Beautiful Little Things

The snow has melted and snowdrops are once again visible. They fared well under their white blanket for a couple of weeks.
I'm finding it important to focus on beautiful little things these days. My daughter found the blue and white jug in a store and thought of me. How sweet.

Hellebores are apparently tougher than they look for they, too, perked up once the snow was gone. I saw a tip to make thin slices in the stems before arranging them in a vase. It does seem to make the blooms last longer in the house.

The intricate heart of a Hellebore. So much to admire.

Today four-year-old Cora came for the morning. We made pizza buns together. I gave her the pizza dough I'd made earlier along with the rolling pin. She rolled the dough like a pro, lifting it from time to time and turning it. I was astounded. Her mother must have taught her to do this.

I let tulips hang around far past their prime. It is fascinating to see them curl and twist, shape-changing into aged beauties.

In the watercolour book I mentioned in my last post, the author had painted an Icelandic turf house. I took her idea and adapted it to paint from a photo I'd taken of one of the turf houses I saw.

This painting is from a Youtube tutorial of Harriet de Winton. It reminded me of our recent visit to Puerto Vallarta where clay pots and geraniums are frequently seen.

A little bit of painting is a good way to relax before going to bed. Painting or reading or some sort of handwork. What do you like to do to relax in the evening?

  1. I was looking if you had done watercolour and I love the Icelandic little house with it’s special roof.
The next painting is beautiful too I like the shades you have done on the wall and the terracotta, it would be nice to do a “ carnet de voyage “ maybe it is your idea? In the evening I read, the light is not good enough for painting and my husband does the puzzle we had for Christmas.

  2. Oh Lorrie, your paintings are gorgeous, and so neat! I am afraid these days I get ragged edges on everything I paint, which is not how I was when young. The little Ice House is stunning, and how interesting to see them in reality. We never see Hellebores here, and they are very striking, a great colour, and the blue jug is indeed perfect just for you.

  3. This pitcher of snowdrops is beautiful. Next week we should get 10 plus degrees... Spring blooming time :-)) how nice.
But now I'm enjoying the glittering snow in the brilliant sunshine, it's so beautiful outside, even though it's cold - minus 11 degrees - but the sun will really heat up by midday/afternoon... yesterday I ran without gloves in the sun during lunchtime :-)).
The watercolors are beautiful... I have it in the back of my mind too... but at the moment I'm busy with fabric - currently sewing a binding... and little things in between.

  4. I like to read. Unfortunately the book I am reading at the moment has really small print, so I find it difficult to read it in electric light. Having recently discovered the joys of BBC Sounds I have swapped reading for listening to podcasts for the time being.

  8. I absolutely must plant snowdrops next fall. I love them! And I love your painting as well. It's just charming! (Both, actually!). I always let tulips live out their life too. It just seems right, and I love how they evolve.

  9. I wonder if snowdrops grow in our area? I always admire the photos you share and love the name. My evening relaxation is usually reading or knitting. I like your little Icelandic house:)

  10. Beautiful flowers, jug and watercolors. Hats off to Cora and her mom! Greg's grandparents lived in sod houses and they called them soddies.

  12. So much to love in this post. Your beautiful paintings. Gorgeous snowdrops in such a pretty jug. I do love jugs. What a great idea about the hellebores. I will give that a go as I never have much luck bringing them indoors.
Can’t believe Cora is four already and an accomplished pizza dough maker :) B x

  13. The snowdrops in the blue and white jug make such a sweet little bouquet.
The hellebores are lovely as well.
You have so many talents, Lorrie. The watercolors are beautiful. What nice reminders of your travels too.

  14. I love snowdrops but they don't grow well in my soil. Soon my hellebores will be exposed
( covered with snow now). I'll try that tip about slitting the stem if any are blooming.
The paintings that you did look wonderful. I would frame the one of the turf house💗.

  17. I read in bed. And read blogs!
I am always amazed how far ahead of us you are. That ocean sure tempers the cold. We're knee-deep in snow.

  19. Good question but I'm no good in the evenings. Just TV for me then and early to bed. 🙂

The turf house is so cute, one can almost see a goat on the roof.

Pretty flower arrangements, I just love snowdrops. A long wait still here in Finland, but we do have some in our garden.

I find reading is very relaxing... especially so when the weather is not looking too good outside!
    Enjoy your weekend.

    All the best Jan
