Surprise Snow!

On Monday morning fat flakes of snow drifted slowly downwards. Rain mixed with snow later on made for a chilly day. Last night the snow began in earnest with temperatures dropping down to just below zero (Celsius).

This morning it looks like a formal occasion in the garden with everyone wearing top hats. It's a little odd in that many leaves are hanging onto their branches, and a lot of them have not yet turned colour.

An odd year all around. Record high temperatures long into October followed by a couple of weeks of autumn sun and rain, and now this!

From my writing desk perch I see the dog next door romping through on the snow-covered grass. Dark-eyed Juncos flit in and out of the lilac tree branches, and a bright red-headed House Finch perches on the swaying cedar hedge. Are they as baffled as we are?

A big pot of pumpkin soup is simmering on the stove on this chilly morning, and I'm on my second big mug of tea with honey. It's a good day for staying home and that's what I've got planned. Temperatures will rise today and all of the snow will disappear, but this early taste of winter has me wondering what the rest of the season will hold.

Any weather anomalies out your way?

  1. While the pictures are quite beautiful, please, please, please keep the snow there and do not send it my way. I am NOT ready for winter...honestly-I am NEVER ready for winter! xo Diana

  3. My comment also disappeared. I'll try again.
Looks like winter has arrived with the early snow. DH said he saw flakes falling yesterday but I missed them. Strong winds made for a couple of power outages, thankfully short ones.

  5. Pretty as the snow may be, melting is its best feature. :)

  6. It sure looks pretty, especially when there are still colorful leaves. We are under a hurricane watch....again! So that's not good. We are preparing today and I hiked this morning before we start getting rain and wind. It's always something, isn't it? Hugs, Diane

  7. burr. The temperature plummeted here last night and it feels like 1 today after 18 yesterday. The wind is so high we stayed home.

  8. Snowy pictures always look so pretty. It's not often the flowers are wearing top hats. That must have been surprising. Your weather does, indeed, sound like it's having trouble making up it's mind. Here, it had been unseasonally warm, but now we seem to be closer to "normal" temperatures.

    Enjoy your pumpkin soup ...

  10. I love your description of the flowers in top hats. And your bird bath is so sweet.

  11. How odd! I hope it is not a harbinger of things to come. This is definitely not the year for more misery with weather. Lovely descriptions, Lorrie.

  12. What a surprise! I've just been doing up a calendar for my Vancouver kids. Lots of fun shots of their year.

  13. Wow, snow! We have said it feels like it could snow and there is snow in the hills around us; but no snow here yet. Just rain, but it cleared enough very early this morning to see the full moon.

  14. beautiful snow ! I don’t think we will have snow here anymore , it’s too hot and we may not have anymore winters. The temperatures are going down a little, but last week during the school holidays people could still take a bath in the sea in November and some places had 30 degrΓ©s C .

  15. I love the little "top hats" and a snow that melts away in a short time. I also love pumpkin soup and puttering around inside. Sounds like such a cozy day!

  16. Pretty snow pictures. Yes, Florida is facing another hurricane in the next two days. A little late for this time of the year. Ian landed in my area, but Nicole it moving towards the other coast.

  17. I was surprised to see that our friend Gina received snow, and now it has arrived with you. Here it is still mild considering how close we are getting towards December. I actually find it quite alarming as I saw a bush covered in new Camillia flowers a few days ago - will the plant flower again in the spring, or does it think that spring has arrived already?

  18. Surprise, surprise, surprise . . . I think it's beautiful, but I'd rather see it in photos than on the ground. When there is snow on the ground I stay home . . . it's wonderful to have that option. I did my share of scraping car windows and warming up the car to get to work on time. It's not fun!

  19. How pretty, Lorrie! We've had a light snowfall x2 recently but each time it melted quickly. t has been unusually warm and dry but I heard on the news last night that unusually cold weather for this time of year may be arriving this week. It confuses the poor trees and shrubs when that happens!

  20. The color in your garden under the white blanket of snow makes me want some so badly! I'm wondering if your red headed House Finch is the same one we call Rosy Finch? We have been unseasonably warm but it should end this weekend with a cold front headed in.

  21. I am sure that your snow will not remain for long, Lorrie, and if you get really lucky the poor air quality you are having to endure will disappear with it.

  22. Hi Lorrie~ Your photos are so pretty, I love snow! I had 6 inches of new snow in my backyard on Wednesday morning...not too strange for Idaho, but not the normal either. We really need snow here so I'm not complaining! Have a great week-end! Hugs, Barb

  23. Such beautiful photos, Lorrie! You have had more snow than us so far!
We have today a FΓΆhn wind blowing. It's perhaps more typical to spring and the strong wind, sunshine and about +10 C in November makes one think of spring. It's a good weather for garden works and we start to be ready for winter. (Hoping it will not be very hard... especially in Ukraine.)
Thank you for your comment! Your family is so lucky - you make wonderful gifts with your sewing machine.

  24. We rarely have any snow, so I see only the nice side about it: white color, and making for beautiful photos of nature elements covered by it.

  25. The photos are beautiful, Lorrie.
We are bracing for a very wet season as the monsoon rains have started.

  26. Lorrie - catching up on blog posts since our recent trip to the UK. It was Autumn when we left and Winter when we returned! In town, many of the deciduous trees still had leaves when a wet snow wreaked havoc and pulled down many branches. They are still piled high in the streets and on the sidewalks!

  27. This happened at my daughter's in northern California last week! Those top hats are truly cute. Pumpkin soup sounds so good. It's been very cold here, too, and I have a few pumpkins still... I might put one to use this week.

  29. I can't believe the west coast got snow before us! Our weather anomaly was temperatures in the high 10s/low 20s at the beginning of the month!

  30. I didn't realize you got that much snow! Our grandson from Indonesia was waiting for this and was disappointed that the forecast was wrong. I love those little snow hats on everything!
