The Enjoyment of Light

With the flick of switch light is available in most homes around the world. We take it for granted, not realizing how precious light is. Can you imagine, in the not so distant past, how darkness pervaded homes, villages, and cities? Unless one makes an effort to get away from artificial light sources, we don't really know what true darkness is.

Yet we crave light. On our wet coast November and December are the dark months. When the sun does shine, I stand in admiration. Light not only makes things visible, it makes them beautiful. Without light I would be unable to see the faces of my children, my husband, my grandchild.

During this Advent season, I pause to enjoy the light. To drink a cup of tea while sitting in the rays of light slanting in through the window.

And I pause to light a candle. And to remember that the Christ Child came to be the Light of of the World.

  1. Amen and AMEN! I stopped by for A Pause in Advent and was so blessed by what a sweet golden thread of light He is weaving this Advent season, as that was one of the highlights He reminded me of this past week as well at SandwichINK - with music last Sunday and the encouraging Bible verses on Wednesday. Don't you love it when you see Him weaving us altogether like this. :) Have a blessed and beautiful week.

  4. Hi Lorrie!
I know those coastal Novembers and Decembers. I grew up in Washington State. I think that's why when my husband is traveling, I turn on ALL the lights. I like light and I need the LIGHT of the world.

  5. So true - about the light we crave here on the coast, and the Real Light Of the World.
When I look around, from my desk, I see six candles - there's nothing like the light from a candle on a dark December morning.

  7. The arrangment with the candles in terracotta pots and surrounded with mosses or green growing somethings is so very lovely. You will enjoy having those candles burning. I am supposed to be off today looking for Advent candles, which to point have been elusive. Light becomes so important and precious to us the more fleeting it becomes.

  8. I like that we both have candles in pots this year! I shall think of you when we light ours next Sunday... I love eating at the table with candles once the flowers have gone from the garden. For me, candles are for winter what flowers are for the rest of the year.

  11. Your words often bring perspective into my thoughts. I too was thinking of light today when I posted. I so enjoy the light of day and the sunshine through my windows. My sister has just had two cataract surgeries so I'm grateful that she can see so well again. Have a good week as you prepare for Christmas, Lorrie.

  12. It only takes one small candle to light up a completely darkened room. We do take light for granted. We should perhaps stop to be thankful.

  13. One appreciates the light so much more in the dark days, both literally and metaphorically.
