Trying Something New

Tim and I have talked about renting kayaks for several years. We've canoed and boated, but never kayaked. Until Sunday afternoon. The sunshine beguiled, the calendar free and off we went to Brentwood Bay.

Tim was in a snazzy Black Spartan and I in a cool blue Wave Sport. We might look like we know what we are doing, but really, it was an experiment with lots of giggles.

One sits very close to the water in a kayak. Birds seemed less wary as we approached them slowly and we were able to get quite close. We paddled our way into Tod Inlet where hundreds and hundreds of moon jellyfish floated in layers beneath the surface of the water.

Warm sunshine poured down on this last day of full summer. That night clouds rolled in and the rains began. Trees are beginning to change color.

After paddling for two hours I thought my arms and shoulders would be sore, but they were not. Better yet, my back felt loose and wonderful. This is no small thing. There will definitely be more kayaking in our future.

I'm doing something new this evening, too, and will hopefully share that tomorrow or Thursday. What's the last new thing you tried?

  1. I love canoeing, but I'm wondering if I'd feel too tucked in - in a kayak and stuck if it flips. I'm sure you'd get out, but it's just the feeling I can't get over. I was trying to think of what the last new thing I tried ... maybe bum drops on the trampoline? but I'm sure I did those when I was young.

  2. That looks like great fun! Bi would love to try it, but it would need overhead bars for my arms to guide me down and then hoist myself back up. My bad knee won't let me do things normally. Whenever I fall down, I am down for the count, LOL, until someone gets me back up. I try new things all the time in photoshop! Does that count? Haha...

  3. It's fun to try out new things. You never know what you might like. :) Looking forward for the new thing you will present next to us.

  4. Kayaking is something that I have always wanted to try. I'm just afraid that I would have trouble getting in and out. We purchased a place in the country this last spring, so gardening and preserving our fruits and vegetables is the new thing on my list this year:)

  5. We love our kayaks, and we're so lucky that we can pull them easily from our deck to the beach to the water. In our canoe, I always felt too dependent on Paul's steering, but in the kayak, I can make my own way (not a purist, I'm very happy to rely on my ruddy and steer with my knees;-)
So glad you enjoyed this -- you leave in a great place for it!
As for trying new things, the drawing and painting is my most recent foray and it will do me for now!

Looks like a wonderful outing. My one experience with Kayaking was fun. I found photography to be a challenge while kayaking.

  7. It would be so refreshing to kayak amidst such wonderful scenery. Lovely photos. We have canoed, but not kayaked. It was fun to sneak up near a beaver house and hear the young ones meowing.

  11. Earlier today I finally played with picmonkey and made some collages. That was new. Enjoyed very much.

    Your kayaking looks like fun.

  12. I wish I could get into a kayak or canoe and enjoy floating on the water like that. It looks so beautiful and you had nice calm water. I don't think I've done anything new lately. Does going to physiotherapy count? lol

  15. That looks like great fun - the photos are fabulous. Are you concerned that you might drop the camera in the water? That is something I would do.

My new thing this week is physical therapy for my legs after back surgery - not the most exciting thing - but it promises to help.

  16. My son loves to kayak! When he was in high school, he worked for an outdoor store that specializes in kayaks and was bitten by the bug. He insisted that they are safer than canoes because they sit lower in the water, thus have more stability. (That made me feel better until he went ocean kayaking!)

How interesting that you found it to be physically invigorating! And then the lovely scenery and the moon jellyfish...sounds like a beautiful day!

  18. We've talked about getting a small kayak for our pond but they scare me because I'm afraid if the tip, my feet will get stuck and I won't be able to get out. You two have such wonderful outings!

  19. There are places in the PNW which rent kayaks, but I too am a bit afraid of it turning over. It looks amazing though and very peaceful.

  20. Now that looks like fun. What a way to see beautiful scenery. My husband is not a water person having grown up on a farm out on the flatlands where there is very little water. He barely knows how to swim. You looked like you had great fun.

  21. I just love how you two just get out there and do new things, especially your water sports!
I've kayaked a few times and loved it - as you say skimming along so close to the water gives everything a new perspective.
The last new thing I tried was zip lining in Hawaii - now that was great fun AFTER the initial fear of dropping off that tower the first time….then I loved it!

    Happy paddling dear.

  22. I love kayaking too....when we sold our big boat I sold my kayak. It is such a peaceful way to explore those cozy inlets and listen to the sounds of nature.
You might get hooked on them and before you know if you'll be stowing them alongside your boat so that when you get to an anchorage you'll be free to float close to shore and expand your range.

  25. Looks wonderful there. My youngest son just did this...organized a whole bunch of friends and they ( 20 or more ) all spent a day kayaking and can't wait to do it again ! :)

  26. I know people that kayak frequently and they'd never boat any other way. It would make me feel too claustrophobic I think but it's something I'd have to try to know.
My new experience is creating a Keynote (Mac) presentation on shade gardening and trying new features with it. I'm thankful that it is user friendly because my computer knowledge is basic.

  27. I have a friend who enjoys kayaking. She says it's very relaxing. I've never tried it, I can't swim (but I guess the lifejacket would help with that). Loved your shots, what a pretty place to enjoy this new sport.

  28. Not sure what the last new thing was for me, but I must say you make kayaking look fun. I was always afraid of tipping over.
