An Island Walk

The best thing about having a boat, as far as I'm concerned, is not the boat itself, but the ability to explore new places, especially places not accessible by road or ferry. We went to Sidney Island on Sunday afternoon. There is a small ferry that shuttles passengers back and forth from our big island, but we went on our own boat.

There's a park and a nature preserve as well as a lot of old bricks for in the early 20th century Sidney Island produced thousands of red bricks. The shadows lengthened as we walked the trails yet plenty of heat was to be had in the sunny spots.

An old piling stands in the water, rotting from the inside. Perhaps a bird dropped a seed here and it took root - an invasive Himalayan blackberry, but pretty in this spot where the thorns won't tear.

Water, soft and smooth as silk. Sidney Island has a narrow spit of sandy beach at the north end of the island that stretches low and long, and is covered by water at high tide.

Golden grasses wave in clumps on the sand. Here the view is to the east, to islands of Canada and the USA and to the mainland beyond. A hint of Mount Baker is visible in the right third of the photo.

The first three photos are straight out of the camera, capturing the saturated evening light. I had fun in PicMonkey with the last photo, playing a little and adding a bit of text.

I've not been on the computer much the last few days and the next couple of weeks will be limited as well. Those golden grasses tell me that summer is peaking and will soon wind down (Noooooo, she says) and I mean to enjoy all the sunshine I can.

Are you a summer person, or is there another season you prefer?

  1. Lovely photos!
Funny, I'm not good at all with prolonged heat, yet I love the ease of summer, the slower pace, the visitors (especially young ones) that require one to live in the moment. It might be different if I didn't live at the beach with marine breezes to cool me down, but for now, summer rates very high with me.

  2. Beautiful - I think even I, who have a fear of water, might be drawn to have a boat with places like that to sail! I always hate the fact that the evenings begin to get shorter before we really get into summer properly and I want it all to stop just where it is just for a while so I can really appreciate it all but maybe the fact that summer is so ephemeral is what makes us love it so and if it were to go on for months and months maybe we'd get tired of it.

  3. So true, that is one of the best things about having a boat - exploring! Since I live in the hot and humid South, I am not a fan of summer. Give me spring and fall, and skip winter and summer.

  4. Such pretty pictures of the sights to be found on your travels. I especially like the one with a bit of Canada and the USA.
Will that wild blackberry vine produce edible blackberries?
I do love summer, but I don't enjoy the high heat and humidity here in the south. It keeps me inside more than I like. I am becoming a bigger fan of autumn when things cool off a bit and the beautiful color change begins.

Beautiful pictures. I can't blame you for soaking in all the summer sun you can. Enjoy your time away from the computer.

My favorite season is fall but of course, I live in the south!

  6. A whole different perspective from spending time on the water and getting to the water...
We so enjoyed just watching the canal boats meander down the Thames....so quiet and relaxing.

  10. It would be fun to explore places only accessible by boat and this area looks nice.
I like all four seasons but my favourite to experience is autumn with the changing of the leaves.

  11. Lovely shots and that last capture with Mount Baker in the background is breathtaking! Enjoy the lazy, hazy days of Summer; they are winding down mores the pity. Summer and Fall my favourite seasons of the year!

  13. I agree Lorrie I'm not mad about boats (my husband is) but I love that it takes us to places only accessible by boat.

Your photos are wonderful and the Historian and I are looking forward to enjoying many such times as you are both enjoying now.

The water is calm as a millpond which doesn't happen often here, except early morning and late afternoon - it's my favourite time!

  18. You are choosing wisely! Enjoy the days of summer to the fullest. I am an autumn girl, then spring, then summer, but this summer has been more like a pleasant autumn with very few hot days. Have fun exploring! Will catch you when I can!

  19. Such beautiful pictures! No wonder you're enjoying these excursions!

Summer is actually my least favorite season, living in a place where heat and humidity walk hand-in-hand. However, we've had some lovely weather so far this summer, so I have been able to enjoy it. So thankful!

  20. It's time to soak up, and wallow in happiness, sun, and fresh air. Breath in deeply, absorb, and just be.

    Enjoy your beautiful boat rides.

  23. Beautiful shots, Lorrie. I've never been to the spit but have always wished to have a walk there - thank you!
I'm not one for the heat, and am finding it a bit of a trial. The watering, just to keep Pondside looking good, is quite a chore. A little rain (between Monday and Thursday) would be appreciated!

  24. How wonderful that you can get to the island on your own, whenever you desire! Lovely photos, Lorrie. It seems like these marine surroundings are, indeed, serene.

  25. It would be great to have a boat for trips like yours but my husband gets sea sick. Thanks for sharing your boat trip! Happy August to you, Lorrie.

  26. I think the 'exploring' would be my favorite part of having a boat as well! And yes, I am a summer person...much preferring the warmth to the cold.

  27. How beautiful and peaceful. It looks like you are truly enjoying the summer.

  28. Yes it's hard to believe summer is coming to a close. The shops tell you that. At least I haven't seen a sign of Christmas yet. Your last photo is stunning--you did a great edit on that!

  31. I certainly agree. Remember cycling in Switzerland and using the ferries across the lake and being able to see so much more than staying on land. Lovely place for you to live and have a boat.
