October Daily 31:

The last day of October. We went from hot summer to chilly autumn weather, from drought to several days of steady rain. A lot happens in one month. On this rain-washed morning everything looked clean and fresh for several hours after the dripping stopped. How glorious the colour on the maple trees.

I spent a good part of the day indoors, having tea with my youngest daughter and Cora. Ashley left and Cora and I played together, ate lunch, and then she went down for her nap. It was a good day for making date loaves, one for the freezer and one to eat now. I've grown to love dates more than I used to as a young woman.

Halloween tonight. It's not a favourite day of mine. I find a lot of the decor tacky and don't enjoy the focus on death. Rather, I enjoy seeing the little ones dressed in their costumes and have fun with them when they knock on the door and holler "trick or treat". We had thirty-three this evening. Now, I hear lots of firecrackers going off.

Tomorrow begins another month. And it's my daughter Cristal's birthday. She was born in a small mission hospital on the edge of the Amazon rainforest. (All three of our children were born there.) She is coming for a walk and tea in the morning, and I'm looking forward to a good chat.

Thank you for coming along with me on this month of daily blogging. I so much appreciate your comments, and have hopefully visited your blogs in return. Happy November days ahead!

  1. I’ve loved reading your blogtober posts. Your life must have been so different living on the edge of the Amazon. Hope your daughter has a good birthday. B x

  6. What would autumn be without maple trees? Happy Birthday to your daughter! I didn't realize that all your children were born there--was it Ecuador? Lorrie, what a gift it is that you and your daughter will meet in the morning for a visit, both of you nearly sharing birthdays. Our one daughter lives too far away for that but she is soon moving from the southern end of Florida to the northern part, which makes her feel closer. Well done to your Blogtober posts!

  8. Such happy times when family is around. Due to each of us taking turns being sick I saw my daughter and son-in-law yesterday for the first time in 5 weeks. We often see each other a couple times a week so this was hard. Have a great week and enjoy that wonderful bread. It looks so good.

  9. Happy Birthday Cristal ! 🎂

Dates stuffed with cream cheese was a tradition for my mother on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Date loaf sounds more appealing.

  11. Happy birthday to Cristal - hope that you both enjoyed your walk together. Not keen on Halloween either. The nurse at our doctor's surgery took a sample of my blood yesterday - that was sufficient Halloween gore for me.
Like Salty Pumpkin Studio - my mother too did dates for a special treat, but she stuffed them with finely grated cheddar cheese.

  14. Figs and dates were pretty exotic when I was young and we only had them if someone gave my grandmother a gift. Figs I liked right away, dates so much, and that is true to this day.

i left home before the rains and cooler temperatures arrived, but your blog posts of the past week make me feel like I haven’t missed out at all. You gave me the typical rainy October experience this year! Good job on posting daily. Happy birthday to your daughter.

  16. Congratulations on blogging faithfully through October. And, a very happy birthday to your daughter ( a little belated). Date loaves are always a hit with my DH, not so much with the grown children. I made a Tomato Soup/date cake this week to send along for Gleaners. I wonder how many still make that unusual cake.

  18. My mom made date and nut loaves when i was younger...I have her recipe box and so I should try my hand at making some. Halloween is not my favourite either...but the displays here on Pender are truly lovely. A community effort and very creative...set on the edge of Home Farm Walk with goblins, skeletons, ghosts and farm tractors which add so much fun to the season and all walkers can enjoy the sights.

  19. I enjoy this peek into your life, tea with daughters, grandchild staying and napping. It just hit me that my grandchildren are all past napping at Mimi's and I wasn't aware of when it was the last time!
