On a Rainy Night

Heavy clouds and rain blocked the sun yesterday, resulting in a very dark afternoon. After coming home from shopping, I lit a candle to dispel the gloominess. What is it about a candle, or a flickering fire that is so comforting? I'm not going to ponder the psychology of it; I'll just enjoy it.

Comfort food, to go along with the candle, was on the menu last night. Butternut squash roasted with onion and rosemary - so good.

Is lighting candles on an ordinary evening something you do? Or do you save them for special occasions?

  1. Yes, I love to light my candles! It does add comfort to a room..... not sure why. But a fire causes us to gather round, doesn't it? It also stimulates conversation. Must go back to those long ago early days of life on earth!

  4. I have candles all over the house, but I seem to only light the couple of Yankee jar candles I have, for the scent.
I should light the others as well, candle light is warm comforting... especially this time of year.

  5. I light them whenever I can. I like it when we change our time as dinner then is after dark so there are candles or candle almost every evening.

  6. Oh yes, I love lighting candles on a gloomy day! They are so cozy and comforting. (Come to think of it, I light candles lots of other days too!)

Your butternut squash looks yummy. My farmer brother-in-law brought us a heap of them over the weekend. I think I'll try some your way.

  7. I very seldom light candles on a dark day, though I do have the harvest lights just now and soon the Christmas twinkle lights. I guess I use candles more for aroma than for cheer. I could change that, but then I'd spend more and frugal is my middle name.

  8. The butternut squash dish sound delicious, may have to give that a try,
I love to buy candles, especially scented ones, and often light one on dark evenings, I love the coziness they bring to a room.

  9. That sounds like the perfect rainy night! The butternut squash sound so yummy and easy enough for me. I only use candles for special occasions and when the power goes out! I love them though, I just never think about them. They're kind of expensive too. Thanks so much for your comments and input:) Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

  11. I'd light candles any time... but alas... hubby is very wary of them. So I don't use candles much now. But I do plug in the fairy lights in my living room (they live year round on my fig tree) any time I feel a need for cozy.

Your butternut squash recipe sounds heavenly... it is therefore fortuitous that I should have purchased one yesterday when I was out. Guess what we'll have for supper tonight on this snowy day.
