instead, we rely on BC Ferries. A fleet of variously sized boats, ply the coastal waters, connecting islands big and small.
There are those who long for a land link and find the 90-minute crossing tiresome. Not me.

I enjoy traveling on the ferry. There is nothing I have to do: it's a time to read a book, eat a relaxing meal, sip tea, or admire the passing scenery.

Hundreds of islands and islets of all sizes dot the Salish Sea. Collectively known as the Gulf Islands, some are inhabited and others are parks. Here a bit of lingering snow lies on the shaded slope.

Standing on the back of the ferry the sharp wind whipped my hair (and the flag) and chilled me to the bone. I didn't stay on deck long, but wanted to enjoy the crisp (very) air and gorgeous sunshine for a few minutes.

Tomorrow, February 15, marks 60 years since we adopted our beautiful red and white maple leaf flag. Prior to 1965 Canada flew the Union Jack, the national flag of the UK. I love my country and think our flag a beautiful sight.

We wind our way through the islands, passing Portland Island where we take our own boat and go hiking. Salt Spring and Prevost Island lie to port and Pender to starboard. We round the corner into Active Pass, so named for the USCS Active, which was, in 1855, the first steamer to navigate the passage separating Galiano and Mayne Islands.

Houses of all sizes dot the shoreline, all having one thing in common - a deck or patio overlooking the water. Who wouldn't want to have views like this? Today, on our return home on the ferry, a large flock of Common Terns floated on the water, lifting off in a cloud of white when the ship's horn blew a long blast to warn of its entrance into Active Pass.

We visited my parents who live on the mainland, about 1 1/2 hours from the ferry. After leaving the ferry terminal on Vancouver Island, our drive home is only about 20 minutes.
(edited to add: We spent two nights at my parents' place. Although we have done the round trip in a day, it's a long one.)

It was a slow afternoon. Unpacking, a bit of grocery shopping, some desultory cleaning, and reading that led to heavy eyes and a short nap. While I was out I dropped off some simple Valentines for our grandchildren. For the two of us we will likely do something tomorrow to celebrate Valentine's Day.

  1. Looks and sounds absolutely marvellous. I'm so happy I found your blog.

The Canadian flag is beautiful and unique πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦
The maple leaf is my second favourite leaf form, oak is number one. πŸ’š

I have - or have had - some distant relatives in Vancouver. My grandmother paid them a visit when she was 75. Didn't speak a word of English, bless her heart, but the relatives and their children took good care of her. She died when she was 99 so that was a long time ago.

  2. It really does look like a beautiful ride on the ferry, but also quite a big day out. It must add up to six hours travel time to visit your parents, plus the 20 minutes to home. I am sure they are thrilled when you visit. How gorgeous it would be to live in that house on the water with the mountains in the background. They are always so pretty. I think Canada's flag is the No.1 flag in the world.

    1. Hi Patricia. It is indeed a beautiful ride. We spent two nights with my parents. Although we can do the trip in one day, it's a very long and tiring day. Better to relax and spend some time with family.
I love my flag and I love my country. There is a huge upsurge of love and unity for Canada these days as we are under threats from you-know-who.

  3. Your ferry ride is the perfect length. I wonder if it’s ever rough. How wonderful to have all the other islands to view. I have visited Canada three times and it is my favourite country. So much varied scenery and wonderful friendly people. Your flag is beautiful too. Have a lovely weekend. B x

    1. Thank you, Barbara. The ferry can be rough - I've felt a bit queasy on occasion. If the weather is really bad, the ferries are cancelled, resulting in huge backups.
I'm glad you enjoy Canada - I love living here.

  4. I love ferries and when I went to Great Britain I always spent most of the crossing on the deck 4hours and a half ( in summer) in autumn and winter it was always rough so we had to stay inside.
But I enjoyed it even with a bad sea.
Your pictures are very nice with the blue sky and I am sure you must enjoy it.

    1. Ferry rides can be so enjoyable. I'd love to cross the English Channel (La Manche) on a ferry one day.

  8. How I wish I didn't suffer from motion sickness. There's not a ferry ride I've been on where I've actually been able to enjoy a moment or the views. :/

    1. Oh, that's too bad. I have to say, our ferries are very calm most of the time. It's hard to tell that they are moving sometimes.

  9. I’ve been on that ferry ride from Seattle to Vancouver Island in August 2003! Loved it! Also loved the time I spent in Victoria; ate at a restaurant outdoors in view of the water.

    1. Hello Nellie,
There is no ferry from Seattle to Vancouver Island, however, you might be thinking of the one from Port Angeles to Victoria. We can see the lights of the city across the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
Glad you enjoyed Victoria. It is a beautiful city and I'm happy to live here.

  11. I think a long ferry ride sounds delightful and relaxing, as does a slow afternoon back at home! There is far too much rushing about. Whenever possible, I like to slow it down. Hope you enjoyed your Valentine celebration today!

  12. Beautiful photos, how wonderful to be able to travel by ferry, it seems like a great adventure to me, not living near the sea:)

  13. I love your Canadian flag. Of all the flags in the world, I think it is the most beautiful. I'm surprised it is only 60 years old. And I would love a ferry ride, too!

  18. I think I would enjoy the ferry rides with so many interesting and beautiful sights to see along the way.
So nice that you were able to visit with your parents.
The Canadian flag will always hold a special place in my heart. My dad was born in Canada and I attended many family reunions there as a child.

The Forest in Spring

Spring has never been a favourite season. Too capricious, and rather deceptive. The bright sunshine on my head warms me, but the sharp win...
