A Good Day for an Ark

Dreich: a combination of dull, overcast, drizzly, cold, misty and miserable weather. According to the Urban Dictionary, at least four of these adjectives must apply for weather to be truly dreich.
I read the word in Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher. I knew what it meant from the context, but thought I'd look it up to see if the description would fit yesterday's weather. Yes, it would. It was a truly dreich day. But there was beauty in it as well.

I stopped along the road today, protected my camera with my scarf and took a few photos. The snow geese are what drew me. Those white blobs are up-ended geese on the pond/lake. I had to use the full zoom on my camera to get them, hence the indistinct quality.

When I got home and looked at the photo, the colours jumped out at me - the lingering red on the trees, the white barn, golden grasses and bright evergreens.

I spent the afternoon baking - a good way to chase away the day's "dreich-ness."

  1. That's a new word for me. I guess you'd want to be all warm and "cozy" inside on such days! I think the colors in pictures taken on gray days look good.

  2. And that white barn, sigh...oh I am such a barn girl.

I love the red branches, they are so vibrant against the gloomy skies.

  4. Hi Lorrie,

Your mosaics are marvelous!! The first thing I noticed was the contrast of the colors against the white barn, and I love the upended ducks in the water. :-D

I'm so excited that you mentioned "Winter Solstice," by Rosamund Pilcher. I just finished reading that a few weeks ago; I love this book and I re-read it every year around this time. It's such a good story.

Thanks so much for your comments on my post last week. I'm really sorry I'm just now visiting you, but this past week has been extra busy for me. I really enjoyed your post, and I'm glad to know what dreich means.

    Have a wonderful week!

  6. As always, your photos are beautiful. Yes, there is beauty to behold, even on gray (dreich) days. I am sure that there is a spiritual application in that thought...
Seeing ducks and geese upending always brings a smile to my face!

  7. Those geese are so funny! I had to look very closely and still wasn't sure if they weren't some sort of poles. Beautiful photography and intriguing colors and textures. We had a somewhat similar day...not with color, but with drippy weather only it was colder and freezing rain.

You say dreich, I say dreary! But that is the perfect weather to do what you did - baking! It makes the house feel so cozy, to light up the oven, get your hands in the flour while looking out the window at the drizzly rain and cloudy skies.

  13. The first thing I noticed in the photo was the purple trees. So pretty against the backdrop of green. I'm glad you pointed out what the white things were. Too funny!
I just started reading Winter Solstice for the third time last night. Such a great read for this time of year. Don't recall seeing the word dreich in past readings, but I'll be on the lookout this time.
