October Daily 5: Morning Fog

On October mornings I am eager to get outside to walk. Yesterday, mist hung over the bog and drifted among the trees and bushes. I had my sleeves pulled down over my hands to keep them warm in the chilly air.

My friend pointed out a cluster of house sparrows perched right along side the path. They hardly moved when we stopped to take photos, and continued to face the light and chatter.

Here at home I've been engaged in various pursuits. Yesterday I tutored a student in Spanish, made several phone calls (oh, how frustrating to try and engage with a technical service), and made two new potholders. My old ones are looking quite bedraggled. A bit of print linen for the top (I have an apron in the same fabric), a layer of flannel and one of batting, plus a cotton back. I like the look of channel quilting and it all didn't take very long.

Canadian Thanksgiving is this weekend and I'm making some early preparations. Yesterday was cranberry sauce. They are fresh in the stores just now. I made five jars, plus a bit. It's good to have on hand to eat with chicken any time of the year. Do you enjoy cranberry sauce? Cranberry bushes are native to North America, but I think, like many other things, they've been introduced in other places.

  1. Your pot holders turned out so pretty. I would be afraid to use them.
We love cranberries and, like you, enjoy the sauce with chicken. I'll have to check the grocery stores to see if they are stocked here yet. I can hardly believe you are getting ready for Thanksgiving. It seems like summer just ended.

  2. I love the sound of fresh cranberry sauce. I don’t think I’ve ever made it. Beautiful pot holders and spectacular misty shot. It’s rare that we have early morning mist in Jersey as our temperatures rarely plummet low enough. B x

  6. Cranberry sauce fan here, especially homemade. In winter, I add it to sandwiches and mashed potatoes.

  7. Nice potholders. It doesn't take too long for potholders to get tattered. Happiest of Thanksgivings to you and your family. Yes, I like cranberries and cranberry sauce.

  8. Enjoy your Thanksgiving preparations! Does your family enjoy turkey at Thanksgiving? Nice pot holders. It seems no one misses the cranberry sauce on our table. I've made my own in the past but stopped when no one really added it on their plate. It's good on a focaccia turkey sandwich with melted havarti cheese...yum.

  10. i like your new potholders, I should make some new ones too. We also have some cold mornings in October but I like to wear Autumn clothes. We have cranberries from Canada I only use them for Xmas to eat with turkey or goose , for the fresh ones and use dried ones for baking.

  11. As an introduced species House Sparrows are much maligned, but I am very fond of them, and as you have experienced they brighten up a cool morning walk.

  12. Ground fog hung over the grass at the park this morning and I agree, it's lovely to walk and see it.
Your new pot holders are so pretty.
I had a few bags of cranberries in the freezer and will be making cranberry sauce just as soon as I buy an orange ( we like an entire orange which has been put in the small food processor included).
