From My Herb Garden: Rosemary




Rosemary is one of my favorite herbs. I have three plants, of two types, and it grows all year round in our climate. I clip it to add to flower arrangements and for a bit of green on my windowsill in the winter. I love the pine-infused fragrance and taste, and enjoy just brushing by it in my garden. I find the tall spikes and needles attractive, too, and the bees love the tiny purple rosemary flowers in the early summer.


Rosemary Parmesan Coins is something I've made for years, but can't recall from where the recipe came. I like to keep a couple of rolls of dough in the freezer which can be easily baked up. I tend to eat these like chips and they never last long. 
 

Rosemary's assertive flavor goes well with meat and poultry. This week I made a Grilled Rosemary Steak that was easy and delicious. Our weather improved this week and the sunshine we've enjoyed most of the summer returned, making a meal outside seem like a very good thing.

In other news around here I've been dealing with a glut of green beans, now slowing, and the start of ripe tomato season. Making salsa is on today's agenda, along with hemming some curtains. Anything interesting going on in your corner?

  1. I have a large rosemary bush and can't resist pinching the leaves whenever I pass. I also like the pendant plant, but it ha a tendency to die off more quickly than the robust bush variety. With lamb it is lovely!

  3. Rosemary grows well here too. I had to rip out my plant last year because it had become too big for the spot it was in. I have a new plant now in a pot which I plan to move around as it grows.
    Your photo of the Rosemary Parmesan Coins looks like it belongs in a cookbook or magazine. It also sounds delicious. I like the idea of freezing them. I think this sounds like a great idea to make ahead and have on hand for the holidays.

  4. Rosemary overwinters here only in the house. You should see my sorry little plant. I've had it for about five years now and I think I'm ready for an upgrade. Ha! I love the smell of it and the flavor and just made a pot roast earlier this week where rosemary figured in. The Parmesan Coins look yummy. I'll have to check out your recipe box. Not a lot going on here. I made pancakes with cherry sauce and scrambled eggs for supper. That was the most excitement of the day.

  5. Thanks for sharing your love of rosemary. I have it in the garden, but rarely pay attention to it. Today I have a glut of tomatoes, so trying tomato jam for the first time.

  6. I love rosemary...but sadly it doesn't grow here all year round, lol...must be the below belowwww zero temps we get.

  8. Thanks for the recipe for the rosemary parmesan coins...I am going to try them soon. I also like the flavour of rosemary and I sometimes tuck sprigs into a chicken for roasting, along with sage.

  10. I love it as well -- and the fragrance of it melding with the wild rose blooms in the spring, and the salty air of the seashore . . . It's great snipped up into my favourite olive oil-lemon-cornmeal cake!

  11. I love rosemary too and always keep a couple of pots right on our porch. That parmesan recipe sounds good! I always have projects that I can do. Now I just need to find up the get up and go to do them, LOL.

    In my world - I have bread rising - smells so yeasty and wheaty and good. Weather has cooled a little (as you know already) but still pleasant. I plan to order prints today of our grandsons for Don's office - that's my day - pleasant and simple.

    Thanks for the link to the Rosemary Parms thingys. I've got a HUGE plant of it that I wintered over in the sunroom last year & it has grown even larger over the summer. I was running out of ideas of how to use it.

    My mouth is watering just looking at your pictures!
