Christmas Reading List and Some News

Shall we hear the news first? We welcomed a new little granddaughter into our family on Saturday. More details will follow, but everyone is well. We had Big Sister Iris (almost 18-months) stay with us for three days and had so much fun with her. However, having children is definitely for the younger set.

Christmas decorating was set aside while I sang songs, played games, and cuddled with a sweet little one. I'll get back into it later this week.

A few weeks ago I wrote about books and stories I like to read at Christmas time, and asked for your suggestions. I've compiled a list for your reading delight. I've not read everything on the list, but on your recommendation I found a copy of Christmas at Fairacre (includes No Holly for Miss Quinn, The Christmas Mouse, and another story), and thoroughly enjoyed it.

  1. Welcome to Iris's little sister - they will be good companions and friends for one another.
That was such a great idea you had to compile a Christmas book list. We shall all probably be reading much more over the Christmas period with so few family get-togethers happening.

  9. Congratulations! I can't think of anything more exciting than the birth of a new baby! Our children and grandchildren are the ones that make our world go round. Where would we be without them? I hope you will be able to share a photo soon and give us all a little treat. You have a nice selection of Christmas reading material there. I have read Charles Dickens and Shepherds Abiding but no others. Thank you for sharing your good news with us at my party. Enjoy the rest of your week!

  19. Such wonderful news, Lorrie! It will be fun to see Iris in her role as big sister, being just a baby herself! Busy times ahead for the family and I’m glad they are close to you. Looks like the baby news took over. I looked through that list of books and realized I have not read any of them. With more time this season, maybe I should read a book.

Thank you for the interesting book recommendations. I would start with Paul Gallico. If those books are like the ones I have read by him, they must be lovely. :)
    Happy Advent!

  22. Ah, Miss Read - my favorite for forty years. I have them all, reread one whenever Ineed to be amused and relax. I’m so glad I wrote a letter of appreciation before she died, which her daughter sweetly responded to.

  24. Good evening, Lorrie. Such a selection list of books. I have a list as well, and should have shared them. However, a few on your list caught my attention.

Now, to your most beautiful Christmas gift ~ a beautiful baby girl. I can't wait to hear her name, because any couple who chose Iris would certainly provide another lovely name.

Wishing you a wonderful and happy December, Lorrie. And, many blessings to you and your family.

  27. I'm so happy for your family, Lorrie! The arrival of a new granddaughter is the best gift of all. I have an 8 year old granddaughter and her little sister just turned 6 and they are the joy of my life. It will be so much fun seeing these two sisters grow up together. You and your husband will have a bevy of grandchildren now and I know they love their time with you.

I see that you treasure the old speckled Christmas ornaments too! Years ago when I started collecting them people thought I was crazy but I do adore them. I've written down a few of your Christmas book suggestions. I know I would love to have the Anne stories.

Blessings on the newest baby and her family,
    Dewena

  28. Back again, Lorrie, to say that I saw your Shepherds Abiding in your reading stack. Did you know there is a wonderful Facebook book club on Jan Karon's work? There are quite a few FB groups for her but Mitford Book Club is dedicated strictly to joint reading and discussion of her books and Mary Jo Tate is the administrator and does an excellent job of keeping the discussions geared toward the books with the blessing of Jan. Right now they are reading Shepherds Abiding!

Your Christmas reading list is extensive, Lorrie. I’ve read a few of them...Winter Solstice and Red Bird Christmas are two that I noticed right of the bat. Let us know your reviews. Happy December and first week of advent.
