A Bit of Stitching

The sewing urge has been quite dominant lately. It's a good thing. My daughter-in-law's birthday is later this week, but we celebrated this past weekend. I stitched up two pillow covers using fabrics that will go in her living room. A simple Granny Square block with diagonal machine quilting came together without any glitches.

We also celebrated my daughter's birthday which was the previous weekend. I don't make clothes for my kids much any more, but last spring I stitched up this Vogue 8689 pattern and it turned out a wee bit too small so I gave it to my youngest daughter. Then I thought it would nicely fit her elder sister, so this time I made it in a cozy flannel. It does fit her, and oddly, it fits me, too, although I don't think I've lost any inches. Next I'll make it for myself, allowing for a little more room where needed.

This afternoon I worked in the garden, digging some manure into the garden beds where it can rot over the winter. I planted a few more tulips, some Siberian iris and Allium bulbs.

The winner of the Gladys Taber book is Deanna of Creekside Cottage.  Congratulations, Deanna. I'll contact you via email for your address.

  7. So great you can make clothes. I have made a few things, but am not real adept at it. The blouse is really pretty!

  9. Congrats to your book winner! Lucky gal.

Your pillows are lovely in the serene colors of yellow and gray....very nicely done! And it's fun to see your blouse too, as a gal who used to sew her own clothes. Recently I bought some fabric for a few tops and you've inspired me to get sewing!

  10. What lovely pillow covers Lorrie - your choice of colors so pretty.
Is that floral fabric actually flannel? If so it's really gorgeous, well actually great in whatever fabric of course. A blouse/shirt is not the easiest garment to make - you did a fabulous job though and I know the girls must love wearing your creations.

    Happy stitching.
    Hugs - Mary

  13. I love those pillows! Such soft colours. And the blouse is so pretty. I always love a nice blouse/shirt but I'm 'in between sizes' right now. LOL I saw a few in a store the other day and am wondering if they're making a comeback. Lovely work!

  14. At one period in my life, I made all of my clothes. I haven't sewn anything to wear in years - just pillows, napkins, quilts. You inspire me to sew something for myself.

    Love the pillows.

  17. These are the days to sew. I am putting away the dollhouse building stuff to clear a place for the sewing machine and the surger. I have thought about making pillows for the grandchildren. I like your quilted ones. And, I do like your blue header. Love the shade of blue. No garden work it; it is snowing and very cold: 1 degree F. Staying in all day. Happy stitching.

  18. Love your projects - it is always nice to find something the "fits" - whether in a room or on a person. We have a good frost here today - I guess I should get some tulips and daffodils planted soon. And sunshine - aren't we the lucky ones?

  20. The pillows look so nice…such a nice way to dress up or change things a bit in a living space. And the shirt looks great--comfy. I bet in flannel it would be very cozy and warm for your rainy winter days.

  21. I love the pillows and the shirt is very cute. I don't try to sew for myself anymore...nothing ever fits right! lol I have to always try clothes on! Congrats to your lucky winner, too! Hugs!

  23. Love seeing your sewing projects. I just don't like to sew anymore. Note sure why that happened, as I sewed for so many years and even made a 25 year career out of the knowledge of sewing. Maybe that is why, when I retired sewing was mostly set aside. Love your pillows

  25. All this and you have time to sew clothes, and those cute pillows?

That's a very cosy, and warm looking shirt, and I bet it will be well appreciated.

No bulbs here, ground is now too frozen to do anything. -12 already...sigh.

  29. Gorgeous cushion covers for your daughter-in-law Lorrie.
Modern fabrics and the grey spotted one ties them together beautifully!
I'm always amazed at what you accomplish each week. I've slowed down so much in the last few tears - it takes me longer to get things done now and it frustrates me!!
    Enjoy your weekend.
