Postcard #2: Impressions

Long red fields slope to the sea. Sand dunes. Red sandstone cliffs stand vulnerable to the sea which eats away a foot of the Island's perimeter each year.

White churches of every sort point tall steeples to the sky. Clouds white against blue, or, grey and heavy with rain.

Trlmly kept houses cluster in half dozens and call themselves villages with names like Primrose, Culloden, Miscouche, and O'Leary, each one evoking memories of ancestors who traveled the sea to settle here.

Lobster traps piled high lean against weathered fishing huts along a wharf. When we say our goodbyes to the fisherman we've been chatting with, I mention that we'll be eating lobster for dinner and perhaps it will be one of his.

He hoists his plastic bin of bait and grins, exposing a missing tooth or two. "If it is," he says with an eastern lilt, "it'll be tasty."

And it was. A traditional lobster supper with friends last night and a lobster roll for lunch today. Tasty indeed.

  1. Oh my - lobster rolls bring back memories! Glad you are having a great time and hope it continues and the weather is good. We were there years ago and some day I hope to return - when it's not foggy, and I can see more - haha!

    Happy vacation - Mary x

  8. Looks delicious. I haven't had one yet this year but I'm sure we will very soon. I live in Massachusetts where lobsters are as fresh as it gets. Our neighbor is a lobsterman and we order them through him. Yum!

  10. Lobster is a can't-miss treat from the East!! My state of Maryland is better known for crabs, but I'd never turn down a lobster dinner OR a lobster roll!

  12. D'you know, I've never tasted lobster, but I know I'd like it : )
We are famous for crabs on our East coast ~ Cromer crabs, named after the town. Pretty tasty too, but let someone else prepare them! (so fiddly). Have fun!

  13. For months now - literally - I have been craving a lobster roll. That photo just about killed me. I guess I could feasibly make one of my own but it would cost about 30 Euro to do it!

  15. What a treat; though for you, it may be standard fare. Here, lobster can only be found in the change eaterys and very pricey. I would imagine yours much better tasting, too.

  16. Love the people, beaches and DELICIOUS Seafood of PEI.
Remember writing in the sand there "I love Canada from sea to sea " with tears in my eyes.
