Traveling Downtown

We had a taste of Mexican culture on Sunday afternoon. Although we won't be traveling south any time soon, our local Mexican-Canadian association did several performances around the downtown core on Sunday. A typical mariachi band and dancers in colourful costumes played and whirled on the steps of the Legislature building where Captain Vancouver's statue stands. I wonder if he was lucky enough to see such a sight on his travels up the west coast.

Then off we walked to Fisherman's Wharf where we enjoyed Mexican food for lunch - I had Prawn Tacos and he had Prawns Diablo. We seem to always order the same each time we go.
We eat mostly western European-style food at home, but if I had to choose just one other culture's food to enjoy, it would be Mexican. Not Mexican-American which tends to be very heavy on the cheese and fat, but authentic Mexican. Although some people say it's too spicy, I've found that the spice is often added as a condiment and to one's personal liking.

What cultural food traditions do you enjoy?

After lunch we wandered along the waterfront. Lush hanging baskets are a trademark of Victoria's downtown core where the tourists hang out. The US/Canada border is now open to Americans coming across, but oddly not to Canadians going south. Very strange considering our vaccination rates are higher and case rates much lower than those of the USA. However, as in everything about this strange time, it seems that politics and not common sense is involved.

One of my favourite downtown buildings is the Customs House. It was built shortly after British Columbia's entry into the federation of Canada by the Dominion Government who wanted to establish a federal image. It was built in the Second Empire Style, with a mansard roof covered in slate tiles, and was designed to impress upon the new province the stability of the new nation.

The building really came into its own during the Klondike Goldrush of 1897. Here prospectors obtained certificates enabling them to pass through the Yukon customs house without delay. The government enforced regulations about the entrance of foreign goods, and Victoria did a booming business outfitting miners with the equipment and supplies needed for their northern adventures.

The building is now used for offices for various firms.

And home again where the roses are blooming beautifully. They had a hard time with the extreme heat in mid-late June and have taken awhile to recover. These sit on my dining table and waft their fragrance when I walk by.

  1. Gorgeous photos!

Lovely time out! How wonderful, after being locked up, for so long!

Canadians can not come to USA! But this Administration has been letting Illegals pour into our Country, from the Mexican border.

    Political!

    Stupid!

    They bring COVID!

    Political!

    Stupid!

An example of what the US got, electing this Administration!

Needless to say, I did not.

  4. Love the colourful Mexican outfits.
Since we visited Sri Lanka I find that I often use food products now in my own cooking that we discovered there. However, I always enjoy an Italian meal and often make them too.
There have been so many crazy decisions taken during this pandemic. We watched the Proms from the Albert Hall last weekend. One of the male solists sang his heart out to the huge audience, some in masks, some not. He left the platform and then returned to sing again later. As he walked in he was wearing a mask, which he then removed to sing. He had obviously been told to do this, but what a lot of nonsense.

  5. Your day sounds like fun and I love the food! We like California Mexican food. We have a restaurant in NC that serves it and one here too. They use some zucchini in the dishes...the only difference I can tell! But it's SO good!

  9. Well, if you lived below our southern border you could come right in. It is a little weird that the U.S. isn't reciprocating. We have to have Mexican food at least once a week. It's become our comfort food. Your food looks delicious!

  10. Lorrie - my husband and I worked in Mexico for three years, and we were often invited to the homes of co-workers. That's REAL Mexican food! We always had a mariachi band start our company Christmas parties - every time I see one now, it brings back great memories! We are glad the border has re-opened for vaccinated folks and hope that it will soon be reciprocated!

  11. i love the bright colours of their dresses, so cheerful. Nice to go out for a Mexican meal. We also have little breaks instead of going on holidays this year.
Thank you for the visit, it was very interesting!
I love your roses, ours have been damaged by the constant rain. But we will have one week of sun, good for the flowers.

  12. So much foolishness in the states right now. There is definitely an agenda that the citizens did not vote for!

  13. You live in such a beautiful area, Lorrie. Those hanging baskets are so vibrant and lush. From your previous post, I agree that little ones love playing with water. They are content with pouring and pouring. Your book choices are intriguing. I have never read any Miss Read books. Of course, your baking, cooking snd gardening always makes me smile. Happy weekend!

  16. It must be so frustrating with your borders only going one way. Good that your vaccination rate is going well. Those prawn tacos sound delicious. We rather like Chinese food, not surprising as we have a Chinese daughter in law. Hope you have a lovely weekend. B x

  17. Hello, Lorrie. Oh, how I love the beautiful colorful costume the lady is wearing. I know it had to be glorious to see in person. It seems as though you enjoyed a lovely day.
I also enjoyed seeing your Customs House with the mansard roof. We have several old homes in our town with mansard roof's. I have always admired them.
As far as food goes, we enjoy French, Italian, Mexican and some Deep South cooking.

    Have a lovely week!
