Five on Friday: This and That

1. One of our BC Ferries slips between islands. These boats are our link to the mainland. I find riding the ferry rather relaxing, although it took me awhile to get used to the slower pace. There are restaurants, coffee shops, and a small gift store on the larger ferries, like the one above.

Another view - closer up. This ferry is docked and was loading when we chugged by in our boat last weekend. It looked awfully big so close up. Ferries have the right of way, so we had to be careful to be well out of the way before the captain decided to leave. I kept an eye on the loading lanes (not visible from this angle) and the cars were still driving on as we passed.

2. I clipped a few dahlias yesterday evening just before darkness fell. As I arranged them, I noticed a dark something in one of those petals, tucked up tightly. After a bit of gentle shaking and pulling, a disoriented and very sleepy bumblebee tumbled onto the counter top. I carefully put him on a paper towel and set him outside. He was gone this morning.

3. Breakfast on the boat. We're still picking raspberries from our canes - such a treat. Chocolate bread from the bakery purchased just before we left last Friday night. Bacon, eggs, tea and coffee and a sunny day. This weekend is supposed to be rainy, and the view will be very different.

4. I've been looking for a good apple loaf. One with chunks of apple in it, not just applesauce. I tried this one today and I'm not very thrilled. It's edible, but heavy. I'll keep trying. Does anyone have a good recipe to share?

5. A few plants clipped during one of my evening walks - Queen Anne's Lace and Hawthorne branches. They look well together - almost Christmassy to my mind, although the teal jug relieves some of that.

The weekend ahead looks like an indoor one, although I hope to harvest and deal with more tomatoes. There will be laundry and house puttering, I'm sure. Nothing out of the ordinary planned here. What plans do you have for the weekend?

  1. It must be wonderful to travel by ferry - it's been too long since I have been on one! Your floral arrangement is wonderful and the food looks delicious. We are expecting rain, too....going to a Seahawk's party at my son's house this weekend. It's his birthday:) xx Karen

  2. That breakfast looks delicious, I could just eat that now. No real plans this weekend, just pottering.

  3. I've enjoyed seeing how you use the ferry to get around. Someone in our neighbourhood gave us some cooking apples and I was glad of them as our young apple tree did not bear sound fruit this year. I make apple pies or crumble so haven't a cake recipe. It's our granddaughter's 18th birthday tomorrow so we shall go to her birthday party.

  4. I've been on a ferry before but not nearly that big...how fun to ride such a large one.
Your apple bread looks good but I know what you mean on being a little disappointed...I've had a lot of those lately. I have a new recipe to try but it's a Banana cake, not apple.

  5. Oh I would love to eat that breakfast now :D

  6. Your breakfast looks yummy & I think the flower arrangement is lovely, though it would make me sneeze! Too bad you can't dry it & use it again in a few months as it does look festive.
I make a delicious apple CAKE but have never tried doing a loaf before. Email me if you want the cake recipe. Or I should go ahead & make it & blog about it! Thanks for the idea. :)

p.s. Seeing how big that boat is reminded me of a sm. sailboat we were passengers on that got too close to a HUGE barge on Lake Erie. I've never been so scared in my life!!!!

  7. I have a good recipe. I'll do my best to remember to send it. Your boat breakfast looks cozy and delightful! Enjoy the rainy weekend!

  8. Its time to do some cutting back in my flower gardens, so I'll be doing that on Saturday. I'm looking forward to it being all tidied up.

Then on Sunday I'm hosting a small baby shower for my daughter in law. So I'll be preparing for that on Saturday also.

  9. Oh we have a ferry across the Mersey too! It is a great way to travel. Your arrangement does look a little christmassy but there is nothing wrong with that, thoughts are already turning that way around here. Have a lovely weekend xx

  11. Beautiful post! We used to go by ferry from Felixstowe to Zeebrugge, but I don't think it runs anymore. I did manage a tug-boat trip on my holiday. Not sure I'd do that again. It was a little scary as I'm not a big fan of boats.

    Have a great weekend

  12. Your boats look so big compared to ours in the Channel Islands. Sadly our harbour isn't deep enough so we have slightly less efficient smaller one that stops sailing as soon as it is slightly windy. Love your flower arrangement in the teal jug. Beautiful. Have a good weekend. B X

Enjoyed your this and that post. That loaf looks fabulous, too bad it's heavy. Yep, we are getting a change in weather for the weekend just in time for a launch at church for the fall. Good thing they have it under a huge tent! We have company from California this weekend that are headed to your island on Monday on one of those big ferries!

  14. It all sounds rather exciting. I must get my map out and see how far you have to go on the ferry. Great five. Enjoy your weekend.

  15. Funny story about apple bread.... I made zucchini bread last week. My son doesn't like zucchini bread so I sent some home with him and told him it was Apple bread. Next day he texted that the Apple bread was Delicious!

  16. Great set of photos/randoms. - The Ferry looks big, and having restuarants & gift shops on board would help to pass the time. My your breakfast looked tasty. The Apple Bread looked good, I'm sorry it was "heavy" - I enjoy breads like that.
Pretty Dahlia and I'm glad you rescued the sleepy bumblebee.

  17. Love the slow pace of the ferry rides. I have a delicious apple bread recipe, but it doesn't have chunks in it. Love the sleepy bumblebee having to be escorted outdoors. Yummm, chocolate bread for breakfast.

  18. The ferry (and the breakfast) look wonderful. Dahlias are so attractive I think I will try and grow some next year. I made Tucks Apple cake yesterday from the BBC Food website in a loaf tin. The mixture was quite stiff but the chunks of apple made the baked cake light and moist.

  19. Riding on ferry boats have been positive adventures for me thus far, but I much prefer having my feet on solid ground looking out at pretty water. I'm glad you were able to save the bee and enjoy your lovely flowers. The rain visiting you is supposed to visit me as well, so I think my weekend will be spent puttering around inside and dashing back and forth to church...and celebrating a friend's birthday here later. Have a good weekend!

  20. What lovely photos - the ferries do look huge up close. We went to Lopez Island for a few days last weekend - I just love the slow ferry ride - but ours was only 40 minutes each way - I wanted longer - I could ride forever. Your breakfast looks terrific. And do I have an apple bread/cake recipe for you. A friend gave it to me years ago - and it is a huge favorite. It has 4 cups of chopped or shredded apples in it - and a cup of pecans (if you like nuts) - Some people bake it in a 9x13 pan and frost it - I prefer it baked in a bundt pan or two loaf pans and cut like bread. Some put butter on it - my husband likes his in a bowl with a little milk on it - I'm a purist - just cut me a slice and give me a cup of tea and I'm happy.

I see that the weekend rain has already started - it smells so good when it first starts - and we had our lawn mowed yesterday so it smells even better. Enjoy our rainy weekend - I have some crafting planned. Hmmm - might make the apple cake/bread.

  21. Catching a ferry between islands sounds so relaxing. The dahlias are very pretty as is your arrangement in the blue jug. No firm plans for the weekend just pottering here and there ignoring all the things I probably should be doing. Have a lovely weekend:)

  22. We have ridden several small ferries (one or two cars at a time) in our area, and one big one! At the beginning of the ride, it was exciting. We stood out on the deck with the cool spring wind blowing in our faces, taking in the view. Then we went inside to warm up with a cup of coffee and enjoyed the relaxing pace.

Your apple bread looks like it would pair well with a cup of coffee. Hope you find a recipe you like.

    Enjoy your puttery weekend!

  23. We took one of the BC ferries from Victoria to Vancouver one year. It was a really pleasant trip. I was surprised that it took three hours (if my memory is correct!). My brother said he once took it during a bad storm and it was an awfully bumpy ride.

I don't have a recipe for apple loaf, but I have a really good one (actually two) for apple cake! I'll share them on my blog once I look them up. They're very easy and really good.

Lots of rain here today, and stuffy and damp in the house. Tomorrow we're supposedly back to sunshine.

  24. These ferries are very huge ! We have them to go from France to England.

  25. It looks as if you are still enjoying beautiful sunshine. We are too, it's been amazing this week. Your pics are beautiful, as always, and I've just been to check my hawthorn tree - the berries are not quite red yet, so you are ahead of us. But Queen Anne's Lace in September??? That's a May flower here. You really are on the other side of the world. Hope the weather has been kind on the boat this weekend. x

  28. Your breakfast looks so appetizing! Your apple bread as well, even though you said it was not as good as you would have liked. I have been on ferries to Victoria – from some island around Vancouver I believe, and also a couple of times from Seattle. The last ferry I took was last year from Alameda Island, in the Bay Area to San Francisco – that was very pretty – I mean arriving in SF that way. I also took the ferry between New Orleans and Algiers, but that was a short passage.

  29. Good things...your 'this and that' collection! We've spent quite a few hours aboard BC Ferries recently...with one trip that we won't forget anytime soon. :) Your apple loaf looks great!

  30. Hope you find an apple loaf to your liking...I think you can just add some stewed apple chunks to the mix once you find "the one." Must say, though, that, if we were judging by the cover, that one looks delicious. How long a crossing is it to the mainland? You've probably said many times, but I am just now picking up on this. I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

  31. What a diverse five you have, very enjoyable :) I would like to do a short cruise one day but hubby gets very sea sick he tells me. The Sydney to Auckland one would suit me fine, maybe I can coerce someone into going with me.
Your breakfast looks delicious, I'm trying to make up my mind whether to remove the raspberry canes that have come through from the neighbour or to cultivate them - fresh raspberries are so yum.

  32. Your food shots never fail to make me salivate. Yum! I love weekends where I can just putter around the house.

  33. Very interesting about the ferries. I never knew that had all of these amenities! And your boat looks very nice as well.

I just Pinned a recipe for Apple Cake and I liked it because it did have apple chunks as well as a nice artisan topping with apple slices. I have it on my Pinterest board (you can find the link on my blog) under Desserts.

Thanks for a great post, Lorrie!

  34. I had to laugh at your number 2. A few weeks back I took some hydrangea cuttings down to my son's place and had put them in water in a vase.

One of the twin grands told me "Oma there is a bee there" and there was! I had carried it, unseen to me, all the way down the street...and my son is highly allergic to bees!

Thank God for her seeing that little bee asleep in the bouquet! We put the bouquet outside on the deck instead of keeping it in the house...until the bee decided to move on :)

  35. Nice photos but now you've made me hungry!

  36. I look forward VERY much to visiting Vancouver Island. I am also anxious to take the car ferry up the coast from Washington to Alaska, debarking whenever we get an urge to explore! Wonderful post. Love the ferry shots! And I love that blue pitcher of flowers!

  37. Breakfast on the boat looks scrumptious. I hadn't been on a ferry for a long time until we took the one to Mackinac Island and it was wonderful to sit on the top deck in the open air.

  38. Your Autumn seems ahead of ours though you are still picking raspberries. Breakfast looks good.

  39. Finally catching up on a little blog reading Lorrie. I envy you your seasons, ours are not so clearly defined as yours, here in Queensland. Looking at your dahlias reminded me of our visit to the Buchart (??) Gardens in 2008. It was late September and the dahlias were beautiful - a delightful place. Cheers.
