A French Soup Ladle and a Family Weekend

This past weekend was full of family times. We missed our youngest and her husband, but my parents came over on the ferry and we gathered on Sunday afternoon for dinner, a walk, talking and admiring the antics of Little Misses A and S. We no longer need much entertainment with the two little ones around.

I put some lights in my ficus tree and Little Miss A thought them striking. She crawled around "through the forest" between the tree and the chair just in front of it. Her imagination is developing by leaps and bounds. So much fun!

Do you read Corey Amaro's blog Tongue in Cheek? If you love old things, have a yen for French culture and whimsy, you'll enjoy her blog. Corey is American, married to a handsome Frenchman and frequents the brocantes, or flea markets of southern France. Recently she had a giveaway for this old French soup ladle, and I won!

The package arrived several weeks ago and I intended to polish the silver before photographing it. Alas, that has not yet happened. I've been teaching this week - English and Socials - and preparation is taking a lot of time. But, in the meantime, I'm admiring the graceful, slender lines of the ladle, and the not-too-elaborate design work.

Soup is a great meal for cold nights, and there are so many different kinds of soup. Coconut vegetable, chicken noodle, creamy squash, roasted sweet potato, and on and on. What's your favourite soup?

  4. My favorite soup? I might have a hard time naming one...as I am a fan of soup. Tuscan Tomato Basil is one of them...along with borscht, and bean soup and homemade chicken noodle soup...butternut squash, turkey chowder...and the list goes on.

Love the ladle! I got an antigue silver gravy ladle from a friend last year...and treasure it.

  5. Lorrie, Your weekend sounds wonderful. Here in the US so many of us spent the weekend exactly the same way while celebrating Thanksgiving. Congratulations on winning the soup ladle. I love the design. Soup is my favorite meal when the weather changes. I hope you are having a wonderful weekend. Bonnie

  6. Oh yes, what fun it is to watch little ones! I think you enjoy the watching part even more as a grandparent. Your family pictures are so sweet.

Your new ladle is lovely! Congratulations on your win! But for me, naming a favorite soup is almost like naming a favorite child. Okay, not quite...but I don't think I can do it! I have never made (nor eaten) roasted sweet potato soup, so that one intrigues me...

  7. P.S. We did indeed have quite enough pie! In fact, we still have pie!

  8. Home made Lettuce soup is my favourite, closely followed by French Onion.
The Little Misses are growing up so fast, how lovely that the Great Grans were there too.

  9. Aaaww, such a sweet looking family! Glad you had a nice get-together. And congratulations on your bloggy win too. Soup is one of the perfect foods to eat in the winter. I have so many favorites, but lately I've had a hankering for a cheese or potato soup.

  10. What a nice old soup ladle! I'm sure you will enjoy using that. I love soups too. There is a favorite of mine from Paula Deen that I like to whip up when it's cold outside. It's almost like a stew.

  12. Congratulations on your win. That is a most beautiful ladle, sure to appear at many of your nice family gatherings where soup is on the menu.
We love soup too. Last night it was turkey soup made from the Thanksgiving turkey carcass and meat. I'm hard pressed to pick a favorite as I have so many.
