Small Summery Treats

"One of the secrets of a happy life is continuous small treats."
Iris Murdoch

These are busy days. The end of school approaches and I am called in to teach more frequently. You would think the opposite; but no, I've been working more in June than I did in April. Classes end this week, so the end is in sight.

The garden burgeons with life. Beautiful flowers, like the peonies seen above. Weeds grow, too and need yanking. Vegetables like their weekly dose of fish fertilizer.In the house, cooking takes a little more thought and planning as Casey and his wife are staying with us while he recuperates from his accident.

When I find myself feeling overwhelmed by daily tasks, Iris Murdoch's words come to mind, and I make it a point to find the small treats in each day. Here's a short list of my summer treats. I'd love it if you added yours in the comments sections. What little things bring you happiness?

* a walk around my garden - smelling the roses, admiring the herbs, encouraging the vegetables to grow
* a cuddle with one of my darling granddaughters
* an evening walk with my husband
* savoring a square of dark chocolate
* arranging flowers in a vase
* reading a chapter in a good book
* a glass of cold water with lemon and mint
* going to the ocean and feeling the sand between my toes

  1. Like you, one of those special moments is to wander in the garden, having an encouraging chat to my new plants.
    Bringing in a vase of flowers all of which I have grown, gives me such pleasure.

  2. I like your list of summer treats. I would add walks on warm days or evenings to the list. With camera in hand of course. June is flying by and summer is coming. Enjoy!

  8. I've never used the word burgeon, what a pretty word. I would add to your list of small treats:
    ::enjoying new words:: ha!
    ::picking up a pretty rock from the lane::
    ::catching interesting shadows::

  9. I'm still enjoying springtime treats, Lorrie, which is easy to do as the weather has been cooler than usual at this time of year. A few delights: picking peonies from my garden, walking the nearby path and breathing in all the fresh air, a cup of coffee outdoors, so many things!

    Enjoy the remainder of the school year.

  11. It seems strange you are still in school, but I guess it's down here way south that we close so early, only to open on the early side as well.

    I think my list would be very similar to yours. And yours is a good one!

  12. I like your quote Lorrie. I need to remember the blessings (treats) we have available to us EVERY day! Your list was a very good one...I would add a drive in the mountains, a trip to the lake or river -- and last, but not least, mochi ice cream (that was the treat I gave myself today).
    Blessings,
    Aimee

  14. What a great list, I loved reading through that... I love walking around my gardens, too! A finished sewing project is high on my list, too, as well as quiet moments of cuddling with the kids. So much to appreciate, I could make a rather long list :)

Traditions Old and New

  Oh the rain. It drums down on the skylight. There are great puddles on the streets and sheets of water spray when cars drive through them....
