Water: A Personal Photo Challenge

rushing waters of the Robson River below Mount Robson which runs to the Fraser River and the Pacific Ocean

Donna, at A Personal Photo Challenge, is a wonderful photographer (whose photos can be seen at her personal blog Cottage Days and Journeys.) Once a month, she offers a challenge to photographers or want-to-be photographers like me to hone our skills. She puts up links and suggestions for great photos.

This month the challenge was water. I wish I had read the links before I went on my trip to the Rockies. I know some things I would have done differently.

All of these photos were taken with my Nikon Coolpix, without a tripod. For editing, I added in a tiny bit of shadow to highlight the contrasts which are hard to capture on sunny days.

I crouched low to take this photo, trying to capture the expanse of calm water below the glacier.

The roar of this stream filled our ears as we hiked along the trail to the Plain of Six Glaciers above Lake Louise. I can only imagine what it must be like during the spring melt.

I'm always amazed at the different looks water offers. From ocean to mountain streams to glacier fed lakes water takes on so many characteristics.

  1. I wanted to park myself at the raging mountain stream for a while, and then I saw your amazing photo of Lake Agnes! Gosh, I think I would plop down and rest a good long while there. Doesn't such beauty make your heart sing? And blue tones off of Vancouver are mesmerizing too! Great job on the challenge.

And you're right. With the water reflecting the sky and its surroundings, it can take on so many different effects!

  2. How amazing! I love the rushing water! It's so hard to get photos of fast flowing water without it being out of focus! Great photos my friend!

  3. Quite nice! I think my favorite is the ocean one - a scene that doesn't exist here in the Allegheny Mountains.

  4. Fabulous photos, I like all the reflections in Lake Agnes and the sparkles on the ocean. Too bad we can't catch those sparkling water diamonds and put them in a jar for dull and dreary days.

  5. These are beautiful photos Lorrie. Lake Agnes is so pretty and clear with the mountain in the background. We really enjoyed seeing a lot of glacial rivers and lakes while in BC. Pam

  6. Such different looks! You captured them beautifully . . . from the clear . . . to the rushing . . . to the sparkles!

  7. The second and fourth really make me want to gaze longer. In fact, I'm going back to do just that. I love seeing what you do knowing that we have the same kind of camera. It really is all about the photographer's eye. You have an amazing one!

  22. I also love the sound of the water against the rock. Haven't been anywhere like that lately. I looked for some archives but didn't have anything but the peaceful lake I posted. Have a great week.

  23. Love the Lake Agnes shot - and your post earlier when you visited there.
Any image of, or around, Vancouver Island will always be beautiful, but you nailed this one, looks like a perfect and peaceful Summer day on the water.
