Apples come into their own in autumn. Some varieties ripen early, others later. They are so versatile; suitable for desserts, but also add a bit of sweetness to savory dishes as well. I like many varieties of apples, but they have to be crunchy, not mealy. Our own apple trees gave a bumper crop last year, but few this year. However, there are plenty of apples available at markets and from friends. Here are five (plus a half) things I like to do with apples.
1. Photograph them. Red apples in a green tree against a bright blue sky are the prettiest things. The ones above are growing wild in a park.
1.5 Eat them raw. I like them cut into wedges when I'm at home where a knife is handy, but while out and about, if an apple tree (not on private property) makes itself known, I'll happily pick one, rub it on my shirt, and take bites all around the core.
2. Bavarian Apple Torte: Cream cheese, almonds, a buttery crust, and apples make a wonderful dessert. I've found that Granny Smith or Transparent apples work best in this recipe; others tend to stay a bit crunchy, and for this dessert, fully softened is best. My cousin first served this recipe to me, and it's now in one of our family compilations. Always a winner.
5. Peanut Caramel Dip: For a snack, or if you are bringing something to a party, this dip is always a hit. What's not to like about caramel and peanut butter? Rather than unwrap dozens of those little caramels, I came up with a "from scratch" sauce that takes no more time.
This post is a reprise of one from 2016. I still make the same recipes each year and love apples.
Dearest Lorrie,
ReplyDeleteYou certainly live in the apple and cherry region so you might as well enjoy eating them and cherish different recipes for using over and over.
Looks and sounds very inviting and no doubt delicious!
Hugs,
Mariette
Thank you, Mariette. I love using seasonal produce.
DeleteI’ve never seen an apple tree in real life (living in Malaysia!), so I can only imagine how beautiful they look against a blue sky. Your Bavarian Apple Torte and apple crisp with crème anglaise sound absolutely delicious! 😋 I love how versatile apples are—now I’m tempted to try that peanut caramel dip too.
ReplyDeleteApple trees are very pretty in the spring when they blossom and when the fruit is brightly coloured against all the foliage.
DeleteMy one apple tree has not done as well this year, but there were enough windfalls to prepare and put in the freezer. I too make a box of crumble mis ready for making an apple crumble...so delicious!
ReplyDeleteOurs didn't do well this year, but friends have had lots and shared generously.
DeleteDelicious apples! So many lovely October posts, Lorrie. I am looking, but not keeping up with comments. Your photography is always absolutely stunning. Happy Halloween!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Patricia.
DeleteSuch a versatile fruit. Love how you use them!
ReplyDeleteApples are indeed versatile!
DeleteApple season is wonderful, isn't it? Love your photos, all of them. And that torte and dip look especially fabulous. I'm like you -- I always keep extra crumble topping in the freezer so I can whip up something fast. It's such an easy way to make a dessert -- and tasty too!
ReplyDeleteApples are a staple for winter eating - and keeping crumble mix in the freezer is such a time-saving idea.
DeleteI like your list of things to do with apples! Marking the Bavarian Apple Torte to make this week!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Cheryl. Apples can be used in so many ways. The Bavarian Torte is easy and delicious!
DeleteWorthy of reprise! Beautiful and delicious use of apples!
ReplyDeleteMe too -- I love apple season (although honestly, I have apples in my frig at all times no matter where we are. They are just even more perfect right now) Keeping some "crisp" in the freezer is a great idea -- thank you for that.
ReplyDeleteI’m an apple lover too. Our apple tree only had four apples this year after a bumper crop last year. Fingers crossed for a better crop next year.
ReplyDeleteEverything apple is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteApple crisp with vanilla bean ice cream is my favorite apple use.
Your apple crisp with a high proportion of crunchy topping and served with creme anglaise would be a top favourite. I like your idea of freezing extra topping and then having the easy ability to slice a couple of apples, add the topping, and bake. Yum! I'm going to copy you.
