Indian Summer

Along the line of smoky hills
The crimson forest stands
And all the day the blue-jay calls
Throughout the autumn lands.

Now by the brook the maple leans
With all his glory spread
And all the sumachs on the hills
Have turned their green to red.

Now by great marshes wrapt in mist
Or past some river's mouth
Throughout the long, still autumn day
Wild birds are flying south.

(Wilfred Campbell, 1889)

Over the weekend I heard the geese honking and saw their V-formation overhead. This morning I noticed the temperature was 5 degrees (Celsius) on the thermometer outside my kitchen window. After a glorious September of record sunshine and heat, autumn is definitely here.

  1. Cinq degrés !! Comme c'est déjà froid !
Tonight we enjoyed a walk in a park in Basel (two minutes from the girls' school) and coming back, at 6 pm, the temperature was still 23°c ! It is said it will last until Wednesday. We'll see. In the meantime, we made the most of it, remembering that last winter was LONG !

  2. Seems like autumn is truly descending across the country now. I actually put socks on my feet a few minutes ago because they felt chilled on this sunny, by windy cool day.

    Nice photo!

  4. Hi Lorrie,

What a beautiful photo and poem.

You had me laughing from your comment. Hubby does question a lot but now seems to have "calmed down".
I can't believe how fast the 6 years have flown by.

    Hugs,
    Barb
