Hodge Podge for the First Time

Every week, Joyce, of From This Side of the Pond, comes up with some interesting questions for bloggers to answer on their own blogs, and then post a link in her blog so we can all read the answers. I've read Hodge Podge posts for some time and thought I'd take part occasionally. So here goes - the questions are Joyce's, the answers mine.

1. Can you tell I'm embracing a Cinco de Mayo theme here this week? Do you like Mexican food? What's your favorite dish? How about on the side-black beans, pinto beans, refried beans, rice? What about heat-mild, medium, hot? Will you celebrate with Mexican food and drink on May 5th aka Cinco de Mayo?

I really like Mexican food. A lot. Fish tacos would be my favourite dish. I'm not as fond of the side dishes of beans and rice. Medium heat, please. We don't celebrate Cinco de Mayo here, but I might make pizza, since it's a Friday and a granddaughter will be spending the night.

2. Ever been to Mexico? For work or holiday? Love it or no? If you haven't been is this a place you'd like to visit? Can you speak Spanish?

Mexico is a wonderful place to visit in January or February when our local climate is dreary and cold. We've been several times, on holiday. I'd like to return to the Mexican Riviera. Yes, I can speak Spanish.

3. What's one thing you may accomplish this month?

This month, I may get my garden in, if the sun decides to shine and warm up the dirt.

4. If you were mayor of your village, city, or town, what's one thing you'd like to see changed, done away with, revamped, or accomplished? Is serving in public office something you've ever seriously considered?

I've never considered serving in public office. No interest at all. But I can certainly run the world from my living room!

5. What's something that may be popular, but that you just don't get?

Cold shoulder tops, books with covers torn off as decor, raw fish sushi.

6. Can't let this week slip by without mentioning Thursday May 4th is Star Wars Day. As in 'May the 4th be with you' ahem. Are you a fan of the Star Wars series? Exactly how much of a fan are you? On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being 'I've seen every film, own the action figures, might have dressed as Darth Vader for Halloween one year', and 1 being, 'what's a Vader?' -where do you land?

I've watched Star Wars and enjoy the movies, but I wouldn't consider myself a fan. Maybe a 2 on the scale.

7. Scroll back through your blog posts and in three sentences or less tell us the general theme of your fourth blog post. Does it still ring true today? Is it a topic you re-visit on your blog from time to time?

I was surprised to see that my fourth blog post (10 years ago) referenced Susan Branch. It was a link to an interview done on another blog. And I'm still a fan of her artwork, books and blog.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Many of my thoughts are random. It's hard to choose one from the whirl in my head. So here is a thought from Audrey Hepburn:

"For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others;
For beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness;
and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone."

  1. That was fun, very random fun! You don't like sashimi at all? What about ceviche, given all the time you spent in Latin America?

  2. I have never heard of Cinco de Mayo day or Star Wars Day for that matter, but love your quote from Audrey Hepburn, and the pink Tulips look fat and beautiful.

  7. Now wasn't that fun?! It may have been the first HP post, but I hope that it is not the last.I sure agree with all of your "don't get it" points. Those cold shoulder shirts...brrr...maybe in July. And the books turned backwards or with covers ripped off...????? 🤷🏻‍♀️

  8. We love Mexican food here, although we don't celebrate Cinco de Mayo. I cook Mexican at least once a week, and we like it pretty hot. I hope to be able to plant this month too, but it may have to wait until June... the nights are still just too cold. I've never participated in the Hodgepodge, but maybe someday soon.... Have a lovely day :)

  9. Great answers, Lorrie- I have been thinking about doing this hodgepodge, too, but haven't bit the bullet so far.
Love that you run your world from the living room. lol
It is always interesting to me to see how much alike some of are to each other. xo Diana

  10. Welcome to the Hodgepodge! Thanks for playing along today. I don't think I've seen the torn book decor, but I don't really get decorating with books you don't read anyway. I'm all about having a houseful of books, but reading them! Also, I don't think those cold shoulder tops look good on everyone who has embraced the trend. Good luck with your garden!

  11. Visiting from hodgepodge . . .I don't get raw fish either . . .my husband loves sashimi . . .I do not even want to put it in my mouth. I also don't like those cold shoulder tops!! they look cute on someone with very nicely defined arms . . .but not so much on everyone!

  15. Hi Lorrie...I enjoyed your answers, especially # 4...LOL! I don't think I even knew that books with the covers ripped off as décor was a thing...oh well...but I don't think I understand it either. I hope you get your chance to play in the dirt soon!

  16. Such fun and the tulips are indeed wonderful!
The questions and your answers are very interesting. I read also Joyce's answers, but I didn't find links to the other participants' blogs. Hmm, perhaps I'm too sleepy. We have been working in the garden today, even though not all snow is gone. Can you imagine, we may get some more (snow, that is) in the next days. :)
    Have a lovely day!

  17. What a fun hodge podge. Love mexican food, tonight is taco salad night. Also don't like those holes on the shoulder, but love raw fish sushi. The tulips are beautiful!

  18. I'm with you on #5! All of them!

  19. When I saw the title I thought it was a recipe you were referring to. My friends gave me the recipe for hodge podge (veggies with a nice cream sauce) and it is really good.

  20. Cinco de Mayo is strange because it's not celebrated here in Mexico. They had El Día de los Trajabadores Monday. I find that refried beans and rice are too much with my meal. I don't get ripped off cover books except that sometimes uncorrected proofs are given away without a cover. Neither do I get Star Wars Day. Hodge Podge is fun!

  21. What a fun post, my friend! I, too, have read several Hodge Podge Wednesday posts and thought it would be fun to participate....maybe someday soon :)

    Happy weekend! Hugs!

  22. Interesting post - love the Audrey Hepburn quote! I am with you on the cold shoulders, raw sushi (yuck), and defacing the books. The tulips are so pretty. x Karen

  23. Once in a while I like Mexican food, but it cannot be too spicey. I'm a wimp! Love salsas, love mole, love Chihuahua cheese

  24. I enjoyed reading your responses...and of course, formulated my own. I love Mexican food, but also don't care too much for the beans and rice side dishes. My favorite? Fish tacos. In fact, we had fish tacos in honour of Cinco de mayo. As for Star Wars, I have not read the books or seen the movies and have no desire to. I agree with you on 'cold shoulders, ripped books and raw fish sushi'! Oh, and I prefer to run the world from my living room as well. :)

  25. What fun - love your answers. Having lived 20 miles from the Mexican border (and now living 20 miles from the Canadian border) I adore Mexican food, though got spoiled by the authentic Mexican cooking - those dear ladies can make the best flour tortillas in the world - they melt in your mouth, and I miss them. They taught me to make them, but I don't have the touch that comes from making them all my life.

  26. Well, this was a fun read, and I learned a little more about you. No raw sushi for you, eh? I love the stuff, but wouldn't have ever considered eating it 20 years ago. ?? And definitely no public offices for me... running the world from my living room right along with you! ;)
