I made a Butternut Squash and Beet Gratin to go with our beef stew and rice for dinner. As I sliced I thought about how well my knife worked. Good knives make cooking so much easier, and I am thankful that my husband regularly sharpens my knives. I could get a mandolin, but I tried that once and found that I preferred a knife. The slices may not be as even or as thin, but it works for me.
Here's the end result, quite delicious. I love vegetables more than fruit - always have. And there are so many things one can do with fresh produce. Sometimes it's hard to think of new ideas. I will occasionally leaf through a cookbook from the shelf, or one of my Fine Cooking magazines for ideas.
The Cozy Commonplace Book by Miranda Mills is pretty inside and out, with lovely illustrations and designs on many pages. I found this quote
I think, after all, I like a clean kitchen better than any other room.
George Eliot to Miss Sara Hennell 16 October 1863
I agree with Eliot - if the kitchen is tidy, the whole house feels calmer. And it doesn't take long to clean up if I wipe counters and put things away as I work.
Today marks 100 years since the publication of Winnie-the-Pooh in 1926 by A. A. Milne. I did not grow up with Winnie-the-Pooh stories, but read a few of them to my children. That silly old bear became quite dear despite his forgetfulness and love of honey. And he said some wise and funny things:

Our BBC radio stations have been celebrating this anniversary. I've got the dramatised stories, with Dame Judi Dench as narrator and Kanga, Stephen Fry as Pooh and the wonderfully cast Geoffrey Palmer as Eyore.
ReplyDeleteA.A. Milne's characters are unforgettable - each one with a unique personality.
DeleteWe are definitely a Winnie The Poo family. Our youngest grandchild shrieks with delight when he sees Winnie :). The gratin looks delicious. I love cooking this time of year. Hearty stews and soups. So much to enjoy :) B x
ReplyDeleteA. A. Milne really knew how to appeal to children with his characters. Cooking with autumn produce is wonderful.
DeleteI have three small butternut squash sitting on my kitchen counter from the CSA. I want to make soup with at least one of them very soon. Your recipe sounds good but Dan is not a fan of beets so I won't be trying it.
ReplyDeleteToday I hope to finish the last clean up of a couple of garden beds. The rest can wait for early spring. It will be a cold day to work outside but at least the sun will be shining.
Butternut squash is so delicious, and can be cooked in so many ways.
DeleteThere are so many of the classic children's books I didn't know about until adulthood. Your veggie dish looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteMe, too. I didn't even discover Anne of Green Gables until my early adulthood.
DeleteIt's getting cold here! I hope you have a good winter. I am getting ready for it.
ReplyDeleteIt's still very warm here in the afternoons. We need rain!
DeleteI used to read Winnie to my son!
ReplyDeleteDear Winnie the Pooh, he has been a part of so many childrens'lives. I always enjoy
ReplyDeleteMiranda Mills' posts and wondered about buying her book. The Eliot quote is so appropriate!
Miranda Mills' books are lovely for dipping in and out of, and I also discover a lot of other books through her posts.
DeleteEverything here is so lovely. The flowers, the squash, oh, the cooked dish! And of course the color!
ReplyDeleteAutumn holds loveliness in abundance.
DeleteWhat beautiful Zinnias and golden leaves. Autumn is so pretty, and the golden pumpkin is always delicious. I prefer a knife too. Maybe we have become experts with a knife and don't need modern inventions! Winnie the Pooh was a favourite at our house, for me as a child and our children too. Timeless.
ReplyDeleteAutumn is such a lovely season - my favourite. And now you are heading into Spring, which has its own loveliness.
